Requirements
  • A valid Montana Commercial Driver License, Class A, Type II, with no restrictions, a tank endorsement, and a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate are required for all levels.
  • Applicants with a learner’s permit must obtain the necessary Montana Commercial Driver License within 30 days.
  • Maintenance Technician I requires one year of experience driving a heavy truck or operating construction equipment.
  • Maintenance Technician II requires two years of documented experience with a city, county, or state highway road department performing road maintenance.
  • Maintenance Technician III requires three or more years of documented experience with a city, county, or state highway road department performing road maintenance.
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, remain focused and seated for extended periods, and perform moderate physical activity including lifting, carrying, and operating tools and equipment.
  • Must be available for emergency weather conditions and able to work weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must live or relocate within 45 road miles of the work section headquarters and have a telephone or be reasonably accessible to the section headquarters.
  • Must pass a practical test, behavioral-based interview, driver-record verification, and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Employees are subject to random drug testing under federal law.
Responsibilities
  • Perform winter road maintenance, including snow removal and snowplow operation.
  • Clean the road right of way.
  • Fix guardrails and repair fences, signs, and luminaires.
  • Perform traffic control.
  • Produce salt brine.
  • Work shifts ranging from four to eight hours, between 4:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., based on weather and section needs.
