Requirements
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • At least 10 years of in-house counsel experience.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, procedures, state and federal regulations, executive orders, and political processes.
  • Ability to identify and anticipate legal risks and select the best course of action to deter legal complications.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas verbally and in writing to diverse audiences, using legal terminology as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of business principles to plan, allocate resources, and coordinate strategic and tactical objectives.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and standard office equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice and representation to the Medical College of Wisconsin regarding legal matters in higher education, research, health care, and community service, with emphasis on contractual matters and research operations.
  • Provide legal guidance on clinical trials, institutional review board matters, federal research regulations, data sharing, HIPAA privacy and security, bioethics, human and animal subject protections, industry collaborations, scientific misconduct, material transfer agreements, corporate compliance, global research laws, the General Data Protection Regulation, and export control laws.
  • Review, draft, negotiate, and manage contracts and business matters involving clinical partners, including professional service agreements, medical director contracts, and clinical affiliation agreements.
  • Advise on fraud and abuse laws, billing, and reimbursement.
  • Provide legal support to the Purchasing and Procurement office by reviewing contracts for new business, procurement, and general operations.
  • Advise on insurance, indemnification, and limitation of liability.
  • Advise philanthropy operations on charitable giving, sponsorship, building naming agreements, and other philanthropic agreements.
  • Provide legal advice on intellectual property matters involving trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, and potential infringement.
  • Serve as a resource on brand and marketing matters and advise on fair-use questions.
  • Draft legal documents, including confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements.
  • Advise on legislative and other important legal developments affecting the Medical College of Wisconsin and its operations.
  • Perform legal research and draft policies and legal documents.
  • Provide opinions on a broad range of legal matters.
  • Interact regularly with officers, senior associate deans, department chairs, faculty, top-level management officials, and senior attorneys in other organizations.
  • Carry out assignments independently and make final legal determinations in matters of substantial impact.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience at an academic medical center.
  • Wisconsin bar admission within one year for an attorney admitted to practice in another state or territory or the District of Columbia.
