Requirements
  • An MD degree and eligibility for licensure in Nova Scotia.
  • Three to five years of experience as a medical department member.
  • Experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner.
Responsibilities
  • Hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department, including conducting regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
  • Work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to maintain service continuity and meet patient-flow objectives, including oversight of vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
  • Serve as an active member of the Zone Medical Advisory Committee and advise it on quality of care, treatment, teaching, and research responsibilities.
  • Participate in developing, reporting on, and overseeing department objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and resource utilization.
  • Make recommendations regarding physician resource needs, including the number and type of physicians required, in consultation with relevant medical and operational leaders.
  • Organize and implement the department’s clinical and academic activities while ensuring alignment with organizational and system priorities.
  • Monitor department standards, quality, and resource utilization within the zone.
  • Co-lead development and implementation of a plan to improve access and patient flow, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
  • Attend Access and Flow Network Council meetings and contribute local context to the development of strategies, policies, and procedures that improve patient access and flow.
  • Maintain and enforce professional standards and implement quality assurance and improvement within the department.
  • Address and resolve medical staff issues, including respectful-workplace and interpersonal matters, and oversee complaint and discipline management where required.
  • Attend relevant committee meetings assigned by the Zone Medical Executive Director.
  • Provide co-leadership with the Zone administrative director for strategic and operational planning and budgeting.
  • Monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members and act on identified issues as required.
  • Review department members’ performance and provide performance management at least annually where required.
  • Coordinate medical students and residents in the zone, including supervising residents’ educational requirements where applicable.
  • Support the department’s research agenda.
  • Participate in clinical services planning for the zone and health authority.
  • Lead recruitment and retention for the department in collaboration with the Zone Medical Executive Director and Medical Site Leads, ensuring new-hire and onboarding processes are completed.
  • Participate in leadership development.
