Best training tools from Oshkosh.

Best training tools from Oshkosh. Its roundup highlights the cream of the crop in training products from a busy show. August 5, 2026 Updated: August 6, 2026 With roughly 1,021 exhibitors and a bevy of university and flight schools represented in the Aviation Gateway Park, the sheer volume of new stuff to process has the potential to overwhelm even the savviest EAA AirVenture visitor. Fortunately, AvBrief Media Ltd has sifted through the products announced at the show that specifically target training, and bring you its top contenders. Garmin AXIS training. With the launch of its all-new AXIS flight deck, Garmin has also debuted a training curriculum for the avionics suite. The two-day immersive in-person class comes in several sessions, starting at the end of August and rolling through the year's end so far. The $800 course is only held at Garmin headquarters in Olathe, Kansas, for now, but AvBrief Media Ltd hope that Garmin will be taking the show on the road in the future. The scenario-based course covers the integration with the GNC 355 navigator and GFC 500 autopilot, to cover many of the anticipated installations of the new suite. Expect an emphasis on flight plan management, normal and abnormal procedures, and instrument approaches, making this not only a good intro to the unit but a great refresher for those who want an upgrade to their own performance. Garmin spokesperson Mikayla Rudolph filled AvBrief Media Ltd in on the online version available now: "We currently have an AXIS pilot training eLearning course available for pilots: AXIS Pilot eLearning Course. Of note is that customers that purchase an AXIS flight display will receive, in the printed materials kit, a certificate for free access to this course (one per aircraft)." That course price is $99.95. Rudolph also mentioned the AXIS Maintenance eLearning Course and Instructor-Led classes for Garmin dealers and their technicians, and a course for experimental/homebuilders available in the near future. King Schools MEI course. As announced at the show, King Schools has now released the last of its Cessna Flight Training System courses, covering the Multiengine Instructor rating, Cleared for Multiengine Instruction. If you're training at a flight school using Cessna aircraft, such as a Cessna Pilot Center, you will be familiar with the CFTS - but the good news is that schools outside that network can use the curriculum too. King Schools built a training program starting with the Sport/Private Pilot Course, Cleared for Takeoff, back in 2009, and now completes the lineup, including courses covering the instrument rating, commercial certificate, and initial and instrument instructor ratings. The courseware integrates home study, accomplished online and tracked through the proprietary training management system, with flight lessons that are assessed by both the student and instructor and logged against the syllabus. Flight schools that sign up for the company's partner program also receive discounted pricing and assistance with gaining Part 141 approval within their certificate on the courseware. Course price is $304, including free lifetime access and updates, plus flashcard and companion apps. Cirrus Instrument Rating Program. Cirrus has taken pilot training in house over the past few years, launching companion courseware to be used by its aircraft clients, as well as Cirrus Training Centers (CTCs) and Cirrus Standardized Flight Instructors (CSIPs). At AirVenture, Cirrus updated on its Instrument Rating Program, which launched last fall, but has now tallied more than 500 users. The instrument course has reached version 1.3, and it features Cirrus-focused procedures and systems, and integrates 137 self-study sessions (including 59 lessons and 78 videos) and 47 quizzes with 42 flight assessment events. Working with a CTC or CSIP is required to purchase and complete the course, and it can be accessed on desktop, mobile, or tablet. Course price is $950. Sporty's bestsellers - and jepp in one place. Sporty's John Zimmerman let AvBrief Media Ltd know that the well-established aviation retailer had a great Oshkosh, with two locations where customers could check out the latest gear. While ongoing bestsellers - including the PJ2 GPS Radio, Lightspeed Zulu 4 headset, and Flight Gear line of pilot bags - continued to fly off the shelves, one product that intrigued AvBrief Media Ltd was the Flight Gear Smart Battery Pack in the MAX size. Delivering 27,000 mAh, it has three ports for charging, pass-through capability, and safety features including temperature monitoring and guards against