New Balance SC Rebel v1 Review

New Balance SC Rebel v1 Review The SC Rebel v1 marks a genuinely new addition to New Balance's lineup rather than a simple update. It replaces the SC Trainer entirely, and it's worth being clear from the outset that this is not the same shoe as the standard Rebel, which is more of a faster-feeling daily trainer. The SC Rebel is a carbon infused-plated shoe with a bigger stack, built to handle everything from daily mileage to long runs to race day itself. The shoe releases at £180 and comes with New Balance's Infinion foam, an aliphatic TPU blend that's said to be the same compound used in the SC Elite v6, though it feels noticeably different underfoot in practice. The carbon-infused plate uses a PEBAX blend and is shaped into what New Balance calls an Energy Arc design, sitting low under the forefoot. Stack height comes in at 40mm in the heel down to 36mm, giving a 4mm drop, and there's a generous amount of foam packed under the forefoot alongside a pronounced rocker. The upper is a Fantomknit construction with supportive overlays, a gusseted tongue, and reasonable padding for comfort. A UK size 10 (US 10.5) weighs in at 228 grams, and the outsole carries strong rubber coverage throughout. One small gripe on the build is the lacing, which mirrors the SC Elite v6 and could benefit from a sawtooth design for a better lockdown. On the run, this is where the shoe earns its praise. The ride draws heavy comparisons to the SC Elite v4, a shoe held in extremely high regard, having been used across multiple marathons including London and the Yorkshire Marathon. The SC Rebel captures that same stable, forgiving character but pairs it with a noticeably more responsive foam. The plate itself isn't aggressive, and the shoe never feels wobbly or unstable, even as the pace picks up. What stands out most is how the shoe naturally pulls the pace faster; efforts aimed at easy running still tend to land around 8-minute miles rather than a true easy effort, and the shoe comes alive properly between 7 and 8-minute miles. It still holds up comfortably at the 8:30 mark for easier days, but its real strength is in tempo-adjacent efforts. Because of that blend of stability, comfort, and mileage-eating capability, this reads as a genuine do-it-all shoe. It's built to absorb serious training volume while still being credible enough to wear on race day itself, including deep into a marathon when legs are fading around the 22-mile mark. For a first-time marathoner or someone looking for a single shoe to handle both training blocks and the race itself, this fits that brief well. Against its main rivals, the SC Rebel comes out ahead of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5, particularly over longer efforts, thanks to a nicer, more responsive foam and rocker (though the incoming Speed 6, with its new foam, remains untested). It's also preferred over the Hoka Skyward X2, despite that being a strong shoe in its own right, largely down to personal preference for the foam and plate feel. Compared to the Nike Zoom Fly 6, the SC Rebel feels less firm and more versatile, even though the Nike remains good value at under £100. It has effectively taken over the rotation slot previously held by the Super Blast 3, though that's not a fair like-for-like comparison since the Super Blast is unplated and softer; the same applies to the Mega Blast, which is a different category of shoe entirely. The main caveat is price, and there's no getting around the fact that £180 is a serious investment. Sizing also needs attention, as it runs true to US sizing rather than UK, so those measuring off their UK size will end up with a shoe that's too short. Beyond that, and unlike some past SC Elite experiences, there have been no durability issues through testing so far. Overall, this lands as one of the strongest releases of the year for anyone who already gets on with New Balance's SC Elite line, particularly the v4. It combines a stable, forgiving ride with genuine pace-turning responsiveness, enough stack and cushioning to absorb high-volume training weeks, and enough race-day credibility to go the distance when it matters.

Statement craftsmanship: the New Balance 2040v5 redefines the Made in USA line.

Statement craftsmanship: the New Balance 2040v5 redefines the Made in USA line. 2026-08-17T14:15:16 When Teddy Santis took the helm as Creative Director for New Balance's Made in USA line, expectations were set exceptionally high. Now, the brand's latest reveal for this line leaps far past standard seasonal retros. The Drop Date is talking about the New Balance 2040v5! A new design that sets a breathtaking new benchmark for luxury performance. A closer look at the New Balance 2040v5 Made in USA... The New Balance 2040v5 balances high-performance architecture with artisanal material selection. Built on a foundation of breathable mesh, the silhouette features rich, layered overlays of high-grade pigskin suede and premium nubuck. Beneath the surface, a carbon fibre midfoot shank provides torsional rigidity, continuing the technical legacy of the original 2000-series chassis. The sole unit fuses proprietary ENCAP technology with responsive ABZORB cushioning to deliver the plush, supported ride long-time collectors expect. Meanwhile, subtle 3M reflective accents, a moulded tongue patch, and embroidered Made in USA detailing emphasise the model's hand-crafted heritage. To understand the weight of the 2040v5, one has to trace the lineage of New Balance's storied 2000 series. Historically, this line is reserved for the absolute peak of the brand's technological and material innovations. Therefore, the line has also never shied away from premium price tags. The original 2040 model debuted over a decade ago as an uncompromising showcase of American manufacturing, and the v5 iteration elevates that philosophy into ultra-premium territory. The debut drop introduces three distinct palettes designed to showcase the model's complex layering. The collection kicks off with Castlerock, which represents the quintessential New Balance heritage grey rich with tonal contrast. For a deeper aesthetic, Mood Indigo delivers a refined navy option tailored for modern street styling, while the stealthy Blacktop iteration offers a sleek monochrome look that highlights the shoe's sweeping lines. New Balance called the whole project their "most ambitious Made in USA product yet" themselves. How about the drop date? The New Balance Made in USA 2040v5 is scheduled to release through New Balance and a limited selection of stockists. The pair will first be available in North America. New Balance 991v2 gets a "Walnut/Shitake" Update.

New Balance 991v2 gets a "Walnut/Shitake" Update. The Made in England release pairs Walnut brown and Shitake grey-brown with suede leather and mesh. New Balance introduces the 991v2 "Walnut/Shitake," a new Made in England edition of the 99X series model scheduled to launch on August 20, 2026. The release uses a palette of Walnut brown and Shitake grey-brown to give the streamlined silhouette a seasonal update built around layered materials, tonal detailing and a cushioning system that combines several of the brand's established technologies. The upper brings together suede overlays, smooth leather panels and breathable mesh. New Balance distributes the two main shades throughout those materials, allowing the construction of the 991v2 to remain clearly visible even within a restrained color scheme. Walnut introduces the richer brown element, while Shitake adds a softer grey-brown tone. Suede covers key sections of the design and gives the shoe a textured finish. Smooth leather creates a cleaner surface on additional panels, while mesh introduces a lighter visual element and provides breathability. Discover more Sporting Goods Deep brown continues through the inner lining and rubber outsole, extending the palette beyond the upper. New Balance keeps the branding within the same tonal direction. The familiar "N" logos remain visible on the sides, while debossed "991v2" stamps identify the model without introducing a contrasting color treatment. The 991v2 retains the streamlined proportions associated with the 99X series while using its material combinations to define the individual sections of the shoe. The Walnut and Shitake treatment gives the model a distinctly earthy appearance, with brown shades carrying from the upper into the lining and outsole. Underfoot, the 991v2 uses full-length FuelCell foam with ABZORB pods and ENCAP support for cushioning and stability. The "Walnut/Shitake" edition places its strongest emphasis on color, texture and material variation. New Balance will release the Made in England 991v2 "Walnut/Shitake" on August 20, 2026.
