East of Lexington: where the Upper East Side is actually eating this August. August 13, 2026 Ask someone who has never lived here to picture Upper East Side dining and they will describe Madison Avenue: white tablecloths, a maître d' who remembers your name, the kind of restaurant you dress for. That image is not wrong, exactly. It is just increasingly beside the point. The restaurants that have actually opened this year, the ones filling reservation books on a Tuesday in Lenox Hill and Yorkville, sit one and two avenues east of that image, on blocks Madison Avenue regulars rarely walk. Seven of the season's most talked-about openings sit east of Lexington Avenue, clustered along First and Third between roughly 68th and 92nd Streets. That is not a coincidence of timing. It is a pattern, and it tells you something about who these operators think is actually spending money in this neighborhood. The corridor, block by block. If you have noticed scaffolding and liquor license notices taped to windows you have walked past for years, here is what has been landing behind them: * Wainwright's Tavern, 1278 Third Avenue at East 73rd Street, took over the former Seamore's space. Jay Wainwright, who was part of that ownership group, kept the footprint largely intact: 45 tables seating 122 guests plus a 13-seat bar. * Sushi Counter, 1310 First Avenue between 70th and 71st, is the fourth location of a small chain running a gluten-free, Australian-style hand roll format. Better suited to a takeout stop than a destination dinner. * Crêpes Choupette, 1590 First Avenue, is a window operation parked just outside AOC East. * Zurutto Ramen, 244 East 79th Street between Second and Third, moved into the old Sojourn space with a service bar and a separate omakase sushi bar spread across roughly 3,200 square feet on two floors, run by Chef Lily Chen. * La Colina, 1431 First Avenue between 74th and 75th, replaced Gnocchi House Bar with a quiet Italian room of 23 tables and 62 chairs. * Sushi Genkai, 445 East 78th between First and York, is a compact counter concept from the same owner behind Sushi Seki on First Avenue. * Zaxbys, 1267 First Avenue near 68th, will be the Georgia-based chicken chain's first Manhattan location, taking over the former Le Gourmet space with about 2,800 square feet and 16 dine-in seats. Every one of those seven sits east of Lexington. Meanwhile Madison Avenue's most notable entry this year, Dear Margo at 961 Lexington from restaurateur Dean Pashalis, is technically a block off Madison too. The corridor doing the heavy lifting in 2026 is First and Third, not the avenue tourists photograph. Much of this surfaced first at Community Board 8's Street Life Committee, the public meeting where liquor license applications get their first airing before the New York State Liquor Authority makes anything final. If you want to know what is coming to your block before it has a sign in the window, that meeting record is the closest thing to an early warning system the neighborhood has. Why the same names keep showing up. The more interesting detail is not the addresses. It is who is behind them. Adrian Kercuku has run da Adriano at 1198 First Avenue since 2023 and is now opening La Colina fifteen blocks north. Julian Medina, who already owns Soledad, is opening a second restaurant, a Spanish tapas room called Caffetteria, at 1827 Second Avenue between 94th and 95th Streets, literally next door. Operators who already have a working restaurant here are not chasing a new neighborhood. They are doubling down on the one they know. That distinction matters because First and Third Avenue in the 70s and 80s is not a tourist corridor the way Fifth Avenue or the museum blocks are. Nobody stumbles onto East 78th Street between First and York on their way somewhere else. A restaurant on that block survives on the people who live within a five or six block radius and show up regularly, not on foot traffic. When an operator with an existing, successful restaurant chooses to open a second one nearby, they are making a bet on the resident spending base, not on visibility. What closed to make room. New restaurants rarely arrive on empty blocks. Some of this year's openings are also the second act of a closure worth naming. Doria, a Northern Italian room from a team with roots at SA Hospitality Group, is taking over the space at 1716 Second Avenue between 89th and 90th Streets that belonged to San Matteo for years. The old sign came down and a new one with real pedigree behind it is going up in the same room. Other closures have been less clean. Bayon, a Michelin Guide-listed Cambodian restaurant in Lenox Hill, closed permanently less than three years after opening. Sushi Ren shut down without much warning. Le Petit Parisien has been preparing