Requirements
  • Board certification as an Intraoperative Neurophysiologist, with D.ABNM designation in good standing through the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and maintain focus and concentration in the operating room environment.
  • Flexibility to work on-call weekends, urgent cases, and non-prebooked ambulatory cases.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring service.
  • Perform neurophysiological monitoring during high-risk neurosurgery and orthopedic cases to help prevent intraoperative neurological deficits.
  • Clinically interpret intraoperative neurological test modalities and communicate patient-related concerns to the surgeon in real time.
  • Perform tests including electroencephalography, somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, electromyography, brainstem auditory evoked responses, F-waves, H-reflexes, direct cortical and spinal cord mapping, depth-of-anesthesia monitoring, and train-of-four monitoring.
  • Analyze and clinically interpret patients' neurological responses during critical moments of surgical procedures.
  • Maintain equipment by performing routine and emergency testing, reporting faults to biomedical engineering, maintaining records, and completing necessary follow-up actions.
  • Maintain detailed written and electronic documentation of procedures and ensure reports are accurate, legible, and complete.
  • Enter patient report data and maintain the patient record database so results are submitted, organized, and accessible for future review.
  • Prepare electrodes and stimulators before surgery in accordance with hospital infection prevention and control policies.
  • Pursue continuing education and professional development as a self-initiated learner.
  • Collaborate with medical staff on research by developing research ideas, collecting research data, reviewing and analyzing data, and assisting with writing and producing research papers.
  • Translate knowledge into practice, provide leadership in practice and teaching, and share best practices locally, nationally, and internationally to advance intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.
  • Develop effective relationships with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other POCU staff to support integrated patient care and advocate for patient safety.
  • Perform other responsibilities consistent with the job description as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in a health-related science discipline, preferably neurophysiology, or a bachelor's degree in a similar discipline.
  • Five years of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring experience.
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of Neurophysiological Monitoring.
