About the job

Requirements
  • Have strong technical fundamentals in machine learning, software engineering, systems, statistics, or a related field, and be able to learn quickly across unfamiliar areas.
  • Have hands-on experience with large language models, reinforcement learning, reinforcement learning from human feedback or AI feedback, post-training, evaluations, graders, synthetic data, model training, coding agents, tool-using agents, or production machine-learning systems.
  • Be excited by open-ended problems where the path is unclear, the signal is noisy, and the right answer requires research judgment and engineering execution.
  • Care about product impact and model behavior, not just benchmark movement, and have opinions about what makes an agent useful, reliable, honest, tasteful, and easy to work with.
  • Be able to move from a vague behavioral problem to a concrete experiment by defining a hypothesis, building the pipeline, running the model, analyzing the result, and deciding what to do next.
  • Be comfortable working across research, product, infrastructure, data, evaluations, and safety boundaries, and communicate clearly with each group.
  • Be willing to build systems and processes when the team's needs call for it.
  • Want to train and ship models that make agents useful for developers, enterprises, researchers, and everyday users.
Responsibilities
  • Design and run experiments that improve agentic model behavior across coding, tool use, function calling, computer use, multi-agent collaboration, long-horizon tasks, factuality, instruction following, and calibrated reasoning.
  • Own end-to-end improvements to the post-training stack, including reinforcement learning, data pipelines, graders, reward signals, evaluations, diagnostics, and model-behavior analysis.
  • Build evaluations and environments that expose model failures, then turn those failures into training data, product fixes, or new research directions.
  • Partner with Codex, API/platform, ChatGPT, and general-agent product teams to understand user needs and translate product signal into model improvements.
  • Work on early-training and alignment interventions, including data mixtures, objectives, synthetic data, and evaluation loops that shape downstream agent behavior.
  • Help decide which integrations, capabilities, and fixes are ready for inclusion in major model runs.
  • Improve the machinery for large-scale training and launch, including experiment velocity, reliability, observability, reproducibility, cost, latency, and production readiness.
  • Take on cross-functional projects touching model training, product infrastructure, and the production agent harness, such as multi-agent systems or training directly against production-like environments.
  • Debug hard failures in shipped or near-shipped models and turn qualitative behavior into concrete hypotheses, experiments, and fixes.

About the company

OpenAI researches and builds artificial intelligence models and turns them into products for people, developers, and businesses, with a stated mission of making sure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Its launch of ChatGPT in 2022 brought generative AI into everyday use. People use ChatGPT to ask questions, write, code, and analyze files, developers build OpenAI's models into their own apps through its API, and its Codex agent works through coding tasks on its own. OpenAI earns money from ChatGPT subscriptions, business plans, and API usage. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others co-founded it in 2015; it is based in San Francisco and overseen by a nonprofit, the OpenAI Foundation.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Sales are compounding: OpenAI's yearly revenue pace doubled from $24 billion in March 2026 to nearly $50 billion in September.
  • Equity turns into cash regularly: staff sold $7 billion of shares in August 2026, after $6.6 billion in October 2025.
  • Room to grow: OpenAI plans to nearly double staff to 8,000 by year-end and listed 816 openings in October 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Its chief rival pulled ahead: Claude maker Anthropic's $965 billion valuation in May 2026 topped OpenAI's $852 billion.
  • Profits are years away: OpenAI's own forecast, reported in September 2026, shows $278 billion of cash burn through 2030.
  • Expect leadership churn: 15 senior leaders, including the revenue and applications chiefs, left OpenAI between January and September 2026.

What makes OpenAI unique

  • A nonprofit is in charge: the OpenAI Foundation appoints OpenAI's whole board and held a 26% stake in October 2025.
  • ChatGPT reaches about one in seven people on Earth: 1.2 billion used it each week as of September 2026.
  • Microsoft is a major part-owner: it held about 27% in October 2025 and licenses OpenAI's models through 2032.

AIM Intelligence joins OpenAI's partner network, launching Stinger-Daybreak security assessments

AIM Intelligence, a Seoul-based AI safety and security company, has expanded its cybersecurity collaboration with OpenAI. It unveiled an application security assessment service that links its AI blue-teaming platform, Stinger, with OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity program. The service combines code vulnerability analysis using the Daybreak Blue model, runtime testing with Stinger, and expert review. It covers AI applications, web services, and APIs, and weighs flaws against an application's permissions, configurations, and data flows to show which to fix first. Results include reproduction evidence for validated findings and remediation guidance. The service is aimed at Korean organizations. On October 22 at OpenAI DevDay Exchange Seoul, OpenAI introduced AIM Intelligence as a Select Partner in the OpenAI Partner Network.

OpenAI Fundraising Round Set to Close Soon With UAE Investors, Coatue Leading Investment

OpenAI is aiming to close a $30 billion fundraising round that will value the AI company at up to $1.25 trillion, not including the new investment, before the end of next week, according to a person familiar with the deal. New York-based investment firm Coatue Management and investors from the United Arab Emirates are set to lead the financing round, the person said. CNBC first reported the

OpenAI launches Decisions API to rival TypeSafe, the $7.6B startup behind Jev

OpenAI has made its Decisions API model widely available, entering a market that recently made TypeSafe, a startup founded by a former OpenAI researcher, a $7.6 billion company. The API became available to all customers on Thursday. Decision models act as super classifiers: given a set of options, they choose quickly and rate their confidence. Developers use them in place of large language models to work faster and at much lower cost. OpenAI built its version by reconfiguring ChatGPT Luna. Product lead Nikunj Handa said response times fell from one to three seconds to 100 to 180 milliseconds. Speak, which builds AI language tutors, cut the time between actions from 1.4 seconds to 0.13 seconds. Other early customers included Box, Datadog, and Ramp. On public benchmarks, OpenAI's model ranks eighth and fourteenth, behind TypeSafe's Jev model.

Defenders' window narrows as Chinese AI models close in, while Meta posts $64.6B revenue

Meta said third-quarter revenue rose 26% to $64.6 billion, slightly above its forecast, and announced a new class of nonvoting common stock to raise capital for its AI spending without diluting chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg's control. Shares rose 2% in after-hours trading. Existing shareholders will get one Class C share for each Class A or B share they hold. The stock can be issued from January 19. Meta gave no timing or size for an equity offering. Free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion, against positive $10.63 billion a year earlier, due to AI investment. Full-year capital spending is expected at $135 billion to $145 billion, within its earlier range. Operating income fell 37% to just under $13 billion, partly due to a nearly $10 billion legal charge. A New Mexico judge also ordered Meta to pay $25 billion in a Cambridge Analytica case.
