Unreal Engine 5.8 adds Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery support, potentially addressing one of UE5's biggest PC gaming problems: shader compilation stutter.

Unreal Engine 5.8 adds Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery support, potentially addressing one of UE5's biggest PC gaming problems: shader compilation stutter. Epic Games has officially documented Microsoft's DirectX 12 Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) integration for Unreal Engine 5.8, marking an important step toward addressing one of the most persistent problems affecting modern PC games: Pipeline State Object (PSO)/shader compilation stutter. According to Epic Games' newly published documentation, Unreal Engine 5.8 now includes a dedicated ASD Tool that allows developers to generate a State Object Database (SODB) directly from a cooked (i.e., a game build whose assets have been converted and optimized for the target platform) Windows Direct3D12 game build. This database can then be submitted to supported game storefronts, where its shaders are precompiled for specific GPU architectures and drivers before being downloaded alongside the game. For those unfamiliar with the technology, Advanced Shader Delivery essentially moves shader compilation away from the player's PC, allowing supported games to launch faster and significantly reducing the likelihood of encountering shader compilation stutter during gameplay. Wccf Tech Inc has previously reported on Microsoft's Advanced Shader Delivery implementation for Unreal Engine 5, which was spotted in development back in April 2026. Originally introduced alongside the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds in 2025, the technology has since expanded considerably, with Microsoft recently confirming broader availability across Windows 11 PCs equipped with supported NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm GPUs. This development is particularly important for Unreal Engine 5 games, which have become somewhat notorious for shader compilation stutter on PC. Modern UE5 titles can feature an enormous number of shader and PSO permutations, resulting from different materials, rendering techniques, graphics settings, and other combinations of rendering states. The sheer number of possible permutations makes it extremely difficult for developers to discover, collect, and precompile every required PSO before gameplay. Consequently, some PSOs inevitably end up being compiled on demand as players encounter new effects or environments, potentially causing noticeable spikes in frame time and stuttering even on otherwise powerful hardware. Microsoft itself has acknowledged this challenge, explaining that certain games contain so many PSO combinations that fully enumerating and compiling them becomes impractical. Its Partial Graphics Programs technology is intended to alleviate this problem further by allowing common shader components to be compiled once and reused across multiple graphics pipelines. Epic's implementation makes the process more straightforward for UE5 developers. The new ASD Tool can gather all compute shaders from cooked shader archives, alongside graphics and compute PSOs from bundled pipeline caches, before generating the SODB required for Advanced Shader Delivery. The resulting data can then be compiled into hardware-specific Precompiled Shader Databases (PSDBs) and distributed through supporting storefronts. There are, however, some important limitations. Advanced Shader Delivery does not replace Unreal Engine 5's existing PSO precaching mechanisms, and Epic explicitly recommends keeping them enabled. Graphics PSOs must still be collected through pipeline caches, meaning that any missing permutations may require conventional runtime compilation. Ray tracing PSOs are also currently unsupported, while older GPU drivers and unsupported hardware may not benefit from the technology. Nevertheless, this is a potentially significant development for PC gaming. With Advanced Shader Delivery already supported through the Microsoft Store and Xbox PC App, and Microsoft confirming that the technology is coming to Steam and Epic Games Store, the infrastructure for widespread adoption is steadily taking shape. Epic's documentation specifically targets early 2027 for Epic Games Store support. Hopefully, broader integration into Unreal Engine 5, combined with support across Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and eventually other PC game launchers, will finally help bring shader compilation stutter under control. Given just how frequently the problem has plagued Unreal Engine 5 releases, any technology that can substantially reduce it would represent a major quality-of-life improvement for PC gamers. Leaks suggest Fortnite Sprites won't return for Chapter 8.

Leaks suggest Fortnite Sprites won't return for Chapter 8. The countdown to the start of Chapter 8 in Fortnite has begun, with it now being less than six weeks until the big switch, and leaks suggest that Sprites won't be returning. Epic Games introduced a new system with Sprites in Chapter 7, adding a new collectable element to Fortnite, with each Sprite having specific effects and a variety of rarities to collect. While this has proven to be a popular aspect of play in the community, leaks suggest that the system won't return next Chapter. Before going any further, consider downloading the free Insider Gaming app for the cleanest way to read your gaming news on iOS and Android. Fortnite allegedly scrapping Sprites for Chapter 8. Fortnite leaker Blortzen posted on X that while the extraction and Sprite features look set to remain for the mini-season bringing an end to Chapter 7, which kicks off November 1, the Sprite system will be scrapped when Chapter 8 kicks off in December. It's explained that "almost all extraction files," including the core functions, are set to leave when Chapter 8 releases, suggesting the feature won't be brought back. However, the same files are present for next month's mini-season, and while this isn't confirmed and is based on the in-game files, it's a big indication of what could lie ahead. Epic Games has not been afraid to significantly mix things up in the past, and shelving the Sprite season in the new Chapter gives players the opportunity to focus attention elsewhere. It also doesn't mean that Sprites will be gone permanently, as they could be reintroduced again to Fortnite later down the line, either with the same collectable season or with an entirely new approach.
