Requirements
  • An associate’s degree in a related field of science is required for the MLT qualification; a bachelor’s degree in a related field of science is required for the MLS qualification. A degree from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology is preferred, or completion of military medical laboratory specialist training.
  • Less than one year of prior training in a laboratory setting is required; student training is accepted.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds, push or pull patients on beds or stretchers, and perform lateral transfers involving up to 50 pounds of patient weight.
  • Frequent to continuous standing and walking; patient transporters may walk 8–10 miles per shift.
  • Patient care providers may need to kneel, bend, squat, and perform CPR.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and monitor medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate results for confirming clinical diagnoses and treatment therapies.
  • Follow established procedures and protocols to meet regulatory requirements, maintain a safe laboratory environment, and meet accreditation standards.
  • Process specimens according to established protocols for patient identification and labeling; perform specimen collection through phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific hospital locations as needed.
  • Assess specimen acceptability through visual inspection and quality-control recognition of abnormal or unusual results; document unacceptable specimens according to policy.
  • Communicate specimen requirements to appropriate personnel and report, document, and communicate critical values according to hospital policy.
  • Enter and verify test-result data in the Laboratory Information System, and complete reports and maintain records and documentation.
  • Operate analytical equipment for medical laboratory tests; monitor, clean, calibrate, and maintain instruments according to manufacturer specifications and relevant standards; troubleshoot malfunctions and initiate corrective action.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment checks and maintenance actions.
  • Follow quality-control policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and validity of laboratory results; recognize factors affecting measurements and take appropriate action according to protocol.
  • Complete quality-control protocols before releasing test results, document quality-control results in compliance with regulatory agencies, and participate in the proficiency testing program.
  • Maintain clinical competency by fulfilling annual regulatory requirements and participating in hospital and laboratory in-services for education and accreditation compliance.
  • Perform other laboratory technician duties assigned by the lead, supervisor, or manager, including providing technical education and training to technicians and students when requested to meet the student’s institution criteria.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistently with Jefferson’s values.
