Sarvam to build AI framework for India's armed forces.

Sarvam to build AI framework for India's armed forces. Indian AI company Sarvam has signed an agreement with Headquarters Integrated Defense Staff to develop AI applications for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The initiative will focus on operational support, training and decision-making using Indian technology and secure infrastructure. 27 Oct 2026 20:30 IST Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI tools for operational tasks, military training and decision support. The agreement covers projects across all three services, with HQ IDS coordinating the work. The framework will give the Army, Navy and Air Force access to shared AI models, systems that can perform tasks with limited assistance, and tools for analysing geographic data and visual information. The planned applications include decision support, target identification and combining information from multiple sensors. Human oversight will be maintained over operational decisions, according to the report. The initiative supports India's push to build defense technology domestically. Sarvam and HQ IDS intend to develop the AI systems using Indian technology, data and computing resources, with deployment on infrastructure under Indian control. Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of Sarvam, said: "Sarvam exists to build AI in India, for India. The core of that mission is to put the country's own intelligence into the systems it depends on. To work with the three services on the nation's defense is an honour and a privilege," The company will carry out the defense work through Chanakya, its dedicated division for national security and defense. The division will use Sarvam's AI technology stack, including its Sarvam 105B foundation model. The agreement also covers plans to develop an AI framework connecting different parts of India's defense capabilities. The projects will span the three services and organisations operating under HQ IDS. The initiative places AI development within India's broader effort to strengthen domestic defense capabilities. Its focus is on building systems that can support military operations while keeping the underlying technology and infrastructure within the country.

The agreement establishes an umbrella framework for AI projects spanning the three Services as well as joint, tri-service and integrated organisations under HQ IDS. Under the MoU, Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI solutions for operational, training and decision-support requirements, and provide ongoing technical support. Focus on Sovereign and Secure AI HQ IDS stated that the partnership will concentrate on building secure, sovereign and scalable AI capabilities, with strong emphasis on data sovereignty and responsible AI-based solutions. The framework will give the three Services and joint organisations access to common foundation models, agentic infrastructure, and geospatial and perception systems. This shared technology layer is intended to allow lessons and capabilities developed for one Service to inform projects in the others. Key application areas include decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop. Human oversight will be retained on operational decisions. The AI systems are to be built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure. Role of Chanakya Division The projects will be executed through Chanakya, Sarvam's firewalled division dedicated to national security and defence work. The division will utilise the company's AI stack, including foundation models such as Sarvam 105B. Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar noted that the partnership aligns with the company's mission of building AI in India for India. The MoU advances the Ministry of Defence's push to develop indigenous military AI capabilities in collaboration with Indian technology partners. By creating a common AI fabric across the Services, the initiative aims to improve interoperability, accelerate capability development and reduce dependence on foreign systems in critical defence applications. Financial details of the agreement and specific project timelines have not been disclosed. The partnership represents a significant step in integrating domestic AI expertise into the modernisation efforts of the Indian Armed Forces.

Sarvam AI's defense work signals a bigger shift in India's AI strategy.

Sarvam AI's defense work signals a bigger shift in India's AI strategy. Sarvam AI has signed an MoU with HQ IDS to develop AI tools for India's armed forces. The move shows India's growing focus on building its own AI systems for Defense. Published on: 27 Oct 2026, 3:15 am Updated on: 27 Oct 2026, 3:15 am India is planning to use its domestic AI systems in defense work. Reportedly, Sarvam AI has signed a memorandum of understanding, commonly known as an MoU, with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, or HQ IDS. It is a wing that works under the Ministry of Defence. The agreement will support AI projects for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, along with joint defense teams. According to the MoU, Sarvam AI will build and deploy AI tools for military training, operations and decision support. Further, the deal mentioned that the company will also maintain these tools after they are put to use. Regarding the partnership, Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of Sarvam, has revealed, "Sarvam exists to build AI in India, for India. The core of that mission is to put the country's own intelligence into the systems it depends on. To work with the three services on the nation's defense is an honour and a privilege." Reportedly, the work will be led by Chanakya, Sarvam's firewalled division focused on national security and defense. The main goal involves making AI models and tools that will study locations, images, and other information. How AI can help study reports, images and other data. Defense teams often deal with a massive amount of data, and that can be reports, data from sensors, or maps and photos. AI tools can sort these details, locate patterns and AI tools could sort these details, find patterns and point out anything that needs a closer look. This would help staff spend less time going through records by hand. Still, helping people study information is not the same as making decisions for them. AI can sum up findings and suggest possible options. Military staff must review the results and decide what action to take. Human oversight is especially important when decisions could affect lives or military operations. Sarvam AI's work with HQ IDS marks a step towards homegrown AI for India's armed forces. The real test will be whether these tools can provide useful, safe, and reliable support when put to use.

Defence Ministry arm, Sarvam sign pact for tri-service AI projects.

Defence Ministry arm, Sarvam sign pact for tri-service AI projects. Indian AI firm Sarvam signed an MoU with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff to develop AI applications for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The partnership focuses on operational support, training, decision-making, sovereign AI infrastructure and strengthening self-reliance in defence technology Published Date - 27 October 2026, 11:32 AM New Delhi: AI firm Sarvam on Tuesday said that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) - under the Defence Ministry - for AI projects across the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. The framework also extends to the joint, tri-service and integrated organisations under HQ IDS, it said. Under the pact, Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI applications for operational, training and decision-support requirements of the three services and provide follow-on technical support. However, work under the agreement spans several projects across all three services, with HQ IDS facilitating the engagement. The agreement is a step in the government's drive towards Atmanirbharta in defence and indigenisation of defence equipment and capability. That imperative now extends to artificial intelligence which is becoming as consequential to military capability as the platforms it runs on. Through the pact, the three services and joint organisations gain access to the same foundation models, agentic infrastructure and geospatial and perception systems. Doctrine and lessons learnt from one service's projects can then feed the next. In addition, the MoU advances the Ministry of Defence's direction on military AI with focus areas including decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop with human oversight retained on operational decisions, so that the AI layer is built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure. "Sarvam exists to build AI in India, for India. To work with the three Services on the nation's defence is an honour and a privilege. We are grateful to HQ IDS for its trust," said Pratyush Kumar, Co-founder, Sarvam. The work will be carried out by Chanakya - Sarvam's firewalled division focused on national security and defence - which will apply it's AI stack, including foundation models such as Sarvam 105B. * Follow Us:
