About the job

Requirements
  • A doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or Solid Mechanics must be completed by the start date.
  • A strong track record of high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals is required.
  • Demonstrated research expertise in nonlinear (finite-strain) continuum mechanics and the mechanics of solids is required.
  • Proficiency in finite-element implementation through at least one of FEniCS/FEniCSx or Abaqus user subroutines (UEL/UMAT) in Fortran, together with scientific programming in Python, is required.
  • A strong command of solid mechanics, especially finite deformation and coupled continuum theories, is required.
  • The ability to translate continuum theory into verified finite-element code, including implementing custom elements and material models, is required.
  • Strong written and oral scientific communication, evidenced by first-author publications and conference presentations, is required.
  • The ability to work independently, manage research milestones, and collaborate within a multi-investigator project is required.
  • U.S. work authorization at the time of appointment and eligibility to work on federally funded research are required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct research on the mechanics of soft solids and develop associated theoretical and computational tools.
  • Formulate theories and experiments, develop computational models, and implement them using tools such as FEniCS/FEniCSx and Abaqus user-element and user-material subroutines (UEL/UMAT).
  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present results at conferences.
  • Contribute to research proposals and technical reports for the sponsoring program.
  • Help mentor graduate and undergraduate students on theory, code, and experiment development.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with nonlinear elasticity, finite deformation mechanics, continuum mechanics, and finite-element implementation in FEniCS/FEniCSx or Abaqus UEL/UMAT is preferred.
  • A strong publication record in mechanics, materials, applied mathematics, or related journals is preferred.
  • Proficiency with high-performance computing (HPC), parallel solvers (PETSc), and version control (Git) is preferred.

View

The University System of New Hampshire is the state's public higher-education system, coordinating the University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University and Keene State College. Together, the institutions offer undergraduate and graduate programs, conduct research and provide public services for New Hampshire communities; UNH Durham is a public land-, sea-, and space-grant research university. USNH also includes the College of Professional Studies and Franklin Pierce School of Law, while its institutions retain distinct academic missions under one Board of Trustees. Created by state law in 1963, the nonprofit system is headquartered in Concord, New Hampshire.
