About the company

PayPal runs a digital wallet and checkout button that let people pay online stores and send money to friends and family, and merchants of every size add it to their websites and apps. Its peer-to-peer app Venmo became one of the most common ways for Americans to split bills and pay each other back. Shoppers link a bank account, card or balance once and then pay without retyping details, while PayPal charges merchants a fee on each sale and also earns from currency conversion, consumer loans and interest on customer balances. The company was founded in 1998, was owned by eBay from 2002 until a 2015 spin-off, and is based in San Jose, California.

What believers are saying

  • Every launch reaches a huge audience: PayPal had 439 million active accounts in June 2026.
  • Venmo drives growth: its payment volume rose 14% in the quarter ending June 2026, a seventh straight double-digit gain.
  • Leadership brings a turnaround playbook: Enrique Lores, HP's CEO for nearly seven years, took over PayPal in March 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: in May 2026, PayPal announced plans to cut 20% of staff over two to three years.
  • Phone wallets squeeze its checkout button: Apple Pay and Google Pay compete for the same online checkout clicks.
  • Profit growth trails sales: transaction margin dollars, revenue left after processing costs, rose 1% in the quarter ending June 2026.

What makes PayPal unique

  • PayPal works both sides of checkout: its wallet serves shoppers while Braintree processes cards for other brands, unlike Apple Pay.
  • It has its own digital dollar: PYUSD, a stablecoin issued for PayPal by Paxos, works inside PayPal and Venmo.
  • Its reach is unusually global: PayPal serves consumers and businesses in nearly 200 markets, while Block's Cash App covers two.

PayPal's lending arm grows fast as Stripe's $60.50-a-share bid collapses

PayPal's lending arm may be its best shot at faster growth after a reported takeover bid fell through. Stripe and Advent offered $60.50 a share in July, according to Bloomberg, but walked away in late August without a deal. Branded checkout payment volume grew just 2% in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. Financial services, which covers credit and Buy Now Pay Later loans across PayPal and Venmo, is on pace to grow revenue at least twice as fast as the company in 2026. Buy Now Pay Later payment volume rose 26% in the quarter. PayPal reported $8.68 billion in revenue, up 4.8%, and expects total transaction margin of about $15.6 billion in 2026. It plans a consumer lending partnership with Amazon in Germany and Austria, and expects momentum from new investments to build in the second half of 2027.

Glance and PayPal bring ai-powered shopping and checkout to tens of millions of U.S. Consumers.

Glance and PayPal bring ai-powered shopping and checkout to tens of millions of U.S. Consumers. PayPal brings its agentic commerce services to Glance, providing the commerce capabilities that turn AI-powered product discovery into trusted transactions. Glance, an AI-powered personal shopping platform backed by global technology company InMobi, announced an agentic commerce integration with PayPal, bringing real-time product data and native checkout directly to Glance for tens of millions of consumers in the United States. Now consumers can discover and visualize products, build a cart, and complete their purchase by leveraging PayPal's trusted offerings without leaving the experience. "The lines between where people discover, shop, and buy are disappearing," said Mike Edmonds, Vice President of Agentic Commerce at PayPal. "Our goal is to help prepare merchants for a future where commerce can happen anywhere. As emerging AI shopping agents like Glance change how people shop, PayPal gives a reliable way to buy with confidence." Pre-installed on millions of phones by telecom operators and device manufacturers, and available for download on additional devices, Glance brings AI-powered shopping directly into consumers' hands. From a single photo, shoppers using Glance can generate images of themselves to virtually try on clothes with an AI avatar and share looks with friends. When ready to purchase, shoppers can use PayPal to complete their purchase without being redirected to another site. As the only partner to provide native in-app checkout on Glance, PayPal is accelerating the path to purchase for consumers. For retailers, the integration provides a simple way to extend their storefronts into Glance's platform. PayPal's agentic commerce services allow merchants to easily connect to multiple AI-powered shopping experiences through a single integration, surface real-time product information such as availability and pricing, and complete transactions while maintaining control of their customer relationship - enabling trusted commerce between consumers, merchants and AI agents. "Glance meets consumers at the moment of inspiration, before they've even thought to search. Bringing native PayPal checkout into that experience means we can now carry consumers from the moment something catches their attention through purchase in the same flow," said Mansi Jain, Chief Operating Officer at Glance. "That makes Glance more valuable to merchants because they can reach consumers earlier, help them evaluate what to buy, and give them a direct way to complete the transaction. As AI takes on more of the shopping journey, connecting discovery with commerce in the same experience becomes increasingly important." Glance is already embedded across more than 60 million mobile and CTV devices, through relationships with leading device manufacturers, including Samsung, Motorola, DirecTV, Google's Android TV, and two of the top three U.S. mobile operators. With the addition of PayPal, Glance can bring full-stack agentic commerce to more merchants, connecting real-time product data, cart and checkout in one experience.

Trump-linked stablecoin USD1 adds $427 million in a single week.

