Pacific Gas and Electric Company and GM Energy have launched the Smart Charge Bundle, a first-of-its-kind offering for electric vehicle owners in Northern and Central California. The bundle provides customers purchasing or leasing new Chevrolet, GMC, or Cadillac EVs at participating dealerships with a home charger at no additional cost, valued at up to $1,999. Customers enrolled in PG&E's EV Charge Manager programme receive a $15 monthly bill credit and can potentially save up to an additional $50 per month by charging during off-peak periods. The programme uses WeaveGrid software to automatically schedule charging when electricity costs and demand are lower whilst ensuring vehicles are ready when needed. The bundle includes options for GM Energy's PowerUp 2 or PowerShift chargers, with the latter supporting bidirectional charging for backup power during outages.
MP Materials is advancing America's domestic rare earth supply chain, nearing full production of neodymium-praseodymium oxide at its California facility. The company produces about 1,000 metric tons of NdPr oxide per quarter and aims to reach full capacity. MP has already delivered magnets to General Motors for qualification testing, with commercial shipments planned for Q4 2026. The companies signed a supply arrangement in April 2022, and magnetic precursor deliveries began in March 2025. Second-quarter results showed NdPr sales volumes exceeding 1,000 tons for the second consecutive quarter, up 127% year-over-year. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $28.5 million from a $12.5 million loss in the same quarter last year. CFO Ryan Corbett noted that Australia's Lynas Rare Earths, a comparable operation, took nearly seven years to reach full run-rate production.

General Motors is about to reveal a new 8.3-liter turbodiesel V8 engine called Mongoose, and the name and accompanying teaser video both take cheeky jabs at the cross-town competition, specifically Ford. As the size and fuel of the engine indicate, the new Duramax motor is destined for heavy-duty pickups, specifically the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD. Therefore, its direct rival would be the Blue Oval's 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, internally named "Scorpion." What's good at killing scorpions? You guessed it - a mongoose. GM's mongoose wants to dominate scorpions. The video clip, embedded at the bottom of this article, starts in the desert by showing a scorpion walking in an oval shape, so right out of the gate, GM is taking shots at Ford. The voiceover talks up the attributes of the scorpion, saying it's "armored, dangerous, difficult to challenge. But nature always engineers a better predator." Is that last word another jab at Ford's engine naming conventions? Perhaps. As the voiceover says this, some thorny branches cast a shadow in the shape of the GMC wordmark. This is when we see the mongoose for the first time, and as the pupils of its eyes change into Chevy bowties, the voiceover calls it "bigger, stronger, more powerful" than the scorpion. And just before the mammal kills the arachnid, the clip freezes in what Incite D assume may become a fender badge logo (see below). As the "8.3L DURAMAX" badge appears from beneath the swept sand, the engine is said to be "built to dominate," so let's see what its targets will be. GM didn't mention any specifications pertaining to horsepower, torque, or towing capacity, but the engine is obviously bigger than the 6.7-liter Ford unit. The teaser also says it'll be stronger and more powerful, so Incite D can expect more than Ford's figures of 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. As a result, GM's current Duramax 6.6-liter V8, which makes 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, will go away. Autoblog's take. America loves big engines, whether for sports cars or the heavy-duty trucks that pull loads in the tens of thousands of pounds. It's why the Ram Power Wagon is finally available with a diesel for 2027, specifically the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo. However, with diesel prices now averaging above $6 per gallon across the nation (and as high as $8 per gallon in California), one can't help but wonder if there should be other options.
