The Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) at Thomas Jefferson University is seeking an accomplished physician-educator to serve as the Associate Dean for the SKMC Delaware Regional Medical Campus (RMC). Based on the University of Delaware campus in Newark, Delaware, the Associate Dean serves as the principal academic officer for SKMC’s educational programs at the regional campus. The Associate Dean is responsible for ensuring an exceptional educational experience for all learners while maintaining full compliance with accreditation standards and advancing the strategic growth and success of the Delaware Regional Medical Campus.

This position will oversee all 3 phases of the undergraduate medical education program at the RMC in coordination with other SKMC dean’s staff, departments and local clinical partners. This person is responsible for the successful launch, growth and long-term sustainability of the RMC. They will ensure equivalency of educational quality, student experience and outcomes across all 4 years of medical education at the RMC. The Associate Dean will ensure sufficient availability of scientific and clinical faculty to meet campus educational needs via ongoing recruitment efforts and ensure faculty associated with the RMC are onboarded and oriented to their teaching roles and responsibilities. Additionally, the Associate Dean will be responsible for oversight of the administrative staff, as well as student and faculty experience and support associated with the RMC.

The Associate Dean will collaborate closely with many administrative units within SKMC, including Office of Admissions, Office of Student Affairs and Career Counseling, Office of Assessment, Office of Faculty Affairs, Office of Financial Aid, Office of Diversity and Community Engagement, Office of Graduate Medical Education and Student Counseling Center to ensure the overall efficacy and coordination of the SKMC mission at the RMC. Given the campus’s location on the University of Delaware (UD) campus, the Associate Dean will serve as SKMC’s primary relationship steward with UD academic and administrative leadership, coordinating on shared space and day-to-day operational matters consistent with the terms of the UD-SKMC affiliation agreement. The RMC is established through a partnership with the State of Delaware, and the Associate Dean will engage with state agency stakeholders and contribute to program accountability and reporting activities consistent with that relationship.

About the Delaware Regional Medical Campus:

Delaware is one of only three states in the country without an in-state three- or four-year medical school and has long relied on partnerships and out-of-state institutions to train its physicians. The result is a persistent workforce gap, too few clinicians choosing to practice in Delaware after training, and rural communities in Kent and Sussex counties that remain chronically underserved.

To change this, the State of Delaware has selected Thomas Jefferson University to open a regional campus of Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Delaware. Purpose-built to address Delaware's physician workforce needs, the campus features an integrated curriculum that emphasizes rural health, primary care, and care for underserved populations. Clinical training will be embedded across Delaware's health system, placing students in the communities that need physicians most. A graduate medical education strategy is designed to ensure those physicians stay in Delaware after training. The launch of this regional medical campus will be supported by Delaware’s Rural Health Transformation funds.

The inaugural class of approximately 40 students will matriculate in Fall 2028, housed on the University of Delaware campus in Newark and supported by a statewide consortium of academic and clinical partners.

Job Summary:

• Provides collaborative support and service to the dean’s staff, faculty, administrative staff and students
• Provides educational leadership and academic expertise, with focus on the implementation and evaluation of the SKMC curriculum
• Provides oversight, support and guidance to student promotion and professionalism efforts

The position is a 12-month position. Candidates are expected to meet academic qualifications for the academic rank of Associate or Full Professor. The Associate Dean position is within the SKMC Office of Academic Affairs and reports to the Vice Dean for AA/UME. Percent effort and compensation will be determined based on the qualifications of the candidate.

Duties:

Curriculum

• Ensure optimal delivery of the SKMC curriculum including oversight of operational processes
• Regional campus representative to the SKMC Curriculum Committee
• Assist in creation and maintenance of RMC education budget
• Assist in data collection for all comparability reports and interpretation insights
• Assist in data collection and preparation of LCME Annual Report
• Assist in data collection in annual internal Independent Student Analysis surveys
• Key participant in the LCME Self-Study and Site Visit Processes

Student Support

• Assure well-planned, coordinated, and organized Phase 2 and Phase 3 rotation experiences that enable students to meet program requirements and support appropriate exposure to individualized interest in specialties.

• Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs and Career Counseling to support students in meeting programmatic requirements, including testing needs.
• Partner with the Office of Student Affairs and Career Counseling to support career advising through scheduling consideration, preparation of MSPEs, and directly supporting residency match efforts.
• Build and facilitate a sense of community and connection among students at the regional campus.
• Receive and address student concerns and questions regarding assigned clinical preceptors.

Clinical Partners

• Lead and execute the ongoing process of clinical preceptor recruitment and onboarding.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to clinical preceptors and residents within region to align with curriculum and teaching standards, as well completion of college and accreditation requirements.
• Oversee regular visits to clinical sites to evaluate facilities, monitor the clinical learning environment, and ensure compliance with accreditation and educational standards.
• Meet regularly to check in with needs, concerns, or worries regarding clinical affiliate partnerships.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships with regional leaders.
• Partner with the Office of Faculty Affairs to ensure availability and accuracy of adequate faculty development resources for clinical preceptors.

College Leadership

• Act as leader of the regional site, serve as the face of college in region.
• Serve on committees, working groups and task forces as needed.
• Provide teaching, academic support, and course direction as needed.
• Directly manage regional campus staff and ensure sound execution of all administrative duties and responsibilities by the RMC team.
• Partner with leadership in the Office of Faculty Affairs to ensure proper appointment, ranking and promotion of faculty according to established departmental and college guidelines and policies.
• Partner with the Office of Institutional Advancement team on philanthropic priorities in the region.
• Engage in activities and event related to service to the college and/or university

Other College Priorities

• Partner with the Office of Graduate Medical Education to support region specific residency program development and operations as needed.
• Partner with all college departments in support and development of new region-specific education efforts tied to the mission and vision of the college.
• Partner with the Office of Research to further the scholarship and research activity that will make an impact in the local and regional community.

Required Qualifications

• Board-certified or eligible physician (MD, DO, MBBS or equivalent)
• At least 5 years of undergraduate medical education administrative leadership experience
• Substantive experience with LCME accreditation including participation in survey visits
• Current or previous appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience and qualifications determined to be equivalent.
• Record of accomplishments in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for associate professor or professor rank.
• Ability to be present at RMC and SKMC for in-person engagement and teaching
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering access and opportunity in the academic environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Clinical experience
• Demonstrated success in organizational change or new program building
• At least 5 years of precepting experience
• Delaware residency or willingness to relocate to the Delaware / greater Philadelphia region
