About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of quantitative equity portfolio management with direct responsibility for decisions and outcomes, not only research or client coverage; long/short strategy experience is strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of equity portfolio management, including market and factor exposures, risk measurement, implementation effects on performance, portfolio optimization, performance attribution, margin requirements, and financing and short-borrowing economics.
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field and robust programming experience in Python and SQL for portfolio data analysis and collaboration with engineers.
  • Ability to experiment with AI tools, critically evaluate their outputs, translate investment reasoning into clear product requirements, and identify incomplete or incorrect answers.
  • Ability to earn sophisticated investors’ trust and explain complex portfolio decisions clearly, discuss uncertainty, and help customers understand their options.
  • Ability to notice and investigate issues, follow through, exercise independent judgment, and know when to involve another expert.
  • Hold, or be willing to obtain, the registrations required for the responsibilities.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee thousands of customized equity accounts; monitor performance against benchmarks, review risk exposures, and define automated checks for tracking error, cash balances, and factor exposures.
  • Bring insights from live portfolios to researchers; help refine portfolio construction, risk monitoring, risk and performance attribution, and support testing and rollout of new investment capabilities.
  • Help design alerts that surface unexpected portfolio behavior and focus human attention where judgment matters most.
  • Consider tax awareness throughout portfolio implementation, including US tax regulations relevant to long-only and long/short equity investing, and ensure compliance with internal and external rules and regulations.
  • Partner with product and engineering to translate quantitative expertise into automated portfolio analysis, personalized guidance, and real-world test cases for AI outputs.
  • Develop real-world test cases and evaluate AI-generated analysis and recommendations; identify missing context or flawed assumptions; work with compliance to establish appropriate boundaries and decide when a licensed professional should review a decision.
  • Explain portfolio performance to customers and help them evaluate complex investment decisions, including concentrated-stock transitions and tradeoffs between tax efficiency and tracking risk; turn recurring questions into product capabilities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Quantitative equity research experience is a significant plus.
  • Understanding of tax-aware investing, including tax-loss harvesting, wash-sale constraints, and transitions of appreciated portfolios; ability to evaluate tax benefits alongside investment risk and costs.
  • CFA designation is preferred but not required.

About the company

Frec offers a direct indexing platform that lets self-directed investors own the individual stocks in an index (like the S&P 500) instead of buying an ETF, enabling stock-level tax-loss harvesting. Its core service charges an annual advisory fee starting at 0.09% with a $20,000 minimum and is delivered through a self‑service, mobile app–driven platform. The company operates via two SEC-registered entities: an investment adviser and a FINRA-member broker-dealer, and it also provides zero-commission trading for stocks and ETFs. Additional features include a high-yield Frec Treasury option for cash, a portfolio line of credit secured by stock holdings, and partnerships such as with AngelList to offer money market funds, all aimed at making advanced investing strategies more accessible.
