About the job

Requirements
  • A Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a closely related field.
  • At least five years of experience designing electronics hardware for Functional Safety–certified products.
  • Experience working under IEC 61508, ISO 13849, or ISO 26262.
  • Experience delivering PCB-level hardware certified to SIL 2 or SIL 3, or equivalent PL d/e or ASIL B–D.
  • A background in analog, power, and/or mixed-signal circuit design.
  • Hands-on experience implementing safety architectures in schematics rather than only block diagrams.
  • Ability to perform FMEDA and SIL metrics calculations on your own designs.
  • Understanding of failure-rate data sources and component derating for reliability.
  • Ability to debug fault-tolerant hardware.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with firmware, mechanical, and systems teams.
Responsibilities
  • Design fault-tolerant circuits for safety-critical subsystems and select appropriate safety architectures, such as 1oo2 or 1oo2D, based on the required SIL target.
  • Implement hardware diagnostic and monitoring mechanisms to detect dangerous failures.
  • Design circuits that enforce a defined safe state when a fault is detected.
  • Apply Common-Cause Failure mitigation techniques at the component and PCB level.
  • Perform FMEDA on schematics by identifying component failure modes and calculating Safe Failure Fraction (SFF) and Diagnostic Coverage (DC).
  • Build Reliability Block Diagrams and compute SIL metrics to verify that designs meet their target.
  • Select and derate components based on failure-rate data, mission profiles, and expected lifetime.
  • Advise system architects on hardware safety constraints and review PCB layouts for safety compliance.
  • Collaborate with electronics, firmware, and systems engineering teams to integrate safety functions into the robot design.
  • Create and maintain Functional Safety documentation for hardware modules.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with safety-rated integrated circuits, such as safe supply supervisors, safety microcontrollers, and smart drivers with diagnostic feedback.
  • Contributed to or authored a Safety Manual for a hardware module.
  • Familiarity with Proven-in-Use argumentation for off-the-shelf components.
  • PCB layout skills relevant to safety, including creepage and clearance and redundant-channel routing.
  • Experience with circuit simulation using SPICE to verify fault-response behavior.
  • Experience in robotics, automotive, aerospace, or medical-device sectors.
  • A PhD degree in a relevant engineering discipline.

About the company

RIVR develops multimodal robots for last-mile delivery and urban logistics. Its main product is a wheeled-legged robot that combines wheel efficiency with leg mobility to carry tools, materials, goods, and sensors across urban distances with energy efficiency. Revenue comes from selling or leasing these robots and providing maintenance and support; the company differentiates itself with a hybrid wheeled-legged platform that outperforms traditional wheels and lightweight drones and integrates well with urban environments. Its goal is to improve the efficiency and reliability of urban last-mile delivery while reducing energy use and human labor.

What believers are saying

  • Amazon’s March 2026 acquisition gives RIVR immediate distribution, capital, and operational access.
  • CNBC reported Amazon plans field tests for doorstep delivery with RIVR robots.
  • RIVR raised $22 million in 2024 from Bezos Expeditions and Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund.

What critics are saying

  • Amazon now controls RIVR; independent strategy and upside vanish after integration.
  • RIVR’s pilots with Veho and Evri face deployment risk before scale economics prove out.
  • Competitors like Boston Dynamics and Gatik already sell logistics robots with deeper operating experience.

What makes RIVR unique

  • ETH Zurich spinout RIVR combines wheels, legs, and package manipulation in one platform.
  • Amazon acquired RIVR on March 19, 2026, validating its doorstep-delivery robotics stack.
  • RIVR’s General Physical AI targets last-mile navigation, not narrow warehouse automation.
