About the job

Requirements
  • Strong empirical research skills in reinforcement learning, large-scale machine learning training, or a closely adjacent area.
  • Demonstrated ability to own large experiments end-to-end, from design through interpretation.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience working with large-scale or distributed machine learning systems.
  • Comfort operating at the research/systems boundary, including debugging where the two meet.
  • Care about the societal impacts of artificial intelligence and responsible scaling.
  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience; relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.
Responsibilities
  • Design, run, and interpret large-scale reinforcement learning experiments, reasoning rigorously about what the data does and does not show.
  • Investigate how reinforcement learning improves as horizon, compute, and model size grow.
  • Build and maintain benchmarks for long-horizon reinforcement learning so progress is measurable and reproducible.
  • Translate validated findings into production training recipes, exercising judgment about when a result is robust enough to ship.
  • Debug complex issues at the seam where research meets infrastructure, including failures that only appear at scale.
  • Partner closely with adjacent reinforcement learning teams across research and engineering and advance the overall reinforcement learning stack.
  • Design a benchmark suite for long-horizon reinforcement learning that distinguishes genuine capability gains from artifacts of evaluation setup.
  • Take a promising experimental finding, stress-test it across model scales, and work with training teams to land it in a production recipe.
  • Investigate an unexpected scaling trend in a reinforcement learning run and trace it to a root cause spanning algorithm, data, and infrastructure.
Desired Qualifications
  • Published or shipped work in long-horizon reinforcement learning or reinforcement learning fundamentals.
  • Experience translating research findings into production training recipes.
  • Demonstrated large-scale industry impact via reinforcement learning interventions.
  • Experience working on frontier-scale training runs with long trajectories.

About the company

Anthropic builds the Claude family of AI models and sells them to businesses, software developers, and consumers, with research on making AI safe and understandable at the center of its work. In 2024 it introduced the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to outside apps and data that OpenAI and Google adopted the next year. People use the Claude app to write and analyze files, programmers hand coding tasks to Claude Code, and companies build Claude into their own products through its API. Anthropic earns money from subscriptions, business plans, and usage-based API fees. Siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei founded Anthropic in 2021 with other former OpenAI employees, and it is based in San Francisco.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Sales are multiplying: Anthropic's yearly revenue pace topped $65 billion in July 2026, over sevenfold since December 2025.
  • IPO plans advanced: October 2026 reports describe investor meetings and a mid-November listing target; staff shares face lockups.
  • Lower office minimum: 627 of 646 Anthropic job posts in October 2026 require at least 25% office time.

What critics are saying

  • Job security rides on growth: Anthropic's IPO prospectus lists $518 billion in cloud and computing bills due in coming years.
  • Defense work stays off-limits: in September 2026, appeals judges voted 2-1 to let the Pentagon keep blacklisting Anthropic.
  • Growth is priced in: Anthropic's valuation reached $965 billion in May 2026, up from $380 billion in February.

What makes Anthropic unique

  • Investors don't control its board alone: Anthropic's independent Long-Term Benefit Trust elects a growing number of directors.
  • It isn't tied to one chipmaker: Claude runs on Nvidia GPUs plus custom AI chips designed by Google and Amazon.
  • It holds back its riskiest model: Claude Mythos 5.1, launched September 2026, goes only to vetted cyberdefenders and life scientists.

Warren presses Anthropic on AI risks ahead of IPO after $16.3B first-half revenue

Senator Elizabeth Warren is pressing Anthropic on the safety of its technology ahead of the company's planned initial public offering (IPO). In a Wednesday letter to chief executive officer Dario Amodei, she cited Anthropic's own warnings that advanced AI could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity." She asked how it plans to curb risks such as loss of control, economic disruption, and misuse for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and requested answers by November 3. Anthropic filed for an IPO with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, and plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. It reported $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026, up 1,300% year over year, and a net loss of nearly $81 billion. Warren warned that the company's size and share-price swings could affect broader markets.

Anthropic's IPO filing reveals 85% gross margin despite $80B net loss

Anthropic's IPO filing shows an 85% gross profit margin on running its existing AI models, a figure Silicon Valley prizes above most others. The Information called it "a reality check" for sceptics who doubted that pay-as-you-go pricing could be profitable. The company still reported a headline net loss of $80 billion. Its margin also excludes the cost of training new models. Even so, 85% tops Meta's ad business at roughly 81-82% and analysts' estimates for Google Search ads at 75-80%. The iPhone sits in the mid-40s. The figure may also bode well for rival OpenAI, which runs a similar model. It is considered less efficient, partly because of its large base of non-paying users.

Stripe alums launch Rocker, an AI work assistant for big businesses, with $13M

Rocker, an AI assistant for large organisations, has emerged from stealth with $12.85 million in funding. Greycroft led the round, with Anthropic, Menlo Ventures' Anthology Fund, Matchstick, and Stripe also taking part. Founded by former Stripe colleagues Alex Vogenthaler, chief executive officer, and Peter Terrill, the app connects to tools such as Google Docs, Slack, and email. It identifies a user's top priorities, flags critical messages and decisions that are slipping through, and cuts busywork. Rocker builds a context graph for each user inside a company's own cloud environment, so it does not access sensitive enterprise data. It is testing with large organisations, including public companies, and opens its waitlist today, prioritising larger teams.

phData raises funding from Gryphon and Anthropic to add 300+ AI experts for Claude

phData, an AI and data services firm, has raised new funding from existing investor Gryphon Investors, with participation from Anthropic. The source gives no amount. The Minneapolis company will use the money to grow its team and expand its enterprise services. It plans to add more than 300 data and AI experts. phData is a member of the Claude Partner Network, Anthropic's programme for firms that help businesses put Claude into production. Its services focus on preparing company data so AI agents give correct answers, and on reworking business processes one department at a time. "Our clients need AI that provides reliable answers and transforms how their business runs," said chief executive officer Ryan Bosshart. Founded in 2014, phData has more than 900 staff across the US, Latin America, and India.

Rishi Sunak earns $2.9M advising Anthropic, Microsoft and Goldman Sachs, up to $10,200 an hour

Rishi Sunak, the UK's prime minister from 2022 to 2024, earned more than £2.2 million ($2.9 million) last year from senior advisor roles at Anthropic, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs. The figures come from the public register of MPs' financial interests, published Monday. Sunak, who remains a member of Parliament, donated the earnings to charity. Microsoft paid him £741,735 a year for an estimated 96 hours of work, about $10,200 an hour. Goldman paid nearly £1.1 million for about 175 hours, or roughly $8,300 an hour. Anthropic paid in equity worth £373,000 ($495,000) when his one-year contract began last October. For an estimated 70 hours, that is about $7,000 an hour.
