Nashville riders can now order a Waymo straight from Lyft.

Nashville riders can now order a Waymo straight from Lyft. Posted: Sep 9, 2026 / 08:06 AM CDT Updated: Sep 9, 2026 / 08:32 AM CDT NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - If you order a Lyft in downtown Nashville today, the driver's seat might be empty when the car pulls up. On Wednesday, Nashville became the first city where users requesting rides within the Lyft app could be matched with a self-driving Waymo taxi. Lyft's move to further integrate with Waymo marks a significant shift in how autonomous vehicles are deployed at scale. By combining traditional drivers and robotaxis into one unified fleet, Lyft is effectively testing whether everyday passengers will be willing to accept autonomous rides as a standard default. Passengers who prefer a human driver can choose to reject autonomous vehicle assignments or to opt out of driverless rides altogether, according to Lyft's announcement. Previously, autonomous car rides could only be ordered through the Waymo app. To be eligible for matching with a robotaxi, the route must start and end within the Waymo service area on Lyft covering Downtown/Broadway, North Nashville/Germantown, East Nashville, Midtown, and South Nashville. Availability will continue to grow gradually over the coming weeks. "Nashville riders have been quick to embrace autonomous vehicles as part of how they get around the city. Adding Waymo vehicles to our marketplace is a natural fit," said Sid Patil, Head of Rideshare at Lyft. "Lyft and Waymo are joining hands to bring this amazing piece of technology to more riders in a seamless way." Riders can always decline an autonomous ride or opt out of them entirely. Human drivers will continue to serve riders throughout and around the service area, creating a hybrid network of human-driven and autonomously driven vehicles. Lyft began hiring for 70+ new full-time jobs for its autonomous vehicle fleet management in Nashville. At the time, officials said half of the filled roles had gone to current or former Lyft drivers. "Nashville is a hub for travelers, event goers, and visitors, and our drivers here deliver a level of hospitality and service I'm incredibly proud of," said Yuko Yamazaki, Head of Driver at Lyft. "Demand in this city keeps climbing, and I believe we're strongest in serving more riders when autonomous vehicles and human drivers grow side by side." When autonomous vehicles first hit the roads in January, one long-time Nashville driver told News 2 that she didn't expect them to last long. "Once people have started to see where there's glitches and problems with it, they'll lose faith in it. And then back are the (ride share) drivers," said Monique McClain. Other rideshare drivers have expressed concerns about robotaxis affecting their income or posing a safety to pedestrians and riders.
