Requirements
  • An Associate’s Degree in a related field of Science is required for the MLT track, preferably from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology, or completion of Military Medical Laboratory Specialist Training.
  • Less than one year of prior training in a laboratory setting is required for the MLT track; student training is accepted.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of Science is required for the MLS track, preferably from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology, or completion of Military Medical Laboratory Specialist Training.
  • Less than one year of prior training in a laboratory setting is required for the MLS track; student training is accepted.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds and perform frequent to continuous standing and walking is required. Patient-care providers may need to kneel, bend, squat, and perform CPR.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and monitor medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate test results for confirming clinical diagnoses and treatment therapies.
  • Follow established procedures and protocols to meet regulatory requirements, maintain a safe laboratory environment, and meet accreditation standards.
  • Process specimens according to established protocols for patient identification and labeling; collect specimens through phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific hospital locations as needed.
  • Inspect specimens visually to determine acceptability, recognize abnormal or unusual quality-control results, document unacceptable specimens according to policy, communicate specimen requirements, and report, document, and communicate critical values to appropriate personnel according to hospital policy.
  • Complete reports and maintain records and documentation of test results by entering and verifying data in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Operate analytical equipment for medical laboratory tests; monitor, clean, calibrate, and maintain instruments according to manufacturer specifications and relevant standards; troubleshoot malfunctions, initiate corrective action, and maintain records of equipment checks and maintenance.
  • Follow quality-control policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and validity of laboratory results; recognize factors that affect measurements and take appropriate action; complete required quality-control checks before releasing results; document results in compliance with regulatory agencies; and participate in the proficiency testing program.
  • Maintain clinical competency by fulfilling annual regulatory requirements and participate in hospital and laboratory in-service education to meet accrediting agency regulations.
  • Perform other laboratory technician duties assigned by the lead, supervisor, or manager, including providing technical education and training to technicians and students when requested to meet the student's institution's criteria.
  • Interact with coworkers, visitors, and other staff in a manner consistent with the organization's values.
