PetSmart to close California store as pet chains cut brick-and-mortar locations.

PetSmart to close California store as pet chains cut brick-and-mortar locations. October 18, 2026 PetSmart is shutting another California store in November, joining Petco and Petsense in a wider pullback as online rivals take a bigger bite of pet retail sales. The chain plans to close its Folsom location at Broadstone Plaza I, 2705 E. Bidwell St., on Nov. 22, TheStreet reported. A second Folsom store about a mile away, at 2375 Iron Point Road, will stay open. PetSmart did not give a specific reason for the Broadstone exit. A company representative pointed customers to the nearby Iron Point store and to delivery options instead. "We remain committed to serving pet parents throughout the area, who will continue to have access to our nearby Folsom-Iron Point store, located about 1 mile away, as well as online shopping with convenient delivery options," the representative said. The Iron Point site also offers dog day care, veterinary care, and training. The Folsom move comes four months after PetSmart closed its last shop in San Francisco. That exit fit a larger pattern: big pet retailers are trimming physical stores while shoppers lean harder on Chewy, Amazon, and same-day delivery. Bay Area shoppers already shifted online. PetSmart framed the San Francisco closure as an adaptation to how customers buy. In a statement cited through SFGate reporting and carried in the same account, the company tied the decision to changing habits across the Bay Area. "As more customers choose online ordering, autoship, and same-day delivery, we're continuing to adapt how we serve pet parents across the Bay Area," PetSmart said. It told San Francisco customers they could still use nearby stores, including Daly City, plus online ordering with delivery. "We remain committed to serving pet parents throughout San Francisco, who will continue to have access to nearby PetSmart locations, including our Daly City store, as well as online shopping with convenient delivery options," the company added. PetSmart still runs more than 1,660 stores across North America even after these cuts. Petco and Petsense are cutting deeper. PetSmart is not alone. Petco closed a net of 25 locations in 2024 and more than two dozen additional stores in 2025 as part of a restructuring and transformation push. The chain still counts more than 1,500 stores in the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Tractor Supply Company's Petsense brand went further. In July 2026, on its second-quarter earnings call, the company said it would close 75 of its 208 locations that had "negative four-wall cash flow", stores that were losing money at the location level before corporate overhead. That is a blunt standard. If a store cannot cover its own rent, labor, and inventory costs, it does not stay open on goodwill. Petsense put the unprofitable four-wall math on the record and moved to shut those doors. Online rivals keep pressure on the aisles. TheStreet's account placed the Folsom closure inside a simple competitive squeeze. Chewy and Amazon keep drawing pet food, litter, toys, and autoship orders away from traditional aisles. Brick-and-mortar chains still sell services that do not ship easily, grooming, vet visits, training, day care, but routine consumables move online with less friction. PetSmart's own Bay Area language conceded that point. Customers chose ordering, autoship, and same-day delivery. The company answered by shrinking its footprint and steering people to surviving nearby stores and the website. No government order forced these exits. No agency seized the leases. Shoppers changed habits, cash flow followed, and management closed rooms that no longer paid their way. PetSmart left the Folsom Broadstone reason vague; Petsense did not. Negative four-wall cash flow is a balance-sheet verdict, not a press-release slogan. For local customers in Folsom, the practical result is short. One plaza loses a pet store on Nov. 22. Another PetSmart a mile away remains, with extra services attached. San Francisco already lost its last PetSmart shop in July and was pointed toward Daly City and delivery. Across the sector, Petco's multi-year store cuts and Petsense's 75-location plan show the same math at chain scale. Retail space is not a public utility. When pet owners click "buy again" more often than they drive to the strip center, chains either earn the trip with service and convenience or they lock the door, and the latest round of PetSmart, Petco, and Petsense closures shows which way the ledger is tilting.

Pet store chain closures grow, as PetSmart shutters locations.

Pet store chain closures grow, as PetSmart shutters locations. The pet store brick-and-mortar sector, led by PetSmart, Petco, and Petsense, has faced fierce competition from online retailers, such as Chewy and Amazon, which have cut into retail sales and led to dozens of store closures. Petco closed a net of 25 locations in 2024 and over two dozen more stores in 2025 as part of a restructuring and transformation of its chain, which has over 1,500 stores in the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Tractor Supply Company's Petsense pet store chain in July 2026 said that it would close 75 of its 208 locations that had "negative four-wall cash flow," according to its second quarter earnings call statement. PetSmart will close a location in Folsom, Calif., in November 2026 four months after closing a store in San Francisco. PetSmart closes store in November. And now giant pet store chain PetSmart, with over 1,660 stores in North America, has joined the downsizing trend on a smaller scale, as it plans to close a Sacramento area location in November after shuttering its last San Francisco shop in July. PetSmart will close its Folsom, Calif., store at the Broadstone Plaza I retail center at 2705 E. Bidwell St. on Nov. 22. The chain's other Folsom location at 2375 Iron Point Road will remain open, according to the Sacramento Bee. The company did not give a specific reason for closing the Folsom store. Retailer has a nearby store. The Broadstone location sells food, bedding, and accessories for pets, as well as grooming and adoption services. The Iron Point store offers those services and more, including dog day care, veterinary care, and training. "We remain committed to serving pet parents throughout the area, who will continue to have access to our nearby Folsom-Iron Point store, located about 1 mile away, as well as online shopping with convenient delivery options," a PetSmart representative said. The San Francisco PetSmart store closed because of a number of factors, the company said in an email to SFGate. Company adapts to e-commerce growth. "As more customers choose online ordering, autoship, and same-day delivery, we're continuing to adapt how we serve pet parents across the Bay Area," PetSmart said. However, PetSmart encouraged its customers to shop online for its products, which could open the door to customers seeking better deals from competitors. Promotes online shopping. "We remain committed to serving pet parents throughout San Francisco, who will continue to have access to nearby PetSmart locations, including our Daly City store, as well as online shopping with convenient delivery options," PetSmart said. "We are expanding fulfillment capabilities at our Daly City location to help meet the needs of the community," the company said in the message. The San Francisco store offered a variety of services, in addition to its retail products, including dog and cat boarding, doggie day camp, and grooming. "Consumers are still spending on their animals, but online retailers like Chewy are changing where those dollars go," said bankruptcy and restructuring attorney Jonathan Shenson of Greenberg Glusker LLP. "Routine purchases like food and litter no longer necessarily require a trip to the store. Traditional retailers like PetSmart are losing not just the recurring purchases, but also the opportunity to sell other products during that visit," Shenson said in an email to TheStreet. PetSmart is headquartered in Phoenix, where it opened its first two stores in 1987, according to its website. The privately owned company, which employs over 50,000 workers, was sold to private equity firm BC Partners for $8.7 billion in 2015.

The national chain's store in the Broadstone Plaza I Retail Center at 2705 East Bidwell St. will close Nov. 22. The company did not explain the reason for the closure. The store sells PetSmart's typical pet supply offerings - including food, bedding and accessories for animals - and offers grooming and adoption services. That store offers additional services, including dog day care, veterinary care and training, along with grooming and adoption services.