Trump-linked stablecoin USD1 adds $427 million in a single week. USD1 now sits at $4.85 billion in circulation, split across Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana, making it the fourth-largest dollar stablecoin behind only USDT, USDC and Sky's USDS. Critics in Congress have flagged conflict-of-interest concerns tied to the Trump family's involvement. A dollar stablecoin tied to the sitting president's family just jumped past PayPal's and is closing in on the world's third-biggest. Nobody saw that growth rate coming this fast. USD1, the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by World Liberty Financial, grew 9.7% in the past seven days, adding roughly $427 million to reach $4.85 billion in circulation, according to a report from The Defiant. That makes it the fourth-largest dollar stablecoin on the market, trailing only Tether's USDT, Circle's USDC and Sky's USDS. World Liberty Financial is the crypto venture launched in 2024 by Donald Trump's sons and business associates, with the president himself publicly tied to the project. USD1 isn't a side product. It's the company's main bet, and right now that bet is paying off faster than almost anything else in the stablecoin market. Supply doesn't sit in one place. Ethereum carries $1.99 billion of USD1, about 41% of the total, according to The Defiant's breakdown. BNB Chain holds $1.80 billion, or 37%, and Solana accounts for $1.02 billion, roughly 21%. That spread across three major chains is itself a signal: USD1 isn't riding one ecosystem's trading volume, it's getting pulled into liquidity pools and trading pairs across several networks at once. A 9.7% weekly jump is not organic retail demand for a dollar token. Stablecoins grow that fast for one of two reasons: a major exchange or trading desk decides to mint a large batch for market-making, or a protocol incentivizes liquidity providers to hold it. Either way, someone with real capital made a deliberate decision to park nearly half a billion dollars into a token controlled by a company whose equity and governance token are tied directly to the Trump family's business interests. Allegations of market manipulation tied to Trump-family crypto ventures are drawing intense Reddit engagement, with on-chain data showing high insider token concentration and promotional dynamics that existing regulatory frameworks were not built to police. The situation is becoming a structural test case for whether political access can function... - how to regulate political memecoins and insider trading - Trump crypto market manipulation and SEC enforcement tools That's the part that makes USD1 different from every other stablecoin racing up the rankings. Sky's USDS, the fifth-place token, is Tether and USDC's growth has nothing to do with American political power. World Liberty Financial's does, and the ethics scrutiny around that has followed the project since launch, with critics in Congress flagging the conflict-of-interest questions raised by a sitting president's family running a financial product that foreign governments and institutions can use to curry favor. World Liberty Financial has brushed off that criticism before. The company has said USD1's reserves sit in short-term U.S. Treasuries, dollar deposits and other cash equivalents, with custody handled by BitGo Trust. That's a conventional structure, no different from how Circle backs USDC. The unconventional part is who's collecting the float income on $4.85 billion in reserves. The stablecoin market USD1 is climbing into. The overall stablecoin market sits above $300 billion, and Tether and USDC alone still account for the overwhelming majority of it. USD1 crossing $4.8 billion doesn't threaten that duopoly yet. But it does mean World Liberty Financial has built, in under two years, a stablecoin bigger than long-established competitors like PayPal's PYUSD, something most new entrants never manage. Frankly, the speed is the story here, not the size. A lot of stablecoins launch with hype and then stall once the initial liquidity incentives dry up. USD1 keeps adding hundreds of millions in a single week, long after its March debut. That kind of sustained inflow usually means it's being integrated into exchange trading pairs and DeFi protocols as working capital, not just held as a speculative bet on the Trump brand. Whether regulators or Congress move to scrutinize that growth is a separate question from whether the token works as designed. Right now it is working exactly as designed, and it's growing faster than almost anything else in its category. ALT5 Sigma, the Nasdaq company chaired by World Liberty Financial's Zach Witkoff with Eric Trump on its board, moved $99.7 million in WLFI tokens this week while sitting on an $853 million unrealized loss. The company has borrowed $15 million from World Liberty Financial itself to stay afloat, even as it flagged going-concern doubts to the SEC. - AI Financial token holdings decline rapidly - Trump crypto bet balance sheet stress Join the discussion. Seven S&P 500 stocks need 200%+ rallies to reclaim all-time highs

Seven major S&P 500 companies with market capitalizations exceeding $20 billion need to rally at least 200% to reach their previous all-time highs, according to Bespoke. The struggling firms include PG&E, PayPal, Ford, Nike, Las Vegas Sands, Zoetis, and Crown Castle. Nike has experienced particularly poor performance, with the company's stock trading at record lows and its dividend yield approaching 5%. Recent quarterly results showed Nike Brand sales fell 4%, online sales dropped 13%, Converse sales declined 28%, and China sales crashed 26%. CEO Elliott Hill indicated that weakness in the sportswear market would persist. PayPal faces intense competition in the payments sector. New CEO Enrique Lores reportedly declined a buyout offer from Stripe and will focus on cost reductions and improving customer experience.
