About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on mechanical design experience in consumer electronics, including personal ownership of products from concept through mass production, is required.
  • Proficiency in daily 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and solid assembly-management practices is required; Creo is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of designing parts for injection molding, over-molding, silicone injection molding, double-shot molding, die-cast metal, computer numerical control (CNC), sheet metal, die-cut, and stamped processes is required.
  • Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and resolving design for manufacturing, assembly, and excellence (DFM/DFA/DFX) feedback with tooling vendors is required.
  • Experience producing manufacturing-ready 2D drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and clear engineering documentation is required.
  • Hands-on experience supporting EVT/DVT/PVT builds at Asia-based manufacturers and willingness to travel to factory sites are required.
  • Professional working proficiency in both English and Chinese is required.

Responsibilities

  • Independently execute detailed mechanical design of consumer electronics products from concept and industrial-design intent through prototyping, validation, and mass production.
  • Create and manage detailed part and multi-part assembly models, maintaining design intent, robust part relationships, and revision discipline.
  • Create mockups and functional prototypes to evaluate concepts, validate fit and function, and accelerate design iteration.
  • Plan and execute design of experiments (DOEs) and engineering analysis to resolve issues found at EVT/DVT/PVT, including sealing and air-tightness, gasket compression, thermal, structural, and cosmetic issues, and carry solutions into production.
  • Package Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antennas, camera optics, infrared and light guides, speakers/microphones, and thermal solutions into compact, sealed, weatherproof enclosures that meet product requirements across environmental conditions.
  • Design parts for injection molding, over-molding, silicone (LSR), double-shot molding, die-cast metal, CNC, sheet metal, die-cut, and stamped processes; perform tolerance stack-up analysis and resolve DFM/DFA/DFX feedback with vendors.
  • Produce 2D manufacturing drawings with critical dimensions, tolerances (GD&T), materials, finishes, and colors; prepare BOMs and request-for-quotation (RFQ) packages; document decisions, analyses, assumptions, and risks according to team standards.
  • Work directly with tooling vendors and original design manufacturer (ODM) partners through tool bring-up, first articles, and EVT/DVT/PVT builds, including on-site support at manufacturing sites in Asia.
  • Partner with Industrial Design, Optics, Acoustics, Electrical Engineering (EE), Radio Frequency (RF), Quality Engineering (QE), and supplier-quality teams on component and finish issues to deliver a fully validated product.

Desired Qualifications

  • Direct experience developing cameras, video doorbells, or similar connected-home devices is preferred.
  • Experience with outdoor/sealed products, including IP-rated enclosures, gasket and seal design, condensation and solar-load considerations, and IK impact resistance, is preferred.
  • Experience with thermal design for passively cooled, sealed devices is preferred.
  • Familiarity with acoustics integration (speaker/microphone sealing), camera optics, infrared illumination, and light pipes is preferred.
  • Experience running DOEs for process/design problem resolution at builds is preferred.

About the Company

Alarm.com

Integrated smart security and energy management

Alarm.com provides integrated smart security solutions for businesses by combining video surveillance, access control, lighting, and energy management into one platform. The system works through devices installed by authorized service providers and connected to a cloud-based platform that is managed via a single app. Customers can monitor and control premises, automatically adjust energy use with smart thermostats, and receive ongoing support through monthly service fees. Compared to competitors, Alarm.com relies on a partner network to install and customize systems and emphasizes an all-in-one solution with recurring revenue, rather than selling standalone hardware. The company’s goal is to offer reliable, scalable security and energy management that is easy to manage for small to medium-sized businesses and commercial enterprises.
