Siemens and Voltus partner to help commercial building operators generate virtual power plant revenue.

Siemens and Voltus partner to help commercial building operators generate virtual power plant revenue. Published 2nd October, 2026 by John Hatcher Siemens and Voltus have teamed up to integrate Voltus's energy monetization capabilities with Siemens's building-side intelligent controls and services. This new offering provides a pre-tested comprehensive energy management solution that can help U.S. commercial building operators save energy costs and earn new revenue by limiting peak demand, optimizing energy use patterns and participating in utility and market demand response programs. Siemens's Peak Demand Limiting (PDL) service, a key component of the Siemens Energy Load Optimization (ELO) portfolio, helps companies reduce increasingly high peak demand charges. Integrating this Siemens service with Voltus's solution now allows PDL customers to also enroll in virtual power plant (VPP) programs that pay them for automatically reducing electricity use in response to utility and grid signals. The cloud-based integration was designed specifically for large energy-using buildings in industries that may have highly complex equipment and operations such as commercial real estate, higher education, and state and local governments. "Through our partnership with Voltus, our customers can now have a holistic PDL solution that enables both utility demand charge reduction and participation in demand response programs while protecting occupant comfort and indoor conditions," said David LaTour, U.S. head of sustainability portfolio, Siemens Smart Infrastructure USA. "Additionally, this low-cost, automated load management approach can help improve energy management, automate response to grid events, and provide visibility into building performance." "Large loads, electrification and aging infrastructure are putting enormous strain on the grid, and that's creating an opening for commercial buildings to be part of the solution," said Marissa Galizia, senior director of partnerships at Voltus. "Our integration lets buildings deliver more reduction during an event, and do it more reliably, which means more value for customers and the grid for every megawatt enrolled."

Siemens and OMV deploy new high-power charging system on the Brenner corridor.

Siemens and OMV deploy new high-power charging system on the Brenner corridor. Siemens and OMV are deploying the first SICHARGE FLEX high-power charging system at a new site in Kufstein, Austria, along the Brenner corridor. Designed for electric trucks, buses and cars, the modular platform can deliver up to 1.68 MW and dynamically distribute power between multiple charging points. 1 October 2026 By Editorial staff Siemens and OMV are taking their collaboration on high-power charging to the next stage with the deployment of SICHARGE FLEX at Kufstein, Austria, along the A12 motorway connecting Germany and Italy. The location is particularly relevant for heavy-duty transport, as the A12 forms part of the Brenner corridor, one of Europe's major north-south freight routes. The charging hub is designed to serve electric trucks and buses alongside passenger cars, bringing different vehicle categories together within the same high-power infrastructure. More importantly, Kufstein represents the first deployment of Siemens' SICHARGE FLEX system, which was unveiled in 2025 with OMV already confirmed as its first customer. Up to 1.68 MW with dynamic power distribution. Rather than using individual chargers with fixed power outputs, SICHARGE FLEX is based on a centralised, modular architecture capable of delivering between 480 kW and 1.68 MW DC. Power can be dynamically allocated between charging points according to the vehicles connected and their requirements, in increments of 80 or 120 kW. A single system can support up to four MCS charging points, while the MCS dispenser can provide up to 1,500 amps. The platform supports both CCS and Megawatt Charging System standards. Another feature is the separation between the power cabinet and the dispensers. The latter can be installed up to 300 metres from the central unit, giving operators greater freedom when designing sites for large vehicles and allowing the charging hardware to be adapted to different layouts. Six charging points first, ten at a later stage. The Kufstein site already hosts an OMV conventional filling station and will initially feature six charging points. The plan is to expand this to ten once the local distribution system operator completes the necessary grid reinforcement. This scalability is particularly relevant for truck charging hubs, where installing the maximum possible capacity from day one may not always be compatible with existing grid connections or initial demand. For Siemens, SICHARGE FLEX is aimed not only at public charging hubs but also at truck and bus depots, where dynamic power allocation can help distribute the available capacity between several vehicles according to operational requirements. The company plans to commercialise the system during 2026.

Digital twins to assess ammonia risks.

Digital twins to assess ammonia risks. 6 hours ago ABS, HD KSOE and Siemens are developing digital twin technology to assess ammonia vessel leak safety ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Siemens have teamed up on digital twin technology designed to assess the safety of ammonia-fuelled vessels. Announced at Gastech 2026, the agreement will combine computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with digital twin technology to predict how ammonia could disperse following a leak. The partners said the capability could allow a broader range of leakage and accident scenarios to be assessed during the early stages of vessel design. "By pairing CFD analysis with digital twin technology, this project gives designers a faster, more rigorous way to understand leak behaviour," said Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer. Under the collaboration, HD KSOE will develop ammonia safety systems and lead related experimental research, while Siemens will provide simulation analysis and digital twin technology. ABS will contribute a safety assessment methodology built around digital twins. The initiative comes as shipbuilders, owners and regulators examine alternative marine fuels as the industry seeks to reduce emissions. Ammonia is being considered as a potential fuel for future vessels, but its toxic properties mean that managing leaks and understanding dispersion behaviour are important elements of vessel safety. Chang Kwangpil, head of the Future Technology Institute at HD KSOE, said the project reflected a broader transformation in shipbuilding. "The AI transformation of the shipbuilding industry is not simply about applying new technologies; it is a process of innovating the way we work," he said. "We expect the integration of AI and digital twin technologies to accelerate further in the R&D field as well." Siemens said physics-based simulation could complement digital twin technology in validating vessel designs. "Physics-based simulation and advanced digital twin technologies are key to ensuring the safety and engineering reliability of next-generation vessels," said Byung Joon Oh, country manager of Siemens Digital Industries Software Korea. The companies said their collaboration would support faster safety validation for ammonia-fuelled vessels and wider digital innovation across the marine industry.
