What believers are saying

  • Beyoncé’s September 4, 2026 $2 million gift validates the brand and attracts more donors.
  • Ford Foundation’s June 2025 $10 million grant endows Golden’s role through March 2026.
  • Post-reopening programming and extended hours broaden attendance, memberships, and earned revenue immediately.

What critics are saying

  • Seven-year redevelopment showed vulnerability to delays, including pandemic disruption and Adjaye allegations.
  • The museum’s annual budget must grow beyond $11 million to sustain expanded operations.
  • If donor momentum fades after 2026 gifts, the enlarged campus strains finances and staffing.

What makes Studio Museum in Harlem unique

  • Founded in 1968, it centers artists of African descent and Black cultural narratives.
  • November 15, 2025 reopening delivered a bespoke 125th Street home for its programs.
  • Thelma Golden’s curatorial leadership and Artist-in-Residence program create a rare institutional flywheel.
