About the company

Fortera develops materials technology to decarbonize cement by capturing CO2 from existing cement plants and turning it into stable carbonate with its ReCarb process. The result is a cementitious material with a lower carbon footprint. Fortera operates a production facility in Redding, California, and also partners with established cement producers worldwide to integrate ReCarb into their plants, enabling faster adoption across the cement and construction value chain. The company relies on a large patent portfolio (over 100 patents) and significant venture funding to scale its technology and expand globally. Its goal is to reduce emissions in cement production by providing low- and zero-carbon cement through in-plant capture and mineralization, and to broaden access to sustainable building materials.

What believers are saying

  • Microsoft invested through Climate Innovation Fund and secured procurement rights in 2025.
  • Graymont partnership, announced August 6, 2025, expands bolt-on deployment across existing lime assets.
  • Redding plant is operating, giving Fortera a live commercial validation site.

What critics are saying

  • Fortera still depends on massive capital raises for 300,000-400,000-ton plants.
  • If cost parity slips, Microsoft and MLC orders stall by 2027.
  • Without first-plant financing, Fortera remains a pilot supplier and exhausts runway.

What makes Fortera unique

  • ReCarb mineralizes captured CO2 into ReAct cement, not just offsets emissions.
  • September 8, 2026 MLC deal targets first 300,000-ton commercial ReAct plant.
  • ReAct meets all six ASTM C1157 categories, simplifying procurement across uses.

Fortera and MLC to build 300,000-ton low-carbon cement plant in the US

Fortera and Mississippi Lime Company have signed an agreement to develop a commercial facility producing over 300,000 tonnes of low-carbon ReAct cement annually. The plant will use Fortera's ReCarb technology to capture industrial CO₂ emissions from MLC's lime production and convert them directly into cement. Fortera's ReAct cement, which is nearly 50% captured CO₂ by weight, complies with ASTM standards and can be used standalone or blended with ordinary Portland cement. The company operates a 15,000-tonne-per-year facility in Redding, California, and claims its technology can produce cement at cost parity with portland cement whilst cutting CO₂ emissions by 70%. The project will add domestic cement production capacity in the US, where imports currently account for roughly a quarter of annual consumption.

Fortera appoints ex-SolarCity finance lead as CFO after raising $10B+ in cleantech capital

Fortera, a cement manufacturer, has appointed Albert Luu as chief financial officer to support its transition to commercial-scale deployment. Scott Healy, who served as CFO since December 2022, has moved to the newly created role of chief origination officer. Luu brings over 20 years of experience in capital markets and finance across energy and hardtech sectors. He previously led finance at Heirloom and was an early finance hire at SolarCity, helping pioneer capital markets infrastructure for residential solar. Throughout his career, he has raised more than $10 billion in capital. Fortera operates a 15,000-tonne-per-year facility in California and is developing a 300,000-tonne-per-year commercial plant. Its ReAct low-carbon cement is the first single product to meet all six ASTM C1157 performance categories. Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund has made a strategic investment in the company.
