About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Meta buys AI analytics startup Sundial, founded by ex-staff, which raised $23M

Meta has acquired Sundial, an AI-powered data analytics platform, a company spokesperson confirmed to Axios. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sundial will not run as a standalone product. It will join Meta's new data analytics organisation, led by Alex Schultz. Sundial was co-founded in 2021 by Chandra Narayanan and Julie Zhuo, both former Meta executives. It builds self-service analytics tools that help businesses make decisions without routing every question through a data team. Its clients include OpenAI. The startup raised $23 million in total, including a $16 million Series A in July 2025 led by DJ Patil of GPV. Sequoia Capital also backed it.

Meta's tax rate fell to 2% on an $8B Treasury break; senators question data centre credits

Meta's effective tax rate was 2% for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, against a statutory rate of 21%. The company reported $53.5 billion in pretax income and a $1.03 billion tax provision. Most of the gap comes from Treasury Notice 2026-7, which gave relief from the corporate alternative minimum tax and produced an $8.03 billion first-quarter benefit. Without it, the provision would have been about $9.06 billion, roughly 17% of pretax income, according to a Fortune calculation. Meta expects a fourth-quarter rate of 15-17%. Seven Democratic senators have also asked Meta how it used the federal research credit. They say it classed AI data centres as experimental "pilot models" and cut its tax bill by $6.6 billion from 2023 through 2025. Meta says AI-optimised data centres need extensive testing, and that it invested $200 billion in research and development over five years.

Meta, Barclays, Block cut thousands of jobs as firms shift spending to AI

Companies are cutting jobs and shifting money from staff to artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, as the cost of meeting booming AI demand reshapes budgets. Meta will lay off about 8,000 workers, or 10% of its workforce, and leave about 6,000 jobs unfilled. It expects 2026 expenses to reach as much as $169 billion, driven by infrastructure and AI talent. Block is cutting more than 4,000 of its 10,000-plus employees; its shares are up 19% this year. Kroger will lay off 3,000 corporate staff over three years, and Barclays plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its workforce. Snap is eliminating about 16% of staff, or 1,000 jobs. Coinbase is cutting about 14%, and Microsoft is offering buyouts to about 8,750 US employees.

Meta plans 2-for-1 split as revenue jumps 26% to $64.6B, but free cash flow turns negative

Meta Platforms reported third-quarter revenue of $64.6 billion, up 26% year over year and above the top of its guidance. It also plans to give shareholders one new non-voting Class C share for every Class A and Class B share, which it expects to act like a 2-for-1 stock split. The charter change takes effect January 19, 2027. Meta said the new shares can be used to raise money, pay employees, and make acquisitions without diluting current voting power. Capital expenditures rose to $34.9 billion, and free cash flow fell to negative $2.1 billion. Operating income dropped 37% to $13 billion because of a $9.9 billion legal charge. Meta expects fourth-quarter revenue of $73 billion to $76 billion.

Meta's non-voting share plan, citing tougher capital raising, triggers 7% sell-off amid $145B AI spend

Meta plans to issue a new class of non-voting Class C shares, and its stock fell 7% on Thursday despite strong earnings. The move lets the company raise equity, pay employees and fund acquisitions without diluting the voting power of Mark Zuckerberg, who controls a majority of votes. In its filing, Meta's special committee cited "an increasingly challenging environment for raising capital." It pointed to recent and expected raises at Alphabet, SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI to fund AI growth. Meta says it has enough capital now but wants to act before others absorb available funds. Meta raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $135 billion and $145 billion. Third-quarter revenue rose 26% to $64.6 billion, while capital expenditure reached $34.91 billion and free cash flow turned negative. Meta wants the shares available as early as the end of 2026.
