Blue Duck urges Snap to seek external Specs funding, shifting $500M in annual spending

Blue Duck Capital has urged Snap's board to seek external funding for its Specs business and to separate Specs development costs from core operations. The open letter, issued on October 6, 2026, says the move would clarify the value of Snap's augmented reality platform. Blue Duck says ringfencing Specs would shift about $500 million in annual spending off the main business. That would let management focus on advertising and subscriptions. The change would mainly improve how Snap's finances look; the operating challenge stays the same. Snap faces tough competition from Meta, Alphabet, and TikTok, and an ad-heavy model that is exposed when digital budgets soften. Consensus forecasts put Snap's revenue at $8.1 billion by 2029, with earnings of $384 million, against a current loss of $409.9 million.

Snap Specs from $2,195 ($2,395 with cellular case): Verizon data starts at $10/mo.

Snap Specs from $2,195 ($2,395 with cellular case): Verizon data starts at $10/mo. Published on October 15, 2026 at 7:01 am Reading time: About 3 minutes - Written by Emily Thompson Snap's new Specs retail for $2,195 in the United States, and the company has revealed an option for people who want to use the glasses without relying on a smartphone. Snap will offer a Specs Connected Case bundle for $2,395, and says cellular service will start at $10 per month for Verizon subscribers in the US and from $20 per month for other customers. The pricing and availability details were released at Snap's Specs event on September 16. Pre-orders are being taken through specs.com with a refundable $200 deposit, and Snap says shipping is "expected to begin later this fall" in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Charging case adds multiple recharges and built-in cellular. Snap describes the Connected Case as a charging accessory that not only supplies power for the glasses - adding four extra full charges - but also provides its own cellular connectivity. While Snap notes the case will be available separately, the company has not published a standalone price; the bundle that includes the case costs $200 more than buying the glasses alone, and subscribers will need to pay for the monthly data plan on top of that. In the US, data for the Connected Case will be offered through Verizon as a Connected Wearable plan. Snap says Verizon will offer eligible buyers financing options, including a 36-month payment plan, positioning the carrier partnership as a way to make the Specs easier to "try, buy, and stay connected." For Europe, Snap has named local carriers but has not shared plan prices. The company cited partnerships with Orange in France and EE in the UK and said data subscriptions will be provided "through the respective carrier partners," without publishing costs in pounds or euros. To put the pricing in context: Apple's Vision Pro launched in the US at $3,499, while Meta's June-launched AI-enabled glasses start at $299. The Specs are priced closer to the higher end of that spectrum, and the availability of a 36-month finance option through Verizon suggests Snap expects buyers to treat them more like a significant gadget purchase than a low-cost wearable. First hands-on previews in Los Angeles starting October 1. Those who prefer to try the hardware before committing will have an opportunity to do so at a single, public location. Snap says that beginning October 1, a "SPECS First Look" experience will be available at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles. Snap has not provided a specific ship date beyond the broad "later this fall" timeframe, nor has it released any sales or pre-order figures. The $2,195 price itself is consistent with earlier reports from June that suggested the same figure, back when Snap was said to be lining up celebrity endorsements for its marketing push. On the display side, Snap claims the virtual screen produced by the glasses "feels like a 115-inch cinema screen placed about 10 feet away." There is a Travel Mode designed to keep that virtual screen stable during motion - on trains or in airplanes - and Snap says the device supports real-time translation across 60 languages. Content partners include Harry Potter, Spotify and basketball experiences. With a premium price tag, the Specs need a strong set of apps, and Snap has listed its initial partners. Working with HBO Max, Snap plans a Harry Potter-themed experience tied to the upcoming HBO Original Series Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which is due to premiere this Christmas. The Harry Potter Lens will let users receive a Hogwarts acceptance letter, select a wand and cast spells, though Snap hasn't given an exact release date for the Lens itself. Spotify integration will let users play music to match whatever they're doing, and the Specs' built-in browser will stream video from YouTube and HBO Max. Tripadvisor functionality will help find nearby eateries and points of interest, and a Shopify Catalog feature will allow shoppers to place life-size 3D products into their real environment. Some collaborations are planned further down the line. Snap says it is developing interactive basketball experiences with the NBA and WNBA to give fans practice tools, but hasn't specified timelines, and an ALO Wellness Club app is slated to arrive "next year." There's also a golf coaching feature built with input from PGA Professionals. Snap did not disclose technical specifications such as battery life, weight or field of view in this announcement. Until the October 1 demo events and the first customer shipments occur, the confirmed details are the price, the carrier partnerships and the early app lineup; other claims remain the company's descriptions of the product experience. Court finds legal violations at messaging service Snapchat.

Court finds legal violations at messaging service Snapchat. The messaging service Snapchat violates data protection and youth protection, according to a ruling. As emerges from a ruling by Cologne Regional Court, the operators collected and processed user data unlawfully via a chatbot fed with artificial intelligence (AI). 15.10.2026 06:30 Snapchat is a messaging service through which photos, videos and texts are sent. It is particularly popular among young people; the target group is those aged 13 and over. With the Snap chatbot "My AI", users can interact and reveal information about themselves. Snap uses this info to personalize the user experience, for example with ads. Consumer protection advocate sees allegations confirmed by the ruling. The Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) had sued the company Snap Group Limited. "The chatbot presents itself on Snapchat as a friend and encourages users to feed it personal data," says consumer advocate Ramona Pop. "A relationship of trust arises that tempts people to reveal sensitive information about themselves." Children and young people are particularly at risk. "The EU can and must make it mandatory that platforms are set to safe defaults for everyone." Pop criticizes that everything users enter in the chat can be evaluated and used for personalized advertising - including particularly sensitive data such as religion or sexual orientation. However, the processing of such data is only permissible in exceptional cases if there is explicit consent from the data subjects, and for under-16s the clear consent of parents. "However, on Snapchat, consent was not even provided for at all," says the consumer advocate. The judges followed this argument. The best cocktails? Try them out! The ruling is available to the dpa. It also criticized that Snap has set the app by default to show users advertising for alcohol and gambling. The judges emphasize that such advertising may not be aimed at children or young people. In the proceedings, Snap had argued that it does not offer minors advertising for gambling or alcohol because internal advertising guidelines prohibit it. If the AI chatbot provided information about alcohol and gambling, that was not advertising but merely answers to user questions. The plaintiff had made sample inquiries and pretended to be a 14-year-old girl who, for example, asked about the best cocktail. According to the plaintiff, the chatbot's answer was then: "That's a matter of taste! Some popular cocktails are Mojito, Margarita and Piña Colada. Give them a try!" The judges left open the question of whether the AI chatbot's answers constituted advertising. But even if one did not regard the answers as advertising, "there would nevertheless be at least a risk of the defendant committing a first infringement with regard to the serving of advertising in the alcohol and gambling categories to minor users," the ruling states. According to the ruling, the defendant company had tried to evade responsibility to some extent: It was not the company itself that processed the data, but its US parent company Snap Inc. The judges did not let that pass. The ruling is not yet final. Snap left a press inquiry unanswered. According to "Spiegel", the company intends to file an appeal./wdw/DP/jha
