About the job

Requirements
  • At least 8 years of experience designing, building, and commissioning custom capital equipment in advanced materials, semiconductor packaging, battery, display, web converting, or comparable environments where equipment design must preserve chemical or materials-process fidelity.
  • A proven track record of developing first-of-kind equipment from concept to production and delivering solutions to complex problems.
  • Hands-on experience with Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, and equipment qualification.
  • Proven ability to build, test, and troubleshoot complex electromechanical assemblies from concept through commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of 5S principles, design review processes, hazard analysis, and engineering controls for safety and reliability.
  • Proficiency with computer numerical control machining, hand tools, and power tools for assembly, debugging, and fixture fabrication.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and commission production-grade equipment to automate novel manufacturing processes for advanced materials.
  • Design and requisition mechanical machinery and components using computer-aided design, preferably SolidWorks, while managing design specifications and design files, revisions, and workflows in a Product Data Management system.
  • Integrate structures, safety systems, automation, human-machine interfaces, sensing, data acquisition, statistical process control, and health monitoring and alerting for precise manufacturing and high-duty-cycle operation.
  • Define requirements from problem statements, develop solutions with stakeholders, design, test, and iterate to meet requirements, and lead projects using needed resources.
  • Estimate and regularly update schedules to support on-time delivery of machine builds and resolve timeline risks early.
  • Evaluate, downselect, and validate subsystems and components using industry best practices to maximize robustness and future expansion.
  • Rapidly design and launch pilot-scale equipment for new process development.
  • Respond to feedback and feature requests to improve workflow efficiency, quality, and safety.
  • Maintain high standards of safety, organization, communication, and documentation.
  • Mentor and oversee the work of mechanical engineers and assembly technicians.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical and mechanical issues in assemblies and machinery, collaborate with technical support, and purchase necessary parts and equipment.
  • Operate waterjets and mini-mills to fabricate parts for assemblies and assist with general machining tasks.
  • Work effectively in a startup or small-company setting and continuously improve processes and methods.
Desired Qualifications
  • SolidWorks experience is preferred.

About the company

Boston Materials develops and manufactures advanced energy-transfer composites for high-performance electronics, aerospace, and electrified mobility. Its Liquid Metal ZRT® uses vertically oriented carbon fibers embedded in a liquid metal matrix to create a drop-in thermal interface that conducts heat efficiently between components, and is designed for seamless integration into automated assembly. The company differentiates itself by combining Z-axis carbon fiber reinforcement with a liquid metal matrix and scaling via roll-to-roll production using reclaimed carbon fiber, enabling multiple applications from a single platform. Its goal is to scale production to meet industrial demand across semiconductor, aerospace, and electrified-vehicle markets while expanding sustainability through recycled carbon fiber use.
