Alexander Dennis studies 18-metre Enviro Max tram-style electric bus with Volvo for UK BRT market.

Alexander Dennis studies 18-metre Enviro Max tram-style electric bus with Volvo for UK BRT market. Alexander Dennis and Volvo Buses have announced a feasibility study for the development of an 18-metre tram-style electric articulated bus for the UK market, combining Volvo's BZL Electric chassis with a new Alexander Dennis body design named Enviro Max. The initiative, announced on 22 October 2026, targets high-capacity, zero-tailpipe-emission bus rapid transit (BRT) applications. According [...] 22 October 2026 By Editorial staff Alexander Dennis and Volvo Buses have announced a feasibility study for the development of an 18-metre tram-style electric articulated bus for the UK market, combining Volvo's BZL Electric chassis with a new Alexander Dennis body design named Enviro Max. The initiative, announced on 22 October 2026, targets high-capacity, zero-tailpipe-emission bus rapid transit (BRT) applications. According to Alexander Dennis, a subsidiary of NFI Group, the project will assess potential demand among UK local authorities and transport operators for an articulated electric vehicle designed to operate on existing road infrastructure, without requiring rails, track beds or overhead electrical lines. Volvo Buses has made its BZL Electric articulated chassis available to Alexander Dennis for the feasibility study. The proposed vehicle would combine Volvo's electric driveline and chassis technology with Alexander Dennis' body engineering and UK manufacturing capabilities. The two manufacturers have previously collaborated on the Enviro400XLB high-capacity double-decker, developed using the Volvo B8L chassis. The Volvo BZL Electric chassis platform was originally launched in September 2021, targeting markets including the UK, Australia and Mexico, with single- and double-deck configurations and compatibility with CCS and OppCharge charging systems. More recently, in June 2026, Volvo Buses introduced the 18-metre BZL Electric Articulated in Australia, featuring a locally manufactured Volgren body. Alexander Dennis Enviro Max: headed to BRT. The proposed Enviro Max will be based on the articulated version of the Volvo BZL Electric platform, which, as mentioned above, was introduced in Australia earlier in 2026. The chassis is an articulated development of Volvo's existing BZL Electric rigid platform. The configuration under evaluation supports a complete vehicle length of approximately 18 metres, with a permitted gross vehicle weight of 30,000 kg. Within this project,Alexander Dennis will develop a new body design for the vehicle, extending the construction principles already adopted across its Enviro family to an articulated rapid transit application. According to the manufacturer, the Enviro Max body will incorporate maintenance access arrangements and parts commonality with existing Enviro products. The vehicle's interior configuration remains under evaluation, with Alexander Dennis and Volvo Buses planning to engage with operators, local authorities and other stakeholders to determine passenger layouts, accessibility provisions and compatibility with existing infrastructure. The project also involves technical expertise from New Flyer, another NFI Group company, which has experience in the development and manufacturing of articulated buses. Neither manufacturer has announced a production schedule, vehicle price, passenger capacity or confirmed customer orders for the proposed Enviro Max. Volvo BZL Electric: up to 530 kWh and 450 kW pantograph charging. The Volvo BZL Electric articulated chassis is equipped with Volvo's EPT802 dual-motor electric driveline, delivering a maximum combined output of 400 kW and 850 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted through a two-speed automated manual transmission. The platform can accommodate up to 12 lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery packs, corresponding to a maximum installed energy capacity of 530 kWh. Two charging interfaces are available. The chassis supports CCS2 plug-in charging at up to 250 kW and OppCharge pantograph charging at up to 450 kW. These specifications refer to the Volvo articulated chassis made available for the study. Final battery configuration, vehicle weight, passenger accommodation and charging arrangements for a potential production version of the Enviro Max have not yet been announced. The manufacturers identify urban and interurban high-capacity services as potential applications for the proposed vehicle, including bus rapid transit corridors. In brief. * What is the Alexander Dennis Enviro Max? A proposed 18-metre tram-style electric articulated bus for UK rapid transit applications. * Which electric chassis will it use? Volvo's BZL Electric articulated chassis, with an EPT802 dual-motor driveline delivering up to 400 kW. * What battery and charging capacities are available? Up to 530 kWh of installed battery capacity, with CCS2 charging at 250 kW or OppCharge at 450 kW. * When will the Enviro Max enter production? No production timetable has been announced. The project is currently undergoing a feasibility study. Alexander Dennis and Volvo Buses on the Enviro Max project. Paul Davies, President & Managing Director at Alexander Dennis, said: "This feasibility work gives us an opportunity to consider how our experience in designing and building buses could be combined with Volvo Buses' electric chassis technology. As part of this, we will be able to draw on the extensive experience that our NFI Group sister company New Flyer has with articulated buses. Our new Enviro Max would offer combined and local authorities a stunning zero-tailpipe-emission rapid transit solution that supports British manufacturing and benefits the wider economy by keeping investment in the country. We believe there is a role for bus rapid transit schemes alongside our conventional Enviro-family single and double-deck buses, and we look forward to engaging with customers and stakeholders to understand their requirements." Richard Mann, Sales Director at Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, said: "We are seeing increasing interest from local authorities in tram-style electric bus systems that can deliver the visibility, capacity and passenger appeal associated with tram-style systems, while offering a more flexible and lower-infrastructure route to delivery. Following the successful introduction of the Volvo BZL Electric articulated chassis in Australia earlier this year, we are now exploring with Alexander Dennis how this proven electric platform could support a tram-inspired product tailored to the UK market."

