Citi's Jane Fraser: after 20,000 job cuts, the bank must "beat the best

Citigroup chief executive officer Jane Fraser says the bank's turnaround has entered a new phase after it posted its best third-quarter revenue in a decade. Speaking virtually at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit on Wednesday, she said, "We've got a lot of the heavy lifting behind us." "If we are going to be the best in the businesses we're in, we have to beat the best," she said. Since 2021, Fraser has cut Citi into five core businesses, removed layers of management, and begun exiting consumer banking in 14 markets outside the US. The overhaul includes 20,000 job cuts due to finish before 2027. Fraser said AI can help Citi earn money, save money, and secure the bank. Whether it will shrink headcount is unclear: "Honestly, we don't know yet." Citi now requires AI training for 175,000 employees.

Big banks' Q3 dealmaking fees hit $8.47B, up 15%, but deals "delayed rather than canceled

Four of Wall Street's biggest banks reported third quarter dealmaking fees of $8.47 billion, up 15% from a year earlier but down 7.5% from a banner second quarter. Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo said activity remains strong despite market volatility and higher borrowing costs. JPMorgan chief financial officer Jeremy Barnum said deals were "delayed rather than canceled" after a slowdown in late September, when volatility widened the gap between what buyers and sellers would accept. Goldman's fees rose 22% to $3.2 billion, led by record M&A advisory revenue. Wells Fargo's rose to $894 million, and Citigroup's rose 9% to $1.35 billion. Goldman chief executive officer David Solomon said some companies postponed initial public offerings (IPOs) in September rather than accept valuations 10% to 15% lower.

Citigroup posts best Q3 revenue in a decade, lifts ROTCE guidance above 11%

Citigroup reported its best third-quarter revenue in a decade for 2026, with four of its five core businesses growing. Services revenue rose 15%, and wealth management return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) topped 14%. The bank raised its full-year ROTCE guidance to above 11%, with a medium-term target of 11-13% for 2027-2028. It expects Markets revenue to fall about 20% in the fourth quarter, a typical seasonal decline. Expense growth was held to 3% excluding notable items. Citigroup booked over $1 billion in year-to-date severance and bought back $3 billion of shares in the third quarter alone. Its CET1 capital ratio stood at 12.8%. The deconsolidation of Banamex in early 2027 is expected to be slightly accretive to that ratio despite a $9 billion currency translation adjustment loss.