overheating and overcharging. Priced at $149.95, the Sporty's folks haven't found it to interfere with any avionics in the cockpit, so worth a try. Another hot seller? Pilot training courseware. Sporty's now sells Jeppesen's Guided Flight Discovery series, among several other core training programs, so you have a lot of choice if you want to shop in one stop. ASA's old faithful and new friend. With its new location in the Aviation Gateway Park, ASA put itself deliberately among the college, university, and flight school crowd with a trailer full of goodies. As it regularly does this time of year, ASA recently debuted its latest FAR/AIM in multiple formats, which was a hot seller at the show, according to ASA's Greg Robbins. The company (which recently moved from the Seattle area to Kalamazoo, Michigan) has also leveraged AI to create its own ASA Aviator Intelligence app, in collaboration with Aviator Assistant, that pulls answers to learner questions solely from ASA or FAA source material. Featuring a smart search engine, the app prompts questions on just about any flying-related topic, including regulations, procedures, and theoretical knowledge. With an eye toward transparency, ASA built the app to show in each answer not only the original citations and textbook references, but it also links directly to those sources so that you can understand more context and judge the value of the result for yourself. App is priced at $99.99 per year. AvBrief brings you the latest insights, in-depth analysis, and essential updates from the world of general and commercial aviation. Its team is dedicated to publishing stories that matter most to pilots, owners, and industry professionals.

Analog Smartwatch, Souped-Up Tote Bag, Velcro Hiking Shoes, and More Emerging Gear

Analog Smartwatch, souped-up Tote Bag, Velcro Hiking shoes, and more emerging gear. Aug 5, 2026 12:30 PM Innovation can come when people rethink the most basic elements of design, and thats certainly the case with this weeks gear drops. BOTE just dropped some seriously lightweight inflatable kayaks, and Garmin added an AMOLED screen to its analog Instinct Crossover series. And, Japanese brand TENŌRE bucked conventional wisdom on wetsuits, moving the zipper from the back to the neckline for a better fit and seal. If youre prepping for winter, theres new Arctic-ready footwear from Manitobah Boots, a monster puffy from Peak Performance, and cozy fleeces from Sherpa Adventure Gear. Check it all out below. Ultralight Inflatable Kayaks (Photo/BOTE) Alpine lakes and remote rivers just got easier to explore. BOTEs Vali Aero kayak ($1,500) is one of the lightest weight on the market, clocking in at just 16.5 pounds, meaning you can go farther, faster. The difference maker is the AeroULTRAX construction: a heat-welded material that sheds pounds without sacrificing durability. Going ultralight doesnt mean forgoing comfort, though. The Vali Aero comes with padded seating and adjustable footrests for an ergonomic position. With 11-foot solo, 13-foot solo, and 15-foot tandem options, theres a model out there for every adventure. Deepwater Watch (Photo/Timex) Timexs new Deepwater Meridian 200 ($260) is ready to dive in with you as you explore the oceans depths. With a screw-down crown and 44mm shock-resistant case made from stainless steel, this timepiece is water resistant up to 200 m (660 feet). The brand calls the anti-glare sapphire crystal lens nearly impossible to scratch. And the Deepwater isnt just functional: It exudes a sophisticated, classic style that works as well with a suit and tie as it does a swimsuit. Its available in a neutral navy band and dial and a brighter aqua blue option. Velcro Hiking Shoe (Photo/Teva) Most people associate the footwear brand Teva with sandals, but its got a growing line of hiking boots and other adventure-ready footwear. Its most recent drop, the Trailwinder Mid GORE-TEX ($160, womens and mens), is a happy medium between a full-on hiking boot and a more nimble trail runner. The over-the-ankle design keeps out dirt and debris, while the quick-dry mesh upper lets your feet breathe. The Spider Rubber outsole with tiered lugs is meant to give hikers stability and traction on uneven terrain, and the LITE-COMF foam midsole cushions feet. The adjustable Velcro straps mean that stopping to deal with loose shoe laces is a thing of the past. Souped-Up Tote Bag (Photo/Aer) If youre still using your farmers market tote bag for the gym, Aer thinks you can do better. It recently launched the second generation of its signature Gym Tote ($130), upping the capacity to 22 L and adding more internal