What believers are saying

  • Subscriptions extend GM revenue beyond car sales: OnStar One bills monthly or yearly for safety and connectivity.
  • Systems engineers get architecture ownership: GM's Core OS staff role shapes foundations across Linux, Android and QNX.
  • Affordable SUVs find buyers: GM reported record quarterly small-SUV sales in October 2026, led by Trax and Envista.

What critics are saying

  • China profits depend on partners: GM shares its vehicle ventures with SAIC amid excess capacity and domestic competition.
  • Demand is uneven: GM reported U.S. sales down 6% in October 2026, citing EV weakness and discontinued vehicles.
  • IT jobs face restructuring: GM confirmed global role cuts in May 2026, with reports estimating 500 to 600 employees.

What makes General Motors unique

  • GM shares battery production with LG: their Ultium Cells venture operates plants in Ohio and Tennessee.

GM shares fall 6.8% despite record $50B Q3 revenue as leverage fears bite

General Motors shares fell 6.8% to about $77 on Tuesday, even after the automaker reported record third-quarter revenue of $50 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $3.70. Traders appeared worried about costs and leverage. Revenue rose about 3% from a year earlier. Net income climbed to $3.3 billion from $1.3 billion, and adjusted earnings before interest and taxes reached $4.1 billion. Adjusted automotive free cash flow was $5.9 billion. GM raised its full-year guidance to $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion and announced a $20 billion buyback. Bears point to $7.4 billion in electric vehicle restructuring charges, with about $1 billion still to come. US EV sales fell 62% in the quarter.

GM's $20B buyback wins Wall Street praise but draws UAW fury over "mass looting

General Motors' board authorised a $20 billion multiyear share buyback on October 20, the largest in the company's history. Chief executive officer Mary Barra said the shares are undervalued and the move shows the board's commitment to returning cash to shareholders. United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain condemned the plan, saying it comes while "tens of thousands of autoworkers have no retirement security." He called buybacks "legalized mass looting" and said the UAW will remember it when contract talks resume in 2028. GM said it has reinvested more than $100 billion in the business since 2020. It has repurchased $42.7 billion of shares since 2015. Its shares closed at $77.10 on October 20, down 6.8%.

GM shares fall 7.55% despite $20B buyback and higher cash-flow forecast

General Motors shares fell 7.55% to $76.50 in premarket trading on October 20, even after the carmaker announced a $20 billion buyback and raised its cash-flow forecast. GM now expects adjusted automotive free cash flow of $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion, up from $9.5 billion to $11.5 billion. That lifts the midpoint by $1.5 billion, or 14.3%. It narrowed its adjusted EBIT guidance to $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion, leaving the midpoint at $15 billion. Third-quarter revenue was about $50.02 billion, with adjusted EBIT of $4.11 billion. The buyback has no expiration date and can be suspended.
