About the Job

Requirements

  • Be a current or former committer to the PostgreSQL open-source project.
  • Have a demonstrated, sustained record of contributing features to PostgreSQL that have been well received upstream.
  • Have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a related field and 10 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Have a high level of proficiency in C and, where relevant, C++ or Rust.
  • Have advanced understanding of data structures and algorithms in storage and indexing.
  • Have deep knowledge of PostgreSQL internals.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership and the ability to set technical direction across teams.
  • Have contribution-level knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including areas such as the query planner and executor, storage and access methods, write-ahead logging and recovery, replication, multi-version concurrency control and concurrency, or the extension and application programming interface surface.
  • Understand operating-system principles, including process scheduling, memory management, disk and network input/output, and server-class hardware such as storage devices, controllers, and network interfaces.
  • Understand distributed, high-throughput systems, including replication, failure detection, load balancing, request pipelining, and consistency, isolation, and availability trade-offs.
  • Have experience with profiling, benchmarking, advanced testing methodologies, and debugging tools for diagnosing development and production issues.
  • Communicate effectively, partner closely with Database Engineering and site reliability engineering teams, focus on internal customers, and explain complex technical material clearly and concisely to organizational leaders.
  • Work effectively with colleagues based in other locations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an established technical authority and thought leader for PostgreSQL internals and features, anticipating and framing systemic challenges, shaping technical direction across multiple teams, and ensuring a high-quality bar across database functionality and operations.
  • Advise engineering leaders and stakeholders to align technical execution with business priorities, and serve as a key resource whose judgment shapes critical PostgreSQL-domain decisions.
  • Mentor and develop the next generation of Apple's PostgreSQL contributors, lead design and code reviews, cultivate deep internals expertise across the team, and help attract, develop, and retain database engineering talent.
  • Understand Apple's relational database requirements and shape them into proposals that strengthen PostgreSQL; drive consensus through community discussions and review; collaborate with upstream committers to refine and land improvements upstream.
  • Represent Apple in PostgreSQL community mailing-list design and review discussions and at major conferences and events, and grow Apple's standing in the community.
  • Establish technical direction and standards for PostgreSQL internals across query execution, storage, replication, high availability, scaling, and administration; anticipate systemic challenges and frame approaches to resolve them; ensure consistent, high-quality engineering across teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Have a Master of Science or PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with at least 8 years of relevant experience for an MS or at least 5 years for a PhD.
  • Have authored major PostgreSQL features or maintained a significant database subsystem over time.
  • Have a history of speaking at PostgreSQL developer conferences and mentoring other contributors.
  • Have knowledge of Linux kernel development and performance optimization.
