About the company

Lyft runs a ride-hailing app that connects riders with nearby drivers in the United States and Canada, and its Freenow app books taxis and other rides across Europe. In 2019, it became the first ride-hailing company to go public in the United States, weeks ahead of Uber. Riders see the price before they book and pay through the app, and Lyft keeps a share of each fare while independent drivers, who use their own or rented cars, earn the rest. Lyft also runs bike-share systems such as New York's Citi Bike, sells ads inside its app, and dispatches self-driving cars from partner companies in some cities. Lyft was founded in 2012 and is based in San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Demand keeps growing: active riders rose 17% to a record 30.5 million in mid-2026, including European taxi app Freenow.
  • Finances are steadier: after costs and capital spending, Lyft generated a record $1.12 billion of cash in 2025.
  • Partners bring in riders: a record 30% of North American rides were tied to partners like United Airlines in mid-2026.

What critics are saying

  • Uber is five times bigger: it booked $29 billion of rides in the June 2026 quarter, versus Lyft's $5.5 billion.
  • Stock grants have shrunk: Lyft shares fell 17% in 2026 through October 8, versus 14% for Uber.
  • Labor fights still cost: in October 2026, Lyft settled California's suit over drivers' contractor status for a state-record $272.5 million.

What makes Lyft unique

  • Lyft is also a bike company: city systems using its bikes, docks and software log 180 million rides a year.
  • Lyft keeps robotaxis running: its Flexdrive fleet unit manages Waymo's Nashville cars and opens an 80,000-square-foot depot in October 2026.
  • US drivers get a guaranteed cut: Lyft promises them at least 70% of weekly rider fares, after outside fees.

Blue Shield of California adds ex-lyft CFO to board.

Blue Shield of California adds ex-lyft CFO to board. Blue Shield of California has appointed Erin Brewer, former chief financial officer of Lyft, to its board of directors, the Oakland-based health plan said in an Oct. 15 announcement. Brewer brings more than two decades of experience in finance, strategy, operations and corporate governance across health care, technology and financial services. The appointment matters because nonprofit health plans are under pressure to control costs and premiums while investing in technology and member experience. Adding a seasoned public company finance executive to the Blue Shield of California board signals the plan's focus on financial discipline as it pursues its affordability goals. Brewer's background. Brewer joined Lyft as CFO in 2023, and the company said she helped lead a significant financial transformation, including Lyft's first full year of profitability. She oversaw global teams covering finance, investor relations, internal audit, corporate strategy and business development, according to Blue Shield. Before Lyft, she held leadership positions at Charles Schwab, the software company Atlassian and McKesson Corp., the health care services and pharmaceutical distribution company. She holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor's degree in accounting from Purdue University. Lyft announced Sept. 9 that Brewer would retire as CFO effective Sept. 28 and remain as an adviser through Dec. 15 to support the transition, according to the company's securities filing. Lyft named Michael Brous, a longtime executive, as her successor. Lyft said her departure did not result from any disagreement with the company. Lyft CEO David Risher praised Brewer's tenure when the transition was announced, calling her an extraordinary leader and partner since she joined in 2023. Brewer said at the time that Lyft was in a stronger position than ever and set up for continued growth and profitability, and described the CFO role as the highlight of her career. Her experience steering a public company through a turnaround to profitability is a key part of what she brings to Blue Shield, which faces its own pressure to balance growth, member costs and long-term financial health. What the Blue Shield of California board expects. "Erin brings a combination of financial discipline, operational leadership, and experience transforming complex organizations," said Pamela DeCoste, chair of Blue Shield of California's board. She said Brewer's perspective will strengthen the board as Blue Shield works to make high-quality health care sustainably affordable. The plan said Brewer's cross-industry experience will support efforts to modernize health care delivery, improve the consumer experience and advance long-term financial stewardship in service of its nonprofit mission. Brewer said Blue Shield's commitment to sustainable affordability resonated with her, and that she looks forward to working with the board and leadership team. About Blue Shield of California. Blue Shield of California is a taxpaying nonprofit and an independent member of the Blue Shield Association. It has nearly 6 million members, about 6,800 employees and more than $28 billion in annual revenue, according to the company. Founded in 1939 in San Francisco, it offers health, dental, vision, Medicaid and Medicare plans in California. The plan has positioned affordability as a central theme. In 2024 it launched Pharmacy Care Reimagined, an initiative that restructured how it manages prescription drug benefits, and it has highlighted efforts on prior authorization and health care affordability. It has also contributed more than $60 million to the Blue Shield of California Foundation over the past three years, the company said. A trend toward cross-industry board members. Health plans have increasingly recruited board members from technology and consumer companies as they invest in digital tools and member experience. Brewer's mix of health care distribution experience at McKesson and technology finance at Lyft and Atlassian fits that pattern. What comes next. Blue Shield did not say which board committees Brewer will join. Given her background, finance and audit oversight would be a natural fit. Her role on the Blue Shield of California board will be watched as the plan manages rising medical and pharmacy costs while trying to hold premiums down for members and employers.

Lyft launches Alcove business travel brand, building on $110M TBR chauffeur deal to rival Uber

Lyft is launching Alcove, a brand aimed at the business travel market. It will combine new corporate offerings with UK-based TBR Global Chauffeuring, which Lyft acquired last year for the equivalent of $110 million. Chief executive officer David Risher said Alcove will offer "the highest levels of service" with "great chauffeurs," including preferences such as route, temperature, and window position. The move follows Uber's March launch of Elite, a black-car service for executives and frequent travellers. Uber also bought Berlin-based chauffeur service Blacklane that month. Lyft said the global chauffeur market is worth "tens of billions of dollars." Alcove will first work directly with companies and travel management firms, with a portal and mobile app due next year.

