About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of research and development experience in autonomous-driving or advanced driver-assistance motion-control algorithms.
  • A master's degree or above in vehicle engineering, automation, control theory, or a related major.
  • Knowledge of PID, LQR, and MPC control algorithms, with real-vehicle debugging experience in lateral and longitudinal control, state estimation, and fault diagnosis.
  • Familiarity with the dynamics of heavy vehicles such as mining trucks and articulated vehicles, and understanding of steering and braking system operating limits.
  • Experience developing adaptive compensation algorithms based on steering and braking characteristics; experience developing controls for slippery roads and uphill or downhill conditions is preferred.
  • Experience debugging and calibrating multiple vehicle models, and ability to independently analyze and solve complex control problems.
  • Proficiency in at least one of MATLAB/Simulink, C++, or Python, and ability to use AI tools to assist in programming and developing functional modules.
  • Familiarity with CAN communication protocols and chassis architecture; knowledge of functional safety and safety of the intended functionality is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, calibrate, and iteratively optimize lateral and longitudinal motion-control algorithms for autonomous vehicles to improve stability, smoothness, and response in heavy-load scenarios.
  • Study nonlinear dynamics across vehicle types, including unmanned mining trucks and articulated vehicles, and adapt control strategies to their characteristics.
  • Develop adaptive compensation algorithms based on steering and braking characteristics, addressing path tracking with high inertia, braking under full load, and vehicle-body attitude control across conditions including slippery roads and slopes.
  • Build vehicle-dynamics models; identify parameters; compensate for control errors and stability; and design robust safety strategies such as anti-saturation and rollover prevention for mining operations.
  • Engineer algorithms for vehicle implementation and conduct integrated real-vehicle testing with chassis actuators; manage parameters and diagnose faults using CAN communication; participate in establishing MIL/SIL/HIL simulation validation.
  • Use real-vehicle data to optimize tracking accuracy, braking response, and ride smoothness, and identify and resolve field control issues through a closed feedback loop.
  • Track advances in motion control, support implementation of new technologies, participate in system safety redundancy design, and improve reliability across vehicle models.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with perception, planning, and chassis teams; produce algorithm proposals, calibration specifications, and simulation and real-vehicle test documents.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with unmanned mining truck projects is preferred; strong commercial-vehicle or advanced driver-assistance experience is also suitable, and OEM project experience is an advantage.
  • Experience delivering unmanned mining truck or commercial-vehicle autonomous-driving projects at scale.
  • Experience developing coordinated steering and braking control or rollover-prevention robust control.
  • Experience using data-driven or mechanism-and-data fusion methods to address control consistency and stability across vehicle models and operating conditions.
  • Holding an autonomous-driving control-related invention patent or publishing high-quality academic papers in vehicle control, such as in VSD or TVT.

About the Company

Caterpillar

Makes heavy machinery, engines and gas turbines

Caterpillar makes construction and mining machines, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and locomotives for contractors, mines, energy companies and data center builders. It is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and its yellow Cat bulldozers and excavators work in nearly every country. Customers buy or rent machines through independent Cat dealers, while its engines and turbines generate electricity and push natural gas through pipelines. Caterpillar earns money from equipment sales and from the parts and repairs that dealers supply over a machine's working life. It was formed in 1925 when California's Holt and Best tractor companies merged, and it is based in Irving, Texas.