The programme, announced by Alexander Dennis in mid-August, has received UK Government grant funding and will be led by the Greater Cambridge Partnership. It builds on the existing Connector project, which has already introduced three Alexander Dennis Enviro100AEV autonomous buses on a route serving the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The new phase will involve the technical upgrade of an existing Enviro100AEV and the introduction of a larger Enviro200AEV electric single-decker, both equipped for SAE Level 4 operation. The project will also investigate the deployment of autonomous buses on Cambridgeshire's planned busway network, including a trial on the southern section of the existing guided busway. According to Alexander Dennis, Commercialising Connector will examine the transition from autonomous bus trials to regular public transport operations, with activities covering passenger experience, ticketing, safety and accessibility. Alexander Dennis and Fusion Processing were also involved in Scotland's CAVForth autonomous bus project, which began carrying passengers in May 2023 with five Enviro200AV buses operated by Stagecoach on a 14-mile route between Fife and Edinburgh Park. The subsequent CAVForth2 programme included plans to extend the route towards Dunfermline and introduce an autonomous Enviro100AEV equipped with an upgraded Fusion Processing CAVStar system. However, the original CAVForth service was discontinued in February 2025, after Stagecoach reported passenger numbers below the levels required to continue operations beyond the project's scheduled end. Enviro100AEV and Enviro200AEV to receive Level 4 autonomous driving technology. Under the programme, Alexander Dennis and autonomous driving technology partner Fusion Processing will upgrade one of the three Enviro100AEV buses already deployed in Cambridge. The vehicle, owned by Mistral Group and operated by Whippet, will be fitted with dual-redundant actuator technology to achieve full SAE Level 4 capability. The project will also introduce an Enviro200AEV electric single-decker equipped to the same technical standard. SAE Level 4 refers to automated driving systems capable of performing the complete driving task without human intervention within defined operational conditions. The upgraded vehicles will be used to demonstrate no-user-in-charge operation, in which no person is required to be responsible for driving the vehicle while the automated system operates within its specified conditions. The existing Connector programme has already placed three Enviro100AEV buses into service on a route serving the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The new grant funding will support the extension of current services and further testing of autonomous driving technology in public transport applications. The programme will collect evidence on customer experience, ticketing arrangements and the requirements for safe and accessible operation. Alexander Dennis states that the activities will address the practical arrangements needed to introduce self-driving buses beyond trial projects. £3.88 million UK Government funding. Commercialising Connector has been awarded £3.88 million in grant funding under the UK Government's £150 million CAM Pathfinder programme, delivered in partnership with Zenzic and Innovate UK. The project consortium is led by the Greater Cambridge Partnership and comprises Alexander Dennis, Fusion Processing, Anthrometric, Whippet and Ticketer. Alongside the vehicle upgrades, Commercialising Connector will examine the use of autonomous buses on Cambridgeshire's planned busways. A trial is scheduled to take place on the southern section of the existing guided busway, extending the scope of the programme beyond the Cambridge Biomedical Campus route. The project will also address operational aspects of automated bus services, including passenger interaction, ticketing and accessibility requirements. Alexander Dennis expands UK orders with new deliveries to operators.

Alexander Dennis expands UK orders with new deliveries to operators. Bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis has announced a series of fleet developments across the UK, including the delivery of a new double-decker to Roberts Travel Group and fresh vehicle orders from operators Lothian Buses and Compass Travel. The latest delivery to Roberts Travel Group, an independent operator based in England, is a high-specification Enviro400 double-decker designed to help the company meet full Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (PSVAR) requirements. The vehicle is equipped with real-time passenger information systems, three Mobitec scrolling display screens and an Ardent ClearConnect induction loop to support passengers with hearing impairments. Measuring 11.5 metres in length, the bus features 85 Lazzerini Pratico seats, all fitted with three-point seatbelts. It is finished in Roberts Travel's charcoal-and-silver livery and includes alloy wheels as part of its exterior design. The addition brings the operator's fleet of Enviro400 vehicles to four, with the previous three acquired since 2017. Like its predecessors, the new bus is expected to be deployed across a range of services, including private hire, rail replacement and school transport. In a separate development, Lothian Buses has placed a major order for 60 new double-deck vehicles. The buses will be built on Volvo's B8L chassis and bodied with Alexander Dennis's Enviro400XLB design. These tri-axle vehicles will measure 12.8 metres in length, making them around 1.3 metres longer than most of Lothian's existing two-axle double-deck fleet. The order reflects the operator's aim to increase passenger capacity while maintaining low-emission performance, particularly on high-demand routes. Meanwhile, Alexander Dennis has also secured an agreement with Sussex-based Compass Travel (Sussex) Ltd to supply 14 new buses. The order includes 13 Enviro200 single-deck vehicles and one Enviro400 double-decker, and was finalised at the recent annual conference of the Association of Local Bus Managers (ALBUM). All vehicles for Compass Travel are scheduled for delivery before the end of 2026. They will join a fleet already dominated by Alexander Dennis models, which make up around 90% of its vehicles. The Enviro200, in particular, continues to form the backbone of Compass Travel's operations, with the latest additions expected to further strengthen its role in the fleet. The announcements highlight continued investment by UK operators in modernising fleets, improving accessibility, and expanding capacity to meet operational and regulatory demands.
