About the company

Capital One runs a consumer and commercial bank that issues credit cards, takes deposits, and finances cars and businesses. Its Venture travel cards and Quicksilver cash-back cards let customers earn rewards on everyday spending, while its online banking tools manage payments and savings. Customers use checking and savings accounts through an app, branches, and cash machines, and commercial clients use treasury tools to manage company cash. The bank earns interest on loans and fees from banking and card transactions, with customer deposits helping fund its lending operations. Capital One earnings: after a double beat the rally is on. October 23, 2026 Key points. * Capital One posted strong Q3 2026 results, with adjusted EPS up 12% to $6.69 and revenue rising 6% to $16.3 billion. * The Discover acquisition appears ahead of schedule, with payment network volume up 25% and efficiency ratio improving despite ongoing integration costs. * Despite rising delinquencies and a post-earnings stock pullback, analysts maintain Buy ratings and raised price targets. * Want to know the moment analysts change their view on Capital One Financial? NYSE: COF delivered a solid Q3 2026 earnings report. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) were $6.69, up 12% from $5.95 a year earlier. Revenue rose 6% year over year to $16.3 billion. Discover more Compare Cards Open Bank Account Track Stock Market The stock got a lift of about 4% the morning after the report was released on Oct. 20. But it gave back those gains and turned lower that day, reflecting declines across the broader market. Investors are getting two different messages. The fundamentals say Capital One's post-merger story is working. The price action says the market isn't ready to believe it. That gap looks like an opportunity. Net interest margin rose 40 basis points to 8.41%. Pre-provision earnings jumped 10% from the prior quarter to $7.5 billion. Management also kept returning cash to shareholders, buying back $2.6 billion of stock in the quarter. The Discover integration is ahead of schedule. The acquisition of Discover in 2025 came with substantial upfront costs that were certainly a drag on Capital One's earnings growth. But the company has promised more - and that "more" appears to be coming. Adjusted EPS growth was up 12% year over year. That's a signal to long-term investors that the company is delivering on the earnings power it promised when it announced the deal. The Discover payments network is a big part of that story. Global Payment Network volume reached $190.9 billion, up 25% year over year. Owning the network lets Capital One keep more of the economics on each transaction. This matters because growth through acquisition is a strategy that only works if the acquiring company can wring out excess costs while keeping the growth engines humming. Just over a year after the acquisition, Capital One appears to be ahead of schedule. The cost side supports that view. Adjusted non-interest expense fell 2% from the prior quarter. The adjusted efficiency ratio improved to 48.76% from 51.38%. Integration isn't free, though. Discover integration expenses still totaled $338 million in the quarter. Rising credit delinquencies weren't a red flag. In the category of two things being true, Capital One reported that domestic card delinquencies of 30 days or more rose to 3.74% from 3.39%. That kind of data point feeds other data that show a stressed lower-income consumer. But context matters. Historically, this is a quarter in which Capital One - and other major card issuers - see an uptick in delinquencies. And the year-over-year comparison, which removes seasonality, shows improvement. Delinquencies were down from 3.89% a year ago. Capital One also released $225 million from its credit loss reserves, mostly in domestic card. Domestic net charge-offs for credit cards fell to 3.98% from 4.71% in the prior quarter. Companies don't release reserves when they expect conditions to get worse. Investments in technology relieve friction and balance risk. Of course, AI was a part of the story as well. Capital One's investment in technology is helping it with both ends of the borrower demographic. One of the more obvious ways is risk management. AI-driven risk assessment is the core of Capital One's edge in mass-market and subprime lending, where telling good borrowers from bad ones is a key concern. Capital One also wants high-spending customers, but without drifting into high-balance revolvers who look affluent but carry risk. Underwriting models help the company thread that needle. Where the company's investments in technology matter most to the premium cardholder is in how they allow Capital One to compete for the experiential dollar (i.e., experience, reward economics, and travel). Examples of those investments paying off include the Capital One Travel app launched earlier this year, real-time fraud detection and authorization that removes the friction of false declines, and data-driven personalized offers and pricing. One sign supporting this argument is that domestic card purchase volume rose 11% year over year to $250 billion. Bullish sentiment points to a rally. In the short time following the report, analysts have maintained their Buy or equivalent ratings on COF and are raising their price targets. That bullish sentiment isn't showing up in the stock price, which has given up most of the post-earnings gains. But much of that can be attributed to the broader sell-off in stocks. At around 10x forward earnings, Capital One isn't overvalued based on its own history or the consumer finance sector. Management is also putting the company's money behind that view. Capital One has repurchased $7.9 billion of stock so far in 2026. The share count is down about 5% from a year ago, and the CET1 capital ratio stands at a healthy 13.8%. COF shares are still down about 7% in the last 12 months and 16% in 2026. Much of that was due to skepticism about how quickly the Discover acquisition would boost earnings. One earnings report isn't a trend. But if a trend forms, as analysts seem to believe it will, Capital One has significant upside. A close above the 50-week simple moving average, currently near $207, would be the first sign of a higher floor. The stock tested that level this week, reaching $211.49 before pulling back. After that, investors will want to see a move above prior resistance around $225, the August high. On the downside, the $175 to $180 range has held as support twice this year. Until the stock breaks higher, the fundamentals are ahead of the price, and patient investors tend to do well on that side of the gap. Capital One Q3 net income hits $3.5B as charge-offs fall and Discover synergies reach $1.8B

Capital One reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $3.5 billion, or $5.61 per diluted share, as higher revenue and lower expenses lifted earnings. Revenue rose 3% from the prior quarter, expenses fell 2%, and pre-provision earnings grew 10%. Domestic card purchase volume rose 11% year over year, and the charge-off rate fell to 3.98%. Legacy Discover card loans fell about 3%, and management expects balances to shrink for several more quarters before growth returns. The company has achieved about $1.8 billion in annualised Discover synergies, ahead of schedule. It expects to finish converting the existing Discover card portfolio to its technology in the first quarter. Net interest margin widened 40 basis points to 8.41%. Marketing spending is set to rise further in 2027.

