About the company

Steinhafels sells furniture, mattresses and home decor to households through stores in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana and an online shop. Its catalog covers indoor and outdoor living spaces, with sofas, bedroom furniture and dining sets alongside rugs, lighting and accessories. Shoppers choose from brands such as Flexsteel, La-Z-Boy and Tempur-Pedic, compare styles in person, and purchase pieces for individual rooms or an entire home. The business earns revenue from merchandise sales and services, with customers choosing store pickup or delivery to their homes. Founded in 1934 in Milwaukee, Steinhafels is headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Waukesha assemblers have compressed schedules: Steinhafels lists four 10-hour days as an alternative to five eight-hour days.
  • Protection plans encourage return purchases: Steinhafels gives unused-plan customers a store coupon equal to the plan price.
  • Commercial sales reach beyond households: Steinhafels assigns business and nonprofit customers a dedicated account manager.

What critics are saying

  • Waukesha forklift work reaches 40 feet: Steinhafels requires comfort with heights and small spaces.
  • Compressed schedules still include weekends: Steinhafels' Waukesha assembler role requires one weekend day every week.
  • Custom-order timing depends on suppliers: Steinhafels warns made-to-order furniture has extended waits that vary by vendor.

What makes Steinhafels unique

  • Employees own the retailer: Steinhafels' stock is entirely held through its employee ownership plan.
  • Steinhafels makes mattresses itself: its New Berlin factory produces mattresses for commercial customers.
  • Design work starts without commitment: Decorating Solutions gives shoppers a free consultation with certified interior designers.
