UPM, Ingredion and Paramelt advance starch-based barrier for recyclable paper packaging.

UPM, Ingredion and Paramelt advance starch-based barrier for recyclable paper packaging. Key takeaways. * UPM, Ingredion, and Paramelt have developed a paper packaging prototype using plant-based starch barriers and bio-based heat-seal coatings. * The structure passed Part 1 of Western Michigan University's recyclability test while targeting grease resistance for food packaging applications. * The partners say cross-value-chain collaboration could accelerate renewable, fiber-based packaging with improved barrier performance. (Image credit: UPM). UPM Specialty Materials, Ingredion, and Paramelt have launched a prototype paper packaging structure with a starch-based film that has passed Part 1 of Western Michigan University's (US) recyclability test. The innovation follows a partnership that aimed to investigate how plant-based starch barrier technologies can support the development of recyclable paper-based food packaging that maintains grease-proof properties. The collaboration combines UPM's Solide Lucent 78 gsm and UPM Asendo 65 gsm papers with Ingredion's starch-based barrier technology and Paramelt's bio-based heat-seal and barrier coatings. "Expanding the range of paper-based packaging options available to converters and brand owners requires innovation across the value chain," says Sarah Dembroski, sales director, Packaging Papers Americas, UPM Specialty Materials. "This collaboration with Ingredion and Paramelt demonstrates how complementary technologies can help broaden the possibilities of paper-based packaging for food applications in the Americas and globally." The solution is on display at UPM's booth at Pack Expo International (Oct 18-21), in Chicago. Innovating in paper packaging. The innovation taps into demand for recyclable solutions. UPM explains that starch-based technologies offer "new opportunities" for paper-based innovation, particularly for grease barrier properties. Anand Sundararaman, project leader for Sustainable Packaging Coating Applications at Ingredion, says: "By combining our plant-based starch barrier coatings with UPM's substrates and Paramelt's heat-seal coatings, we have demonstrated a paper-based packaging solution that supports the transition to more sustainable food packaging." "This collaboration highlights how complementary technologies can help accelerate the adoption of renewable, fiber-based packaging solutions." Previously, Packaging Insights spoke to Ria Tinga, strategic marketing manager at Avebe, about how bio-based barrier offerings respond to consumer sustainability and PFAS-free demands. "For food packaging paper, oil and grease resistance, runnability, food-contact compliance, and cost-in-use remain essential," she outlined. Harnessing value chain collaboration. Paramelt's R+D director, Neill Dutton, highlights the power of value chain collaboration in advancing packaging innovation. "We believe the future of packaging lies in combining renewable materials with high-performance functionality. By bringing our expertise together, we have created a compelling solution that helps brand owners meet both performance and sustainability objectives." At Interpack 2026, UPM combined its barrier and barrier base papers with BASF's Joncryl high-performance barrier technology resins to facilitate a shift away from conventional mixed packaging structures. "The transition to recyclable fiber-based packaging requires both advanced barrier performance and close collaboration across the value chain," said Mika Uusikartano, senior manager of Product Portfolio Management at UPM. Recently, Innomost, a Finland-based biomaterials company, developed a birch tree bark-derived barrier for food packaging, dried goods, and non-food packaging applications. Meanwhile, Amcor partnered with UK-based bio-based barrier coating start-up Kelpi to evaluate the viability of its seaweed material.

(UPM, Helsinki, October 20, 2026 at 14:00 EEST) - UPM, Ingredion, a global ingredient solutions company, and Paramelt, a global producer of functional coatings have joined forces to investigate how plant-based starch barrier technologies can support the development of recyclable paper-based food packaging. Starch-based technologies offer new opportunities for paper packaging innovation, especially for grease barriers. The joint development work brings together complementary technologies from across the value chain to better understand how paper-based packaging structures can be designed for demanding food applications. The structures are based on UPM Solide(TM) Lucent 78 gsm and UPM Asendo(TM) 65 gsm papers. "Expanding the range of paper-based packaging options available to converters and brand owners requires innovation across the value chain. This collaboration with Ingredion and Paramelt demonstrates how complementary technologies can help broaden the possibilities of paper-based packaging for food applications in the Americas and globally," says Sarah Dembroski, Sales Director, Packaging Papers Americas, UPM Specialty Materials. Ingredion's contribution focuses on starch-based barrier technology, which shows promising potential for enhancing grease resistance in paper packaging applications. "By combining Ingredion's plant-based starch barrier coatings with UPM's Specialty Materials substrates and Paramelt's heat-seal coatings, we have demonstrated a paper-based packaging solution that supports the transition to more sustainable food packaging. This collaboration highlights how complementary technologies can help accelerate the adoption of renewable, fiber-based packaging solutions," says Anand Sundararaman, Project Leader, Sustainable Packaging Coating Applications, Ingredion The collaboration also leverages Paramelt's expertise in bio-based heat-seal and barrier coatings, helping evaluate how different technologies can work together in paper-based packaging structures. "At Paramelt, we believe the future of packaging lies in combining renewable materials with high-performance functionality. By bringing our expertise in bio-based heat-seal and barrier coatings together with UPM's advanced paper substrates and Ingredion's starch-based technologies, we have created a compelling solution that helps brand owners meet both performance and sustainability objectives," said Neill Dutton, Research & Innovation Director, Paramelt. The collaboration has resulted in a co-created paper-based packaging structure, based on UPM Solide(TM) Lucent 78 gsm, that has passed Part 1 recyclability testing at Western Michigan University. Samples developed through the collaboration will be on display at the UPM Specialty Materials PACK EXPO Booth W-46118, October 18-21, in Chicago. Ingredion, National Fuel Gas and Hershey: defensive dividend picks amid US debt fears

Simply Wall St has picked three defensive dividend stocks for income investors, after investor Ray Dalio warned of a potential US debt "death spiral." The screen's full list includes 34 more large US dividend payers. Ingredion (INGR), a supplier of starches and sweeteners, has a market cap of $6.1 billion. Its largest segment is Texture & Healthful Solutions, at about $2.5 billion in revenue. National Fuel Gas (NFG), a natural gas utility and pipeline operator, has a market cap of $7.5 billion. Nearly $30 million of added expansion revenue is due to begin in fiscal 2027. Hershey has a market cap of $33.0 billion and earns about $9.8 billion from North America Confectionery. A 2025 cocoa shock cut its GAAP earnings per share by roughly 60%, largely through non-cash hedge losses.

Ingredion's T&HS segment posts 9th consecutive quarter of volume growth with $568M sales

Ingredion's Texture & Healthful Solutions segment posted 5% net sales growth to $627 million in Q2 2026, marking its ninth consecutive quarter of volume expansion. The business saw 7% volume growth driven by demand for clean-label ingredients, texture solutions, and sugar reduction products across EMEA and APAC markets. Segment operating income rose 5% to $117 million, the second-highest quarterly result in T&HS history, despite higher tapioca costs. Operating margin improved slightly to 18.7% from 18.5% year-over-year. For 2026, the company expects T&HS net sales to increase mid-single digits, with operating income rising mid-to-high single digits. However, tapioca costs and unfavourable price mix could constrain margin expansion. Ingredion's growth reflects broader industry momentum in solutions-led businesses, with competitors like IFF and ADM also reporting strong performance in flavours, speciality ingredients, and nutrition segments.