Points Pulse for October 19, 2026: Capital One's new card, Visa's fee drops for small businesses, and Porter's big birthday giveaway. Oct 19, 2026 Capital One has a flashy new cash back card, Visa is lowering its interchange fees, and Porter celebrates its birthday with a major points giveaway. Lead Writer & Content Strategist Many or all of the products on this page are from partners who compensate us when you click to or take an action on their website, but this does not influence our evaluations or ratings. Our opinions are our own. In this week's edition of NerdWallet Canada's Points Pulse: Capital One launches a contender for the best cash back card in Canada. Just when you thought Capital One was all about entry-level credit cards, they've burst on to the scene with a World Elite Mastercard that's instantly a contender for one of the best cash-back cards in the country. The Capital One Quicksilver World Elite Mastercard has no annual fee and offers 3% cash back on gas and groceries with a 1% base earn rate. The big story here is that, unlike many popular cash-back credit cards, this card has no limits on how much you can earn. Here's the part that's actually wild: the welcome bonus is just as exciting in that you'll effectively get an unlimited 6% back on groceries and gas, as well as 2% everywhere else. Spend $500 per month on gas and groceries, and you'll get $360 back instead of $180. Other exciting features include a 0% foreign exchange fee and some travel insurance coverage, although it lacks travel emergency medical insurance. For those who don't meet the card's $80,000 (individual) or $150,000 (household) income requirement, there's also the Capital One Quicksilver World Mastercard. It offers the same cash-back rates, first-year match and no foreign exchange fees, with a lower income requirement of $50,000 individually or $80,000 per household. Its purchase interest rate is higher, ranging from 21.9% to 29.9%. Nerdy takeaway: Get this card now and take it grocery shopping. Not only can you get 6% cash back on groceries for the first year, its Mastercard badge makes it an option at Loblaws and its affiliates. Just keep in mind that Costco and Walmart don't count as grocery stores where Capital One is concerned, so you'll have to settle for the base earn rate at those retailers. Visa lowers interchange fees for small businesses - will this bring costs down? On October 24, 2026, Visa will expand its lower interchange rates to qualifying small businesses with up to $750,000 in annual Visa sales (up from $300,000). Rates will also fall for businesses already eligible for the program. Of course, it's not all good news - new credit card processing fees are in the cards. A new 1.8-cent USD fee is coming on all domestic transactions in April 2027. Nerdy takeaway: Don't expect lower prices across the board. How much businesses save depends on whether their payment processors pass along the lower interchange costs. Whether shoppers see any savings is another question. We have seen businesses pocket the difference on things like tax cuts, so don't get too excited, and that's not even counting the 1.8-cent transaction fee that's on the horizon. Porter giving away 20,000 points to celebrate 20 years in Canada. Porter is celebrating its 20th birthday and instead of a free meal at Denny's, they're celebrating by giving away 20,000 VIPorter points every day through November 3. Canadian VIPorter members who have flown with Porter or redeemed points between October 1, 2025 and November 2, 2026 are automatically entered to win. Non-members can also join VIPorter and can submit a retroactive flight claim before 10 a.m. ET on November 3 to qualify. We love contests where we don't have to do anything to enter, and for VIPorter members, this may be a nice surprise to wake up to in the next couple weeks. If you want to build your VIPorter points bank for the future, BMO has two VIPorter credit cards available, a World Elite version with travel insurance and round-trip companion pass, as well as the lower-fee BMO VIPorter Mastercard. | Card | NerdWallet rating | Intro offer | Rewards rate | Apply Now | | BMO VIPorter World Elite(R)* Mastercard(R)* | APPLY NOW on BMO's website | | / | 4.9/5 | 70,000 Points + Round-Trip Companion Pass | 1x-3x Points | | BMO VIPorter Mastercard(R)* | APPLY NOW on BMO's website | | / | 3.6/5 | 40,000 Points | 0.5x-2x Points | There's also a no-purchase necessary mail-in entry method for those who don't want to make an account. All it requires is a hand-written 50-word essay that details why you love flying with Porter (this is not a joke: you can read the official rules online). This is to comply with Canadian sweepstakes law. And if you were looking forward to avoiding math, we're sorry to announce you'll also need to solve a BEDMAS math problem to claim the prize. It turns out that our teachers were right in saying that these skills would be important in our futures. Nerdy takeaway: If you were already planning to take a quick Porter flight somewhere between now and the contest closing date, you could still be entered to win. Doesn't mean you should drop everything for a single entry in a contest that thousands of people would enter anyway, but it sure beats writing a handwritten essay. Previous issues: DIVE EVEN DEEPER
