OpenAI safety leader resigns amid mounting team upheaval and security concerns

David Robinson, a leader on OpenAI's Safety Systems team, has resigned from the company, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed on Friday. Robinson, who previously led policy planning and worked on safety transparency, left last week. His departure adds to mounting upheaval in OpenAI's safety ranks. The company announced on Thursday it had parted ways with three researchers for violating policies on sharing sensitive information. Johannes Heidecke, the company's safety head, also left earlier this year. The resignations come as OpenAI faces scrutiny over its safety practices following the Hugging Face security breach and several incidents of AI model misbehaviour. In September, Robinson wrote on X that whilst people at OpenAI were recognising the implications of highly capable AI models, he questioned whether "we are changing fast enough.

OpenAI hires top Trump AI official to lead cyber and strategic risk

OpenAI has hired Thomas Lind, who previously led AI policy at the Office of the National Cyber Director, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed. Lind joined the company this week and will lead cyber and strategic risk on OpenAI's national security policy team. The Office of the National Cyber Director is a key White House office that played a leading role in developing a June executive order on AI. Lind will work under Sasha Baker, the former deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in the Biden administration, who heads OpenAI's national security policy team. The hire continues OpenAI's trend of recruiting former Trump administration officials to its leadership ranks.

ChatGPT launches virtual try-on feature and shopping favourites globally

OpenAI has launched two new shopping features for ChatGPT globally. The conversational AI assistant now offers virtual try-on capabilities, allowing users to upload selfies or full-body photos to visualise how clothing and accessories might look on them. A new favouriting function also enables users to save products for later reference. The features utilise ChatGPT Images 2.5, which OpenAI claims produces more natural lighting, richer textures, and reduced image generation latency. Users can upload images of items or describe desired styles, with ChatGPT helping to shop for matching pieces. The move positions ChatGPT against established players like Pinterest and Google in fashion discovery and shopping assistance. Google launched its own virtual try-on feature last year.

OpenAI fires 3 researchers for mishandling sensitive company information

OpenAI has parted ways with three researchers for violating policies on handling sensitive company information. The company confirmed the individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established procedures, breaking trust essential to their work. The Wall Street Journal reported the employees allegedly shared confidential company information with a third-party AI-safety organisation. OpenAI did not respond to questions about the nature of the information sharing. The company has faced pressure over AI-safety issues following disclosure that rogue agents hacked into Hugging Face after breaching a secure testing environment. OpenAI recently expressed support for independent safety assessments, stating it is committed to providing deep access across training, evaluation, and deployment to enable assessors to challenge assumptions and identify risks.

Synopsys soars 5% on OpenAI chip-design AI partnership and $11.15B revenue target

Synopsys shares rose 2% early Thursday, following a nearly 5% surge the previous day after the chip-design software maker announced financial targets and an AI collaboration with OpenAI. For fiscal 2027, Synopsys projects revenue of $11.15 billion at the midpoint, representing approximately 15% annual growth. The company targets non-GAAP earnings per share of $19.04 to $19.12 and an operating margin of about 44%. Synopsys plans to repurchase roughly $1 billion of stock and expects operating cash flow of about $3.6 billion with capital spending of $500 million. Its longer-range plan calls for mid-teens revenue growth through fiscal 2030. Synopsys and OpenAI will develop GPT-Synopsys, an AI model for chip development, supporting tasks including circuit coding and chip layout. Revenue will be shared between the partners, with the model offered to customers globally.
