About the Job

Requirements

  • A recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD, earned within the last 0–5 years, in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Geosciences, or Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with synchrotron x-ray techniques such as Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (BCDI), X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS), Phase-Contrast Imaging (PCI), nano-beam and time-resolved diffraction microscopy.
  • Ability to implement AI/ML applications.

Responsibilities

  • Advance understanding of materials under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, particularly across the solid-melt transition and melt-liquid structure.
  • Optimize the application of the APS-upgraded high-brightness and high-coherence beam across APS and at HPCAT, and implement BCDI, XPCS, nano-beam and time-resolved microscopy, pair distribution function (PDF), 3D imaging, PCI, and other techniques for advanced characterization of materials across solid-liquid and melt states.
  • Conduct measurements on transition metals and drive scientific efforts to expand capabilities to high-entropy alloys, advanced manufactured materials, superconductors, and other candidate-proposed materials.
  • Drive scientific advancements and contribute to HPCAT’s long-term vision.
  • Continue to grow and/or implement AI/ML capabilities to advance research efforts.

Desired Qualifications

  • Candidates with a significant background in high-pressure platforms and/or x-ray measurements are encouraged to apply; candidates from Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Geoscience, Engineering, and other scientific backgrounds will be considered.
  • High-pressure background is not required, but the postdoctoral appointee is expected to drive scientific efforts to expand high-pressure research capabilities.
  • Applicants are encouraged to describe how their data-processing and software-development capabilities fit the proposed work and future direction.