pockets and organization. This do-it-all bag fits laptops up to 16 inches, and is made with a durable nylon ripstop lining. The designated shoe pocket will keep the rest of your gear away from stinky shoes, and it also works as a storage pocket for dirty clothes while traveling. Backcountry Grill (Photo/GrilTi) Hiking miles into the backcountry doesnt mean you have to sacrifice good food, or your culinary prowess. The GrilTi ($57) is an ultralight, foldable grill made out of titanium, which is rustproof, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. Its got three cooking zones (a solid hotplate, classic grill, and slots for searing) so you can sauté veggies at the same time that you cook a steak. The GrilTi is available in two sizes, with the small version clocking in at 13 ounces and the large at 1 pound, 7 ounces. Its available on Kickstarter for preorder now. Apparel With a Mission (Photo/Sherpa Adventure Gear) Sherpa Adventure Gears new collection of apparel not only helps you stay cozy and stylish, but also to pay it forward. A portion of the proceeds from the Tarcho Collection helps support Room to Read, an educational nonprofit benefiting school children in Nepal. Items include full-zip fleeces, pullovers, vests, beanies, and fanny packs. The designs, which are inspired by Nepali prayer flags, range from all-black with pops of color to striking patterns made with bold primary colors. "Education is the foundation of opportunity,"Tsedo Sherpa-Ednalino, the designer, said in a press release."Our mission is to empower the next generation of Nepali children by ensuring they have access to schooling. Every product in this collection is not just gear for adventure, it's a step toward building brighter futures." Analog Smartwatch (Photo/Garmin) Garmins new Instinct Crossover AMOLED Watch ($650) has all the tech and data you expect from a wearable, but in the sleek package of an analog watch. Stats like step count and heart rate are displayed around the watch hands, which automatically move out of the way when looking at its digital features. Garmin released its first analog crossover in this series just a few years ago. The addition of an AMOLED screen isnt groundbreaking, but it does make the series feel more techy while retaining the classic look of an analog watch. Like any Garmin, its also built to last, with a dual-layered metal bezel and sapphire lens. Its got a 10 ATM water rating and is scratch-, shock-, and thermal-resistant. Maximum Puffy Jacket (Photo/Peak Performance) There are puffy winter coats, and then theres Peak Performances new Helium Diamond Fuse Down Hood ($550). This 700-fill down jacket aims for serious warmth, with each element designed to maximize protection against the cold. According to the brand, the jackets straight quilt lines on the inside pair with curved quilt lines on the outside to deliver better heat retention, while the 3D baffling purportedly reduces cold spots. The hoodie has several other unique design features, like diamond-shaped fibers that interlock for improved durability and under-arm panels for better range of motion. Peak Performance also changed the fit and sizing, making it wider for a roomier, more comfortable fit. Tundra-Friendly Footwear (Photo/Manitobah Boots) For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples in the Arctic wore mukluks, footwear made out of animal skin to protect against the regions bitter cold, a tradition that Manitobah Boots continues today. The brands Two Rivers Collection is the first of its mukluks to add a left and right footbed for added comfort, stability, and traction. The Bear Mukluk ($275) is made with cowhide, faux rabbit fur, and sheepskin to withstand temps as low as -25 degrees. It also has otter-inspired embroidery from Anishinaabe artist Shannon Gustafso. This special otter track design is rooted in its creation stories, and its curiosity helped guide me back to land and ceremony, Gustafso said. Cutting-Edge Wetsuit (Photo/TENŌRE) Fit is one of the most important things about a wetsuit, and Japanese brand TENŌRE thinks its cracked the code with its limited-edition elite wetsuit ($798). It used 3D patterning, as well as data on how much the suit stretched while being tested, to create an optimal fit. Unlike other wetsuits, where the zipper usually sits on the back or front, TENŌRE placed the zipper across the neckline. The brand claims that this design reduces bulk and shoulder restriction, delivering effortless paddling, quick entry and exit, and a watertight barrier against flushing. The no-sew seams are bonded with tape to further reduce the chance of leakage.
