Greek-American Peter Sellis takes over product at Musk's X.

Greek-American Peter Sellis takes over product at Musk's X. Greek-American tech executive Peter Sellis has joined X to lead product, taking over from Nikita Bier at Elon Musk's social media platform after a career at Snap, Discord and Microsoft. Sellis announced the move in a post on X on Monday. "I'm joining the team at @X to lead Product," he wrote. He also said he is "a huge believer" in the mission of Musk's SpaceX. Discover more Greek News Subscription Greece Travel Guide Greek News App According to The Verge, Sellis replaces Bier after his one-year stint in the role. Bier announced in August that he would step down, Business Today reported. However, he will stay on for a time as an adviser. Musk also thanked him publicly on X. "Thanks for helping make this platform much better! You will be missed," he wrote. Who is Peter Sellis? Peter Sellis has spent more than 15 years building consumer apps. He was head of product at the streaming company Ustream from 2009 to 2012. After that, Sellis worked at the venture studio Science Inc. In 2015, he joined Snap, where he spent seven years and rose to vice president of product. According to Business Today, he built the revenue product team that grew into a business worth more than US$4 billion. Later, he became senior vice president of product at Discord. Before joining X, he served briefly as a corporate vice president at Microsoft AI. What Peter Sellis plans for X. In his post, Sellis said X is "the best way to find out what's happening in the world right now and talk about it". He said his goal is to speed up the platform's recent momentum for users and businesses. In addition, he wants to make the product "beautiful and useful". Still, X has not yet said what his appointment will mean for users, Business Today noted. Finally, Sellis ended with a joke for his new audience. "I'm sure the replies will be measured and magnanimous," he wrote. By Tuesday, the post had drawn more than two million views and over 2,500 replies. Musk's wider tech empire has been busy too. For instance, Musk's Grok AI released its first 'Odyssey' episode, and Musk has also shared Marco Rubio's Pnyx speech with his followers. The move comes weeks after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis headed to Silicon Valley to court tech investment for Greece. In short, Sellis now holds one of the most visible product jobs in tech, at the helm of X. Contact its newsroom to share your updates, stories, photos, or videos. Meta, Barclays, Block cut thousands of jobs as firms shift spending to AI

Companies are cutting jobs and shifting money from staff to artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, as the cost of meeting booming AI demand reshapes budgets. Meta will lay off about 8,000 workers, or 10% of its workforce, and leave about 6,000 jobs unfilled. It expects 2026 expenses to reach as much as $169 billion, driven by infrastructure and AI talent. Block is cutting more than 4,000 of its 10,000-plus employees; its shares are up 19% this year. Kroger will lay off 3,000 corporate staff over three years, and Barclays plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its workforce. Snap is eliminating about 16% of staff, or 1,000 jobs. Coinbase is cutting about 14%, and Microsoft is offering buyouts to about 8,750 US employees.

Snap taps Robert Downey Jr. as customer chief to promote $2,195 Specs AR glasses

Snap Specs has named Robert Downey Jr. its honorary chief customer experience officer ahead of the fall launch of its $2,195 augmented reality (AR) glasses. The glasses layer apps, games, and an AI assistant over the real world. Snap did not disclose the terms of the deal. In June, tech reporter Alex Heath said Snap was in talks to pay Downey about $100 million; neither side has confirmed that figure. Snap stock fell when chief executive officer Evan Spiegel unveiled the glasses in June. It has gained almost 40% over three months, but remains 22.48% lower since the start of the year. Meta sells its own $1,299 VR glasses, though that is a VR device rather than AR glasses.

Snap enlists Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. to develop SPECS experiences.

