About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field is required.
  • At least five years of experience in avionics, instrumentation (including bridge pressure transducers, resistance temperature detectors, and accelerometers), and electro-optical or imaging systems engineering is required.
  • Demonstrated experience owning a subsystem or hardware element across the full lifecycle, including requirements, design, integration, and verification and validation, is required.
  • Working knowledge of networking equipment and common data/interface standards, such as low-voltage differential signaling, SpaceWire, GigE Vision, Camera Link, CSI-2, and Ethernet, is required.
  • Experience collaborating with component teams to define and document electrical and mechanical interfaces is required.
  • Ability to review embedded hardware requirements and printed circuit board schematics is required.
  • Experience developing and executing test campaigns, including C++ and Python scripting for development flight instrumentation integration testing, is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot testing issues, isolate failures and root causes, and provide corrective action is required.
  • Familiarity with aerospace system design requirements such as thermal, vibration, shock, electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility, acoustics, and electrical grounding and bonding is required.
  • Direct experience working with suppliers and resolving problems is required.
  • A master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Direct experience with development flight instrumentation on launch vehicles, spacecraft, or landers is preferred.
  • Electro-optical or imaging systems design experience with space-hardened cameras is preferred.
  • Experience designing hardware for radiation environments, including total ionizing dose, single-event latchup, and single-event upset, and performing or supporting radiation testing is preferred.
  • Experience with lunar, cislunar, or deep-space mission environments and constraints is preferred.
  • Proficiency with analysis and scripting tools such as Python and MATLAB for data reduction and modeling is preferred.
  • Familiarity with flight safety and reliability requirements and processes is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical authority for development flight instrumentation, leading the subsystem lifecycle from concept, requirements definition, and architecture through design, analysis, integration, verification, and validation for lunar missions.
  • Architect and design development flight instrumentation solutions using custom and commercial off-the-shelf avionics hardware, including flight computing, signal conditioning, data acquisition systems, sensors, and harnessing.
  • Design, integrate, and test flight hardware assemblies to verify functionality and robustness against system requirements and mission targets.
  • Develop and maintain ground support equipment and test electronics, including hardware and software, for instrumentation development, integration, and test campaigns.
  • Maintain sensor lists and integration tracking documentation, ensuring accurate sensor allocations, locations, wiring and harness mapping, and status throughout vehicle integration.
  • Coordinate and support sensor installation and integration activities with technicians and product teams to ensure correct placement, calibration, and functional checkout.
  • Support product teams during test and flight operations, including real-time operation and monitoring of instrumentation systems, data management, and post-test data reduction for performance analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product teams to translate mission and vehicle requirements into instrumentation architectures that meet data collection, reliability, and schedule needs.
  • Conduct make-versus-buy trade studies and make technical decisions for instrumentation hardware and subsystems.
  • Manage the development flight instrumentation subsystem budget, schedule, and cost; coordinate team activities; procure hardware; and manage contractor and vendor relationships.
  • Prepare and deliver status reports and performance updates to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Author and maintain documentation of best practices, lessons learned, and design standards for development flight instrumentation to support continuous improvement across future missions.
  • Ensure development flight instrumentation designs comply with relevant flight safety, reliability, and environmental requirements for lunar mission applications.
  • Own the camera architecture across vehicle imaging needs, including engineering situational awareness, deployment and separation witness cameras, payload and customer-facing imagery, and public outreach and mission documentation.
  • Trade and select sensors, lenses, windows, filters, and image signal processors against mission requirements, and produce a documented link budget from photons on aperture to bits on the ground.
  • Drive resolution requirements from the required camera view through instantaneous field of view, modulation transfer function, focal length, sensor pitch, and integration time.
  • Define dynamic range strategy for the lunar lighting environment and evaluate high-dynamic-range sensors, dual- or multi-gain readouts, exposure bracketing, logarithmic or piecewise-linear encoding, and tone mapping.
  • Coordinate stray-light analysis for sunlight and Earth glare entering the optics.
  • Select and justify mounting locations based on field-of-view coverage, occlusion by vehicle structure, thermal soak, and stray-light paths, and work with vehicle systems teams to finalize camera integration.
  • Build and maintain the camera field-of-view and coverage model across mission phases, including cruise, lunar orbit, descent, touchdown, and surface operations.
  • Define imaging timelines, exposure plans, and onboard autoexposure logic against communications windows and downlink budgets, and work with operations to prioritize frames when bandwidth is limited.
  • Help define mechanical interfaces, including brackets, alignment tolerances, boresight calibration plans, contamination covers, sunshades, and articulated or deployable mounts.
  • Help define electrical and data interfaces, including connector pinouts, harness routing, power switching, synchronization and triggering, and data paths using CSI-2, GigE Vision, SpaceWire, Camera Link, or low-voltage differential signaling into command and data handling and the downlink chain.
  • Support development of photon budgets and frame-rate, resolution, bit-depth, and compression tradeoffs against onboard storage and direct-to-Earth or relay links.
  • Perform camera and development flight instrumentation verification and validation, including optical bench, thermal-vacuum, vibration and shock, electromagnetic interference and compatibility, radiation testing for total ionizing dose, single-event latchup and single-event upset, and end-to-end functional testing with flight avionics.

About the Company

Blue Origin

Builds rockets, engines and lunar spacecraft

Blue Origin builds rockets, engines and spacecraft for commercial satellite operators and government space programs. Its New Glenn orbital rocket uses a reusable first stage, while Blue Moon landers are designed to transport cargo and astronauts to the lunar surface. The company designs and manufactures liquid-fueled propulsion systems, and its New Shepard vehicle is built for short suborbital trips carrying people and research payloads. Customers pay for launch services and engines, and government development contracts fund work on systems for exploration beyond Earth orbit. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin is headquartered in Kent, Washington.
