About the company

eGenesis develops genetically engineered porcine (pig) kidneys and other organs that are compatible with human bodies, aiming to address the organ shortage by enabling transplantations into humans. Its product is created by editing pig genes to reduce rejection and improve compatibility, producing HuCo™ (Human Compatible) organs and cells that can be transplanted by healthcare providers. Unlike many biotech firms that focus on synthetic tissues or other approaches, eGenesis concentrates on xenotransplantation—using animal organs engineered to be accepted by the human immune system—for use in patients awaiting transplants. The company’s goal is to save lives and improve quality of life by expanding the supply of transplantable organs and reducing wait times for patients in need.

What believers are saying

  • Natco raised eGenesis funding to $24.7 million by October 31, 2026.
  • June 2026 hired Glenn Vraniak and Jennifer Bergheiser to finance commercialization.
  • Mass General Brigham collaboration produced record dialysis independence and first xenograft-to-allograft transitions.

What critics are saying

  • United Therapeutics' EXPAND and ThymoKidney trials threaten eGenesis' first-mover advantage.
  • The first EGEN-2784 kidney failed after nine months, exposing durability limits.
  • Clinical and commercial failure before 2027 funding exhaustion would crush eGenesis entirely.

What makes eGenesis unique

  • EGEN-2784 uses multiplex edits and PERV inactivation, not single-gene editing.
  • September 2026 data showed five patients, including two bridging to human kidneys.
  • FDA cleared RESTORE for 33 waitlisted patients, with Phase 1/2/3 starting Q1 2027.

Natco Pharma raises eGenesis investment to $16.7 million, backs gene-edited organ research.

Natco Pharma raises eGenesis investment to $16.7 million, backs gene-edited organ research. Natco Pharma has raised its investment in US biotech eGenesis to $16.7 million from $14 million, as it backs research aimed at using gene-edited pig organs for human transplants. By Megha Rani September 28, 2026, 4:33:27 PM IST (Updated) Natco Pharma has increased its proposed investment in US-based biotechnology company eGenesis Inc. to $16.7 million from the previously disclosed $14 million, the company said in an exchange filing on Monday, September 28. The investment will be made through Natco Pharma's wholly owned subsidiaries Natco Pharma (Canada) Inc. and Natco Pharma USA LLC through convertible promissory notes carrying an interest rate of 8% compounded annually. Natco Pharma (Canada) will invest $13.7 million, while Natco Pharma USA will invest another $3 million. The investment is expected to be completed by October 31, 2026. The latest investment is an update to Natco Pharma's disclosure on August 25. The company also said there has been a change in the subsidiaries participating in the investment. Following the proposed investment, Natco Pharma's total investment in eGenesis will rise to $24.7 million, including the $8 million it invested in the US biotech in 2024. What does eGenesis do? eGenesis is developing technology that could potentially help address the shortage of human organs available for transplantation. The company uses gene editing to modify pig organs so they can potentially be transplanted into humans while reducing the risk of rejection and viral transmission. eGenesis is currently developing programmes involving kidney transplantation, acute liver failure and heart transplantation. The company made headlines in March 2024 after conducting the world's first pig-kidney transplant in a living patient. The transplant was authorised by the US Food and Drug Administration under its Expanded Access pathway. Two additional patients subsequently received pig-kidney transplants, Natco Pharma said. eGenesis is currently a clinical-stage, pre-revenue company and is conducting clinical trials involving pig-kidney transplantation in humans and pig-liver perfusion. For Natco Pharma, the investment is aimed at backing new-age therapeutic programmes addressing critical unmet medical needs, according to the company's disclosure.

Genetically modified pig kidneys bridge two patients to human transplants for first time

Genetically modified pig kidneys have kept two kidney failure patients alive long enough to receive human organ transplants for the first time, according to biotech company EGenesis. Tim Andrews, a 66-year-old from New Hampshire, received a modified pig kidney in January 2025. The organ functioned for about nine months before failing, but kept him stable enough to survive until a human kidney became available. Andrews, who had been told he would likely die before receiving a transplant, felt immediate improvement after the pig kidney procedure. He could walk around freely without dialysis and regained his energy. EGenesis says a second patient also received a pig kidney that served as a successful bridge to a human transplant. The company hopes to make the organs widely available within approximately four years, pending further testing.
