Requirements
  • Fellowship in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or an equivalent qualification as determined by the Department of Psychiatry.
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical direct and indirect care as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Provide clinical desk-side teaching and didactic education.
  • Perform clinical administration and participate in on-call service.
  • Supervise junior staff, including residents and clinical clerks.
  • Promote excellence in clinical academic services for patients within moderate-intensity psychiatric emergency services teams at the AJLB and DGH.
  • Provide oversight of residents on the teams and advise team managers and the Head of the Section of Acute Consultation and Emergency on strategic planning, quality assurance and improvement, and resource allocation.
  • Provide collegial co-leadership and role modeling to support optimal interprofessional functioning of acute services.
  • Provide coverage for vacation or unexpected psychiatrist absences when required.
  • Attend acute-services section meetings and Department of Psychiatry monthly and biannual meetings.
  • Support and guide residents and team members, including teaching on patient management and providing timely remote access when not physically on the unit.
  • Lead efforts to enhance collegiality among units and standardize clinical and educational activities across acute services.
  • Collaborate with clinical academic leaders, Department of Psychiatry sections and divisions, relevant leaders, and community partners to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Provide educational teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education levels.
  • Support research as needed and conduct research if desired.
Desired Qualifications
  • A sufficient track record in mental health research may qualify the candidate for protected research time, subject to agreement with the Department of Psychiatry’s research and executive leadership.