Lyft to launch Alcove global chauffeur brand.

Lyft to launch Alcove global chauffeur brand. October 15, 2026 Lyft will introduce Alcove, a new global chauffeur brand, in early 2027. It brings together TBR Global Chauffeuring's existing network and service with new technology aimed at the corporate travel market. TBR Global Chauffeuring will transition to the Alcove brand, which will operate in thousands of cities across six continents. Existing TBR customers will continue to work with the same service teams during the transition. Alcove will cater for managed corporate travel programmes, bookers and business travellers, including VIP and complex journeys, major events, multi-vehicle bookings and security-sensitive transportation. A new booking and trip-management portal will launch in early 2027, initially for managed business account customers. Self-service access and a mobile app are due to follow later in the spring. Customers will also continue to be supported through direct corporate and travel management company relationships. Lyft Business customers will have access to Alcove, although it will operate as a separate brand. The company said the combination of TBR's more than three decades of chauffeuring experience and Lyft's technology would give travel managers greater visibility and control over ground transport programmes. Alcove follows Lyft's acquisition of TBR and forms a part of the company's expansion beyond on-demand rideshare into premium mobility services. TBR's existing services, including 24/7 support, VIP travel, event logistics and complex trips, will continue under the new brand. Further details of Alcove's technology, services and launch plans are expected in early 2027. David Risher, Chief Executive Officer of Lyft, said: "Lyft is moving up and out, creating customer-obsessed products up and down the value chain and in more places around the world. Alcove supercharges that strategy."

Vietnamese electric taxi firm Green SM rolls into L.A. With 500 cyan cars.

Vietnamese electric taxi firm Green SM rolls into L.A. With 500 cyan cars. Published on October 14, 2026 A fleet of 500 cyan-colored electric cars has hit the streets of Los Angeles, operated by full-time, W-2 drivers rather than gig workers, as Vietnamese ride-hailing company Green SM makes its first entry into the United States market. The vehicles, all VinFast VF 8 electric SUVs, are owned and maintained directly by the company, and riders can book them through an app, by phone or simply by waving one down on the street. The launch marks a notable departure from the model used by Uber and Lyft, which rely on independent contractors driving their own cars. According to the Los Angeles Times, Green SM will start service in Los Angeles with 500 drivers, all employed as full-time staff rather than independent contractors, and the company allows riders to travel across L.A. County and south into Orange County. The Times, which dated the launch to Tuesday, reported that Green SM is a Vietnam-based ride-hailing service founded in 2023 with operations already spanning Asia and Europe, including India, Denmark and the Philippines. A separate account from Vietnamese outlet VnExpress places the launch a day later, on October 14, and describes it as the company's first presence in North America. Green SM's U.S. leadership is framing the move as a chance to reset how ride-hailing treats its workforce. Christopher Walker, head of operations for Green SM U.S., said per the Times that the company's pricing will be competitive with Uber Comfort, setting fares based on time and distance much like its rivals. Walker also said Green SM arrives in Los Angeles with operational experience and a service culture built across its other markets. Hoang Thanh Hang, Green SM's U.S. chief executive, said the company aims to restore dignity to driving as a profession. VinFast vehicles and a global track record. Every car in the Los Angeles fleet was made by VinFast, the top-selling vehicle brand in Vietnam, which completed its transition to building only electric vehicles in 2022, the Times reported. Green SM's own site describes its rides as eco-friendly journeys with zero emissions and no noise, according to greensm.com. The same VnExpress report notes that Green SM already runs electric taxi services in Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Kazakhstan, Denmark, the Netherlands and now the United States. The company is leaning on scale to make its case to new riders. Per the outlet's account, Green SM says it has completed roughly 850 million rides and traveled nearly 6 billion kilometers globally, a record the company says has cut more than 800,000 tons of CO2 emissions. To court new customers in Los Angeles, the company is offering a 50% fare discount, capped at $12 per trip, for each rider's first five trips, the same VnExpress report states. Crowded streets, new competition. Green SM's arrival lands at a moment when Los Angeles is experiencing a surge in transportation options, with robotaxi companies ramping up operations across Southern California, the Times reported. Waymo received approval to expand its autonomous-vehicle service across 18 California counties, according to the Los Angeles Times, with the California Public Utilities Commission authorizing the company to operate in San Diego and Sacramento as well as communities in Marin, Napa, Orange and Riverside counties. Waymo has also said it is preparing to launch rider-only service in San Diego while continuing to validate its technology in Sacramento, and Amazon's Zoox has already launched its first paid, driverless rides in Las Vegas. Green SM's vehicles will compete not just with those autonomous fleets but with Uber, Lyft and traditional taxis for a slice of the city's ride-hailing demand. The Times also noted that California offers new incentives for drivers to buy electric vehicles, and that public officials are working to expand the region's public transit network ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games. For now, Green SM vehicles have not received approval to serve Los Angeles International Airport, the Times reported - a restriction notable given that Los Angeles World Airports requires all ground transportation providers to comply with its Ground Transportation Rules and Regulations, per the agency's own guidance. Riders curious about a company's standing with state regulators can check the California Public Utilities Commission's public listing of transportation network company permits, which includes each carrier's TCP number and current operating-authority status.
