Requirements
  • Les Mills TONE certification is required.
  • Twenty-five hours of practical experience as a fitness class instructor, or equivalent six-week instructor training course and shadowing experience, is required.
  • The ability to respond to safety and emergency situations is required.
  • The ability to set up, move, and store class equipment is required.
  • A high school education or equivalent is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and instruct wellness, fitness, and related classes following Association standards and guidelines.
  • Observe and discuss individual progress with participants.
  • Develop positive relationships with participants and facilitate relationships among participants and members.
  • Provide motivational support and guidance.
  • Increase participant awareness of healthy lifestyle factors.
  • Encourage involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Set up and take down class equipment and report equipment problems.
  • Attend required staff meetings and approved trainings.
  • Ensure safe and effective workouts and respond to and report accidents and incidents.
  • Accurately maintain related records.
  • Adhere to abuse prevention policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, and comply with mandated reporting requirements.
  • Ensure staff are properly screened, trained, supervised, and held accountable to the organization’s abuse risk management standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current state-approved first aid certification is preferred.
  • Current state-approved CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations is preferred.
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
  • YMCA Healthy Lifestyles Principles, Foundations of YMCA Group Exercise, or previous YMCA or outside certification is preferred.
  • Listen First Level I and II training is preferred.
