Apple's Chennai iPhone factory boosts India's electronics ambition amid US-China tech tensions

Apple's iPhone production success in Chennai is advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of making India an electronics manufacturing hub. The city hosts Apple's first major iPhone factory in the country. Washington's efforts to distance its tech sector from Chinese software and components are strengthening India's position as a less costly and more reliable alternative to China. Bloomberg noted the Chennai facility provides "physical proof" India can achieve this ambition. Microsoft opened its largest Indian data centre in Hyderabad on Thursday, attracted by over 1 billion internet users and strong tech talent, Reuters reported. India is also pursuing semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

Apple's $82B buyback retires less stock as price climbs, memory costs hit margins

Apple spent $82.2 billion buying back its own stock over the past twelve months, but the rising share price means each dollar retires less stock than before. The company's share count fell 1.7% in the past year, down from an average 2.3% annually over three years, as buybacks become less effective with Apple's $4.5 trillion market valuation. The buyback remains fully funded by strong cash flow. Apple generates approximately $146.7 billion in operating cash flow annually from its installed base of over 2.5 billion devices and 1.5 billion paid subscriptions, covering 1.4 times its total shareholder payouts. However, memory pricing pressures are affecting margins. Gross margin is expected to decline from 48% to a guided 47% midpoint, which management attributes primarily to what it described as hundred-year flood conditions in memory pricing.

Apple pays Google $1B yearly for Gemini AI while rivals spend $700B building infrastructure

Apple reached a $5 trillion market cap before reporting fiscal third quarter results. Revenue grew 16% year-over-year to $109.4 billion, whilst earnings per share rose 29% to $2.02. iPhone revenue hit a June quarter record of $54.3 billion, up 22%. Shares fell 10% after the report as September quarter guidance of 9% to 11% growth missed Wall Street's 12% forecast. Apple is paying Google approximately $1 billion annually to run Gemini behind its rebuilt Siri, rather than building infrastructure itself. This contrasts with rivals Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, which plan over $700 billion in combined 2026 AI capital spending. Apple generated roughly $34 billion in operating cash flow in the June quarter. The company launched its Upgrade leasing programme with Klarna, offering iPhones from $17.99 monthly. Tim Cook hands over the CEO role to John Ternus on 1 September.

Apple's India sales surpass $10B for first time as retail expansion accelerates

Apple's India sales surpassed $10 billion for the first time in its last fiscal year, marking a significant milestone in the country. The achievement reflects growing demand for Apple's premium products in the Indian market. The company has been expanding its retail presence in India to capitalise on increasing consumer interest. Apple's success in India demonstrates the effectiveness of its strategy to strengthen its footprint in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing smartphone markets. The milestone comes as Apple continues to invest in its retail infrastructure across the country, positioning itself to capture more market share among Indian consumers seeking high-end devices.

Apple acquires Czech materials science firm PlasmaSolve for plasma simulation tech

Apple has agreed to acquire Czech materials science company PlasmaSolve, according to a notice published on the European Commission's website. Founded in 2016, PlasmaSolve develops plasma simulation software to design and optimise plasma-based manufacturing processes. The company's primary product, MatSight, is a suite of apps that helps manufacturers simulate vapor deposition processes for metals. Apple has used this technology for years on various iPhone models to create durable thin films on casings that minimise scratching and damage. Apple will acquire PlasmaSolve's entire issued share capital through a subsidiary and hire certain employees from the company.
