Meta's $10B+ Texas data center hits political resistance over grid, incentives

Meta Platforms' planned data centre in El Paso, Texas, is facing political resistance from both parties despite its more than $10 billion price tag. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is pushing for tougher restrictions, fewer incentives and tighter limits on rural development. The state has approved no additional grid hookups since an August audit. The project will require one gigawatt of computing capacity, with the first phase expected online in 2028. Construction could support over 4,000 jobs at peak, followed by approximately 300 permanent positions. The investment represents at least 7.3% of Meta's $137.5 billion annual capital-expenditure midpoint. Last quarter, the company spent $31.08 billion on capital expenditures whilst generating only $784 million in free cash flow.

Meta to release open weights Muse Spark model 'soon' as v1.3 goes live

Meta will release an open weights version of its AI model Muse Spark "soon", CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced. Muse Spark 1.3 is now available on Meta's API service and Muse Code CLI. The updated model features improved performance in long-duration tasks and better judgement about its capabilities. Meta says it now asks clarifying questions when prompts are ambiguous and seeks user assistance when stuck, reducing the tokens needed to complete tasks. According to independent benchmarking by Artificial Analysis, Muse Spark 1.3 delivers performance comparable to OpenAI's GPT 5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5. The model shows a four-point improvement in overall intelligence compared to version 1.2. Meta offers a contributor tier with discounted pricing starting at $0.002 per million cached input tokens.

Innovid expands NIVO with ads MCP server by Meta integration.

Innovid expands NIVO with ads MCP server by Meta integration. The ads MCP server by Meta provides secure access to campaign data, and NIVO adds advertising expertise and workflow intelligence to transform those signals into meaningful action. Innovid, the omnichannel advertising platform, has announced its integration with ads MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, bringing secure, conversational workflows to Meta advertisers through NIVO AI. As an ads MCP server partner, Innovid is helping shape how enterprise marketers adopt the next generation of agentic AI workflows. Across early enterprise testing, Innovid has used the integration to summarise campaign health, identify performance trends, surface optimisation opportunities, and pinpoint creative assets needing attention - all through natural-language conversations. The ads MCP server by Meta provides secure access to campaign data, and NIVO adds advertising expertise and workflow intelligence to transform those signals into meaningful action. For clients, that means the gap between "something's off" and "here's what to do about it" gets significantly shorter. The Innovid integration allows clients to access the latest AI capabilities available through platform APIs from a single connected conversational experience. Rather than forcing marketers to learn separate AI assistants and workflows for every platform, NIVO brings campaign intelligence into an experience that helps marketers analyse performance, surface opportunities, and take action. What this means for Innovid clients: * Ask questions naturally: Campaign performance can be explored through conversation instead of navigating multiple reports and dashboards. * Spot opportunities earlier: Performance trends and creative fatigue can be identified sooner, helping marketers uncover optimisation opportunities before performance suffers. * Move from insight to action: Recommendations are connected directly to advertising workflows, helping marketers act faster. * Work with confidence: Secure, authenticated access keeps AI grounded in trusted campaign data without compromising governance. Innovid has worked closely with the Meta product team throughout the ads MCP server beta program, providing feedback on workflow design, usability, and real-world advertising use cases. The collaboration helps validate how emerging open protocols like MCP can accelerate AI innovation while preserving the security, transparency, and governance enterprise advertisers require. "The promise of agentic AI isn't just generating recommendations, it's also enabling meaningful action across advertising workflows," said Grant Parker, President, Innovid. "Our early work with ads MCP server demonstrates how secure, authenticated access to advertising data allows AI agents to analyse performance, understand campaign context, surface opportunities, and help marketers move from insight to execution. As more platforms embrace open AI protocols, we're excited to bring those innovations together through NIVO in ways that make marketers faster, smarter, and more connected." Innovid will continue expanding its AI integrations as advertising platforms evolve their MCP initiatives, bringing new capabilities into NIVO and helping marketers benefit from connected, interoperable AI workflows across the ecosystem. U.S. urges hands-off approach to AI regulation at G20 tech meeting.

U.S. urges hands-off approach to AI regulation at G20 tech meeting. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg speaks via video conference to delegates at the G20 Innovation Ministerial summit, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Tuesday. SHARE/SAVE Sep 2, 2026 CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - The U.S. pressed G20 members on Tuesday to take a hands-off approach to artificial intelligence regulation and avoid creating rules for the technology, at a gathering of industry titans and commerce ministers in North Carolina. The U.S. goals largely align with the thinking of the world's biggest AI companies, nearly all of which are American. They want less regulation around the world for their rapidly growing businesses, or to shape the rules as they are written. Federal government requirements could hurt the industry's profits if they slow the release of new models or prompt the companies to change how their products perform to address security concerns. U.S. tech adviser Michael Kratsios, who is co-hosting the two-day meeting, advocated for countries to adopt the "Carolina Principles." Countries that signed on agreed to avoid writing entirely new regulations for AI, and instead focus on writing rules for "novel" situations involving the technology, he told the G20 officials in a speech on Tuesday morning. The Chinese government signed the principles, he told reporters on Tuesday afternoon. He did not provide a copy of the document. The Chinese embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "Policymakers do not need to approach each innovation in isolation and should not treat every emerging technology as a first-of-its-kind policy problem," Kratsios said in his morning speech to the delegates. China's Technology and Science Minister Yin Hejun represented the Chinese Communist Party at the gathering. Kratsios told reporters he had a "great" bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart. Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk addressed the gathering by video on Tuesday. Hassabis called on the G20 officials to set up safety tests for AI systems. Zuckerberg said countries should not restrict open-weight AI models. Open-weight AI models are systems with publicly accessible core elements. Zuckerberg has tried in recent weeks to position his company as a leader in open-weight models, and restrictions could dampen his ambitions. Musk criticized the European Union's tech regulations, saying that the EU's policy "inhibits progress" for companies. He also urged leaders outside China to develop new energy sources to power data centers. Debates over data centers have become a key political issue in the U.S. ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with development influencing voter attitudes toward candidates. A United Nations panel recently warned that AI's developments are outpacing scientific understanding and government policy. Recent events, including a hack triggered by a rogue OpenAI agent that compromised the infrastructure of AI company Hugging Face, added to concerns about how closely leading AI companies are monitoring tests of their products. AI agents are programs that run with minimal human supervision. The G20 leaders are convening at a key moment in the AI sector's development and the global debate over how to govern it, and as the U.S. faces an increasing threat from China for AI supremacy. Chinese open-weight AI models are becoming increasingly capable when compared to proprietary systems from American AI giants such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Chinese-made open-weight models are gaining ground with U.S. companies, also posing a potential security risk if the country's leaders decide to interfere. "It has increased urgency for this administration to make sure that the rest of the world stays within the American tech ecosystem and doesn't seek alternatives," said Vivek Chilukuri, a technology and national security fellow at the Center for a New American Security. The meeting is one of a series of gatherings taking place over the next few months in U.S. cities leading up to the G20 leaders' summit in Miami in December. It was previously reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will separately appear before the delegates with Howard Lutnick, the U.S. commerce secretary, on Wednesday. A handful of protesters gathered outside the G20 meeting. John Montavon, a protester from North Carolina, disagreed with Musk's advocacy for data centers, adding that their power needs would make the planet warmer. "Mr. Musk has shown he is completely disassociated from the reality that most of us live in," he said.
