About the job
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, planning, management, or a related field is required; applicants with eight or more years of related service may receive credit toward the minimum educational requirement.
- Ten years of experience in civil engineering, planning, public administration, parks and recreation management, or a related field, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
- Experience selecting and implementing an asset management system.
- Experience in organizational development.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan is required.
- Knowledge of planning, engineering, and parks and recreation operations.
- Knowledge of computer systems.
- Ability to delegate authority and responsibility while maintaining appropriate operational control.
- Ability to make strategic decisions about staff and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the Board, the public, outside agencies, and employees.
- Ability to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays, depending on events and programs; schedule adjustments may be required for organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

- Ability to use a personal computer and engineering and/or planning software, database, scheduling, publishing, spreadsheet, and word-processing software, as well as a calculator, copier, fax machine, phone, radios, and automobile.
- Plan, organize, and direct designated engineering activities; assign, review, and evaluate staff work.
- Manage assigned operations according to standards established by the Chief Executive Officer and Commission.
- Oversee employee management, including hiring, training, annual performance appraisals, and discipline in accordance with policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Ensure engineering operations comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements.
- Serve on the HCMA Leadership Team and participate in developing and implementing goals, policies, and procedures.
- Oversee the design, engineering, construction, and scheduling of capital improvement and maintenance projects.
- Decide on design procedures, interpret design criteria, check plans and specifications for accuracy and completeness, and interpret and apply relevant codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
- Coordinate bidding, contract, and procurement practices.
- Manage contracts and ensure compliance with specifications and terms.
- Plan and manage engineering projects by defining scope, identifying team members, developing project plans, obtaining approvals, securing resources, developing specifications, establishing performance criteria, controlling change orders, and evaluating results.
- Provide technical assistance to staff; supervise and participate in work by staff and consultants to prepare project plans, agreements, specifications, cost estimates, and contract administration for capital projects.
- Prepare and administer operating and capital improvement budgets.
- Work with the Chief of Planning and Development and District Park Superintendents to evaluate needs and develop plans and schedules for long-range capital improvement and maintenance projects.
- Develop and assist with implementing preventative maintenance schedules.
- Provide professional advice to the Board of Commissioners and make presentations to the Board.
- Engage the Board on policy matters and communicate information, analysis, recommendations, and options for Board consideration.
- Collaborate with the Chief Operations Officer to direct and administer operations, achieve effective use of personnel, facilities, and equipment, and establish a productive employee management culture.
- Research alternative funding methods and coordinate the grant application process.
- Communicate with agencies and institutions conducting research and planning on physical, social, and economic factors relevant to regional recreational services.
- Act as project engineer of record on projects as directed.
- Serve on assigned committees, such as the Safety Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.
- A master's degree in civil engineering, planning, management, or a related field.

(WAVE) - Live music, movie nights and all sorts of outdoor fun are returning to the Iroquois Amphitheater. Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the 2026 season of the Iroquois Amphitheater on Tuesday. Metro Parks has teamed up with Danny Wimmer Presents, the group behind events like Bourbon & Beyond and Louder than Life, to plan it all. The season kicks off with a performance from singer Ethel Cain on April 29, with tickets on sale right now. Throughout the year, there will also be performances from Queensrÿche, Andy Grammer and so much more. Outdoor movie nights are also returning with films like The Big Lebowski, Star Wars: Rogue One and Rocky Horror Picture Show. More shows and events are expected to be announced later this year. This summer the Metroparks are hosting adaptive recreation programs and working on updates to their ADA Transition Plan as they work to continue to work to have a barrier-free Metroparks system.
