Requirements
  • Massachusetts state dental assistant license.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Radiology certificate.
  • OSHA/infection control training.
  • Completion of all continuing education requirements for dental licensure.
Responsibilities
  • Verify patient markers to determine that the correct patient is present for the dental appointment or procedure.
  • Expose and process radiographs to ensure diagnostic quality.
  • Prepare the dental treatment room before each procedure in full compliance with infection control protocols and guidelines.
  • Process instruments, including disinfection, sterilization, and monitoring of sterilization dates; maintain dental equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and scheduled maintenance requirements.
  • Conduct spore testing and document proper autoclave function and instrument sterilization.
  • Maintain the log and schedule for dental office equipment maintenance and participate in timely daily, weekly, or biweekly equipment maintenance according to department protocols.
  • Demonstrate competency in four-handed dentistry.
  • Maintain inventory supply control by tracking usage, recording low supply levels, and communicating inventory information to the Purchasing Coordinator.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with Health Center policies, HIPAA regulations, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Ensure proper documentation, including consents and medical histories, is presented to patients by procedure and scan the documents into the dental record.
  • Record vital signs on all first-time visits and before other procedures outlined by the Dental Department.
  • Perform minor laboratory procedures such as taking initial impressions and pouring stone models.
  • Track laboratory cases by entering departure and arrival dates and logging other pertinent information to support compliance with department protocols.
  • Assist and collaborate with the Dentist in delivering dental care using aseptic techniques and infection control standards.
  • Participate in coordinating care for individual patients, support patients and families in self-management, engage in health center projects addressing specific patient population needs, and use appropriate communication and health literacy strategies with patients.