to close its doors after a long run. Not every storefront turnover is a downgrade. Daily Sprouts, the five-month-old cafe at 163 East 92nd Street between Third and Lexington, is expanding rather than closing, adding dinner service with biodynamic wines and kombucha-based ciders alongside trivia nights and poetry readings from owner Svetlana Martynova. Restaurant Week, with less than a week left. If you want to test any of this without committing to a full evening's spend, the timing works in your favor for exactly six more days. NYC Restaurant Week's summer edition runs July 20 through August 16, 2026, with 34 Upper East Side restaurants offering two-course lunches and three-course dinners at fixed $30, $45, and $60 tiers. Saturdays are excluded and Sunday participation is optional restaurant by restaurant. The Michelin Guide's own roundup of this year's participants includes Tha Phraya, a Thai restaurant on the Upper East Side known for dishes that go well beyond the green curry and pad thai most people expect. What is easy to miss in the headline number is the trend underneath it. Three consecutive increases, arriving in the same year as the First and Third corridor buildout, is a restaurant scene with enough new and confident operators to keep opting in. On the calendar past August. Two things worth marking down have nothing to do with dinner reservations. The Neue Galerie at 1048 Fifth Avenue closed for construction on May 27, 2026, and is set to reopen this autumn with a 25th Anniversary Exhibition that keeps Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, the painting known as the Woman in Gold, at the center of the collection. The museum also announced plans in May to merge with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2028, though the building and its programming stay put for now. And on a far less romantic note, Home Depot's new four-floor, 120,000-square-foot store is opening at 410 East 61st Street with its main entrance on First Avenue, on the southern edge of the neighborhood. Not every sign of confidence in a neighborhood's spending arrives on a plate. What it adds up to. None of this is a single story about one great restaurant. It is a pattern: experienced operators repeating themselves a few blocks over, a corridor east of Lexington absorbing more new full-service concepts than Madison Avenue has all year, and a Restaurant Week roster that has grown every cycle since last winter. Taken together, it reads less like a trend piece and more like a running tally of who believes there is a paying audience on these specific blocks, night after night, without a tourist in sight. If you already live here, that is worth knowing the next time a storefront on your corner goes dark. It is probably not staying dark for long, and whatever replaces it is likely being opened by someone who has already bet on this neighborhood once before. From a brand-new spot to grab your favorite chicken to a major new concert venue getting ready for its debut, here are a few local updates you should know about: First up, Zaxby's has officially opened a new location on Jacksonville's Northside near Dunn Avenue and I-95. The restaurant is part of the city's Jacksonville Jumpstart to Prosperity Initiative, which focuses on creating jobs, supporting local entrepreneurs, and boosting economic growth in the area. On the flip side, Four Score Golf Tavern has closed its San Marco location. If you're a fan, don't worry - the Gate Parkway location is still open and serving customers. Looking ahead to the fall, the Jacksonville Fair is returning November 5-15 at its new Westside location instead of downtown. The fairgrounds continue to expand, with Duval Hall already hosting conventions and special events. Zaxby's coming to Wicomico County. * colby moore * aug 5, 2026 updated 22 hrs ago. WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - County officials say the Zaxby's restaurant chain will establish a location near Fruitland. The county says the restaurant will be located along Route 13, just before entering the municipal limits of the City of Fruitland. The restaurant chain is known for its hand-breaded chicken fingers, chicken sandwiches and dipping sauces. The restaurant's construction timeline and opening date has not been announced yet. "This is another great win for Wicomico County and our residents," said County Executive Julie Giordano. "The addition of Zaxby's demonstrates that national brands recognize the strength of our local economy and the tremendous growth opportunities available here. Every new business investment creates jobs, expands consumer choice, and strengthens our tax base. We are excited to welcome Zaxby's to Wicomico County." Zaxby's recently established a location in Cambridge, MD.
