CHS is a farmer-owned cooperative that markets grain and supplies fuel, fertilizer and crop protection products to farmers and rural communities. It is the largest farmer-owned cooperative in the United States. Its grain business stores, trades and exports crops and crushes oilseeds into meal and oil for food and feed buyers, while its energy business refines crude oil and sells fuels and lubricants under the Cenex brand through local cooperatives and retailers. Earnings flow back to member owners as patronage, allocated by how much business each does with the cooperative. CHS traces its roots to farmer cooperatives founded in the late 1920s and is headquartered in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota.
