Requirements
  • A Master's Degree is required.
  • National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform complete histories and physicals and document them in the medical record.
  • Order and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information, and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Serve as the first responder for nursing and house staff in patient status changes, orders, and situations requiring procedural and resuscitative interventions.
  • Assess risks associated with caring for acute and complex chronically ill patients, including medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team to diagnose acute and complex chronic conditions.
  • Manage diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision.
  • Formulate prioritized differential diagnoses.
  • Diagnose complications and order appropriate interventions.
  • Identify expected outcomes from diagnoses and formulate and document plans of care for complex acute and chronic health care needs.
  • Use evidence-based practice guidelines and protocols in individualized, dynamic plans of care across the continuum.
  • Implement and modify plans of care.
  • Prescribe diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions.
  • Perform advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation when applicable.
  • Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Document or dictate patient progress through daily progress notes, transfer and discharge summaries, clinic notes where applicable, and other required medical-record documentation.
  • Ensure documentation is timely, meets acute-care compliance standards, and captures patient acuity.
  • Precept, mentor, educate, and instruct graduate students.
  • Engage in research and analysis of evidence-based practice.
  • Participate in Advanced Practice Grand Rounds and specialty-specific meetings.
  • Maintain continuing education units and membership in a professional organization.