Snap enlists Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. to develop SPECS experiences. Snap announced that actor and producer Robert Downey Jr. will work alongside the company's augmented reality team to develop original content, Lens experiences, hardware collaborations, and more for its SPECS AR glasses. The News. Robert Downey Jr. has joined the company's Specs team as honorary Chief Customer Experience Officer (CCEO), which the company says will help "guide customers to understand and imagine what's possible with SPECS." The company says the Iron Man star will work across "different parts of the SPECS organization to explore new capabilities, shape new Lens experiences and develop original content." Downey Jr. will also collaborate on hardware and in-person experiences, the company says. "Trying is believing. Having tested practically every wearable tech that's come to market in the last 20 years, and been largely unimpressed, I was absolutely sold on SPECS within 40 seconds," said Downey Jr. "The applications are endless. Families can share experiences instead of hunching over devices, skills can be honed, big business can streamline development. In short, it delivers on the promise of AR glasses made by a certain techno optimist superhero I portrayed. Life imitates art - imitates life! I've never experienced the confident, warm and creatively inviting atmosphere that Evan has cultivated at SPECS anywhere else in the tech sector. Wait'll you see what we create for you to enjoy." This follows last month's big Specs event, where the company unveiled a host of new software and partnerships for the device, chief of which was Specs Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service that surfaces contextual information. Snap also revealed immersive entertainment streaming, Spotify, interactive Harry Potter experiences, NBA/WNBA training tools, multiplayer games, navigation, translation, and 3D shopping. As the company's first consumer-oriented pair of AR glasses, Specs is expected to ship sometime this fall in the US, UK and France starting at $2,195, with an optional cellular charging case bundle costing $2,395. My take. As reported by Mixed in June (via Skarred Ghost), Robert Downey Jr. was offered some $100 million in company stock to essentially try to make Specs look cool. The details of that report still haven't been verified, and it wasn't specified whether that included stock in Snap, or in the now-separate Specs entity. Still, having played Tony Stark for nearly two decades now, Downey Jr. is in a unique position to relate to consumers and help them understand what augmented reality actually is, and what it isn't. And let's face it, 'honorary CCEO' really just means he's a high-profile brand ambassador, or long-term marketing asset. To boot, Downey Jr. launched a collection of short videos showing Specs in action, which the company debuted as adverts during the New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers game on October 20th, with plans to release more during Game 1 of the World Series on October 23th. It shows him using Specs as a private screen, golf tutor, tracing guide for a portrait - the sort of not too far out things sport-watching middle America can latch onto. One fairly hyperbolic video though should raise some eyebrows at what the company, and Downey Jr., are ultimately trying to achieve with Specs: While Specs may turn out to be the best AR platform consumers will be able to get their hands on in the near future, it's far off from replacing one, let alone a table-full of devices Downey Jr. throws in the trash for his iconoclastic "this changes everything" moment. I'm not old enough to have ever actually seen one before, but it all reminds me a bit of IBM Simon from 1994. Impressive, expensive, not really at all for consumers, and more of a precursor of things to come. I don't think St. Uriel Education Pte Ltd'll have to wait 10 more years for AR to have its iPhone moment, although I wouldn't expect it from a first-gen consumer device either. I get it though. Robert Downey Jr. can say almost anything (but the name 'Iron Man' or 'Tony Stark', since he doesn't own the IP), and America will listen. Whatever the case, I'm just hoping the next spot doesn't include any whales leaping out of gym floors. By admin | October 21, 2026 | News | Comments Off

Snap hires iron man star Robert Downey Jr. for Specs AR glasses.

Snap hires iron man star Robert Downey Jr. for Specs AR glasses. Oct 20, 2026 Snap hired actor Robert Downey Jr. as Chief Customer Experience Officer to promote its $2,195 standalone Specs AR glasses. The campaign features hands-on video demos and TV ad spots, highlighting dual-lens spatial displays and hand-tracking controls ahead of fall shipments. Snap is bringing a familiar Hollywood face to its latest hardware push by partnering with actor Robert Downey Jr. The Marvel star has officially signed on as the honorary Chief Customer Experience Officer for Specs, Snap's new standalone augmented reality glasses that project digital graphics directly into your real-world field of view. Hands-on demos and video series. To launch the collaboration, Downey stars in a series of short video clips published across YouTube and the official Specs site. The hands-on episodes show him testing out the see-through glasses across a variety of everyday activities. The list includes aiming golf putts, following interactive painting tutorials, and streaming video content while resting in bed. In one of the promotional clips, he also dumps a box labeled "AI glasses" into a trash bin, taking a lighthearted jab at basic audio glasses on the market. Snap is taking the promotional push beyond online channels with a major television advertising rollout. Commercial spots featuring Downey are scheduled to debut during high-profile sports broadcasts, starting with the NBA tip-off matchup between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers, followed by an ad placement during Game 1 of the MLB World Series. Standalone hardware features and pricing. Unlike basic smart frames that only play audio, Specs functions as a complete standalone augmented reality system. The device features built-in micro-displays inside both lenses along with full hand-tracking support. That hardware combination allows users to navigate menus and manipulate virtual screens using natural hand gestures or voice commands without needing to tether the device to a smartphone or computer. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel noted that working alongside Downey helps turn long-held concepts of wearable computing into practical consumer products. Preorders for the hardware are open now on Snap's website, starting at $2,195 for the Wi-Fi version and $2,395 for a model equipped with Verizon 5G connectivity, with shipments set to begin later this fall. Media partnerships in the spatial tech space. Alongside the celebrity endorsement campaign, Snap is expanding its software ecosystem through partnerships with major media brands like HBO and the NBA to build custom AR Lenses. While a $2,200 entry price limits the glasses to early adopters and creators, Snap is betting that true dual-lens displays offer far more real utility than basic smart glasses.
